We came a couple of months ago and had their loaded yucca fries with carne asada as well as some pupusas. The meat on our fries felt really low quality-- the best way I could describe it was it tasting like frozen hamburger meat-- and gave us indigestion for the rest of the night, which was really disappointing to experience. Today we unfortunately experienced some really rude service. My bf ordered a plain water and we were given a fresco ensalada (no big deal, he likes it) We don't eat pork and ordered fried yucca on its own, just yucca frita. We were given a plate of yucca con chicharron :( I told the service we just ordered yucca frita and we were told that we did not specify that for her. I explained that we don't eat pork so we sent it back and were met with a displeasing look. I said we didn't want to yucca anymore since we had a lot of food already and she said "the kitchen already made it." So I said it was fine but just the yucca this time and she came back with the same exact plate just without the chicharron-- no visible plate change. Needless to say for the price, decline in food quality, and rude service, it's not worth coming back. At least not for a while.

We started with the ensalada, which was refreshing and had just the right amount of sweetness. For pupusas, we ordered the revueltas, loroco con queso, and frijol con queso. We tried both corn and rice dough, and honestly, both were delicious. My personal favorite was the frijol con queso with the rice dough- so flavorful and perfectly cooked. The yuca frita was exactly how it should be: crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. The chicharrón was cooked perfectly as well, and the homemade green salsa that the sweet lady helping us made was the perfect addition. She was so kind, welcoming, and always had a friendly smile, which made the experience even better. Another thing that really stood out was how clean the restaurant is. It's spacious, with plenty of seating whether you're coming with a large group, your family, or just stopping by for a meal on your own. We absolutely loved this place and will definitely be back. Next time we're bringing my Salvadoran in-laws- I have a feeling this place will get their authenticity approval too! Spanish!

I said cash and was told my total would be around $29. When I arrived, I was told the total was $29.70. While waiting, I looked at the menu and noticed the pupusas were listed at $4.50 each. Six at $4.50 should be $27 before any applicable tax, so I was confused about the total. I also wasn't automatically given a receipt and had to specifically ask for one. Cashiers demeanor was very condescending. The receipt made things even more confusing. It shows an amount of $30.81 with a $1.11 "cash discount," making the total $29.70, but there is no itemized breakdown showing what I was actually charged for each pupusa or explaining the additional amount. I don't mind paying higher prices if they're clearly disclosed, but the pricing should be transparent and customers should receive an itemized receipt. The food is straight-up good, the kind that makes you pause mid-bite like, "Yeah... they understood the assignment." Service is good, friendly, and attentive without hovering like a probation officer. And the rarest treasure of all in L.A.: ample parking. That alone is basically a five-star amenity. Wham-bam thank-you ma'am. Now here's the official co-sign: this is my best friend Ronald's favorite restaurant. Ronald comes here all the time and he's not guessing--he's dialed in. His go-to are the pupusas de chicharrón, and at this point he's so consistent Ronald should have his own plaque on the wall. So do yourself a favor: pull up and ask for "the Ronald Pupusa de chicharrón with extra love." If they laugh, you're in the right place. If they don't laugh, order it anyway because the food will still do what it does. Quick reality check for outsiders rivals visitors: this is the hood. I'm from this hood, so it's normal to me--but if you're not from around here, don't slide down Vermont dressed like you're trying to get "checked" for fun. No loud sports jerseys, no sagging, no hat cocked sideways like you're rehearsing a persona. Be low-key, be respectful, move smart, and you'll be completely fine. Bottom line: Playa Dorada (10522 South Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90044) is worth the stop--great food, good service, parking that won't ruin your mood, and a real local vibe.
