Food and service was excellent. Portions and quality very good. Definitely worth a visit and we will be back!

You never know what youre gonna get here. As happily displaced Texans (go bills!), sometimes we feel like it's back home. Sometimes things are soggy or enchilada sauce is bitter. But when it's good, it's good. The new space seems to be working better foe their service. It's cute in there. Expect sweet, premixed margaritas, but ice cold bottles of beer, pacifico even! Hands down the worst Mexican food we've ever had or didn't have because after two bites I had to put my fork down. One to try and two was to make sure it really was that bad. I ordered a chicken chimichanga that was so dry on the inside (like hay) burnt on the outside and covered in some watery white cheese sauce. The rice and beans were too salty. Even the Salsa was thin and flavorless. It wouldn't even cling to the chip. At any rate to make a comparison Taco Bell is gourmet in comparison. Sorry El Azteca for the bad review but also sorry to me for wasting my $$$ read more

I've had chipotle and I've had Azteca.....all I have to say is when Chipotle comes in I have two words....suck it!!!! You cannot beat Azteca. Their chips aren't stale, their guacamole is authentic and tastes way better. I don't even know why they are building it. Azteca all the way!!!!! read more

The food was terrible at their previous location. They moved so we thought we would give it a try. It was awful. The quesadilla had burned black vegetables and tasted charred. It was so wet inside it was diggy and dripping grease. My husband ordered tacos. Plain ground beef no seasoning. No taco sauce, pico nothing..just lettuce and some shredded cheese. Worst Mexican food ever. The service was great, but doesn't help when food is that awful. read more

When my wife and I went to college at SUNY Fredonia (graduated in 2010), El Azteca was our favorite place in town to visit. Life took us away from Fredonia for most of our lives since, but we recently stopped in to eat inside for the first time in over a decade... A few things changed. The staff all seemed different, although we suspected one person is the daughter of a woman we used to see there all the time. There were a few changes to the menu, but not a ton. Some menu items stayed the same, but how they make it had some minor changes. Most of the experience was exactly as we remembered it. The relaxing low-lighting, cool "Aztec" decor, and Latin music. The exceptionally friendly service -- seriously, they're always so nice. And, of course, the delicious food. Our go-to menu item here has always been the Fajita Taco Salad, usually with steak (although my wife ordered chicken this most recent time). Every layer is delicious, from the cheese on top (it may be authentic "queso fresco," but I'm honestly not educated enough to know) to the grilled meat and onions in the middle to the edible shell the salad comes in. The Fajita Taco Salad used to have refried beans on the bottom, but it is now all rice on the bottom. It's still delicious though. I also used to enjoy some of their enchilada and burrito dishes. I haven't eaten them in 10+ years, but I have no doubt they're as tasty as they used to be. I won't discourage you from ordering their basic "combination" meals -- because I'm sure they're great too -- but I WILL encourage you to try some of their entrees and specialty dishes because those are where the best experience is at for El Azteca. read more

Wife and I are in town for a party and had a craving for Mexican. This is the only Mexican place in town so we had no choice but to try it out. The taste of the food was really good. I really enjoyed the taste of the Lobster Burrito and my wife liked the Cheese enchiladas. The only problem with this place is the fist small basket of chips is free and if you want refill on them it cost. So they brought us chips and salsa, we ordered cheese dip appetizer. One would think that when ordering cheese sip appetizer it would come with chips. Nope, we had to order more chips so we had to pay for them. When I got my burrito it was just soft shelled taco. It was the lobster meat with onions and peppers on the burrito shell. I had to wrap it. When I order a burrito I want to be able to pick it up and eat it. This was not the case. The wait staff was very short and not ones of many words. They really would not answer any questions and we had to hunt them down to order and get food. The only reason it got 4 stars is because the food tasted great!!! read more

I love going here with my friends. The food is amazing. The servers are friendly. And I love the atmosphere here. I usually go for lunch and get the lunch special quesadilla and split it. And they are kind enough to bring us an extra plate. But all of their food is good because I've gone with other friends and we've all been satisfied with our meals. DO NOT COME HERE: I love Mexican food and happen to be Mexican, they served shrimp fajitas with 4 pieces of shrimp, my chimichanga looked like a taquito... They charge for extra chips and salsa,sour creme, guac, ect and it all tasted horrible. I would pack a lunch if you were thinking about eating here!!! Server was nice but the food sucks. We stopped in Fredonia, NY after a long day of driving and noticed El Azteca while buying gas. Had a nice dinner including chiles rellenos (not deep fried) and a dish new to us: El Sina, which was a tasty mix of chicken and chorizo topped with cheese. Delicious. The horchata was good and so was the flan we shared for dessert. Full bar if that's important. Friendly, attentive staff. Nicely decorated. read more

If you're someone that takes people's asses, then you're an Assteca. Which is basically what this restaurant is all about. Only not really. But it is an excellent Mexican place, that is worth pulling off I-90 and paying the toll for. Especially since it's literally right off the exit, within a few seconds of going through the booth, so to speak. I've had some of their sides, such as chips and salsa which were good, and their Chile Relleno which was excellent. I'm hesitant to give them a 5 star rating because my tastes have become more advanced since then. I'm pretty sure we're talking about a Tex Mex menu here from start to finish but the Relleno was one of the better ones I've had, so it's teetering on a 5 star rating. However I'll have to go back and sacrifice myself to the Sun Gods of Tenochtittyland and give some more dishes a try before I can take the 5-star plunge. read more

As I took a quick, whirlwind tour down "memory lane" in the Dunkirk/Fredonia area, I was caught between a wave of nostalgia and surprise... So much has changed from the "old dayzzz" (early-mid 80's) when "South of the Border" was a squished burrito from Taco Junction, Asian food was just a rumor, and WINGS were the law of the land!! Now, the world has discovered Fredonia, and Fredonia has discovered the world...!! Sad and happy at the same time.... Enough of my time travels... All in all, this is an ok Mexican joint. We did a quickie lunch here on a Saturday at about 1:30 or so and pretty much had the place to ourselves. There weren't a ton of choices on the lunch menu-- I would have been happy to see the dinner menu, but it wasn't brought out to us. I was semi-happy with my chile relleno, though it oddly was just a stuffed chile without the egg covering. My brother's super nachos looked ok (but I think he was expecting more of a huge, dinner-sized portion...) and my nephew and s.i.l. both ordered beef tamales which were oddly smothered w/ground beef. Quick, polite service... Beware, noshers/cheapos... they charge for additional chips/salsa, and my s.i.l.'s request for extra sour cream (?!?) wasn't "on the house" either, but that's semi-understandable. My family and I eat here about every other month and have never been disappointed. The staff is always friendly and attentive. They never rush us and they keep the chips and salsa flowing! We've tried a lot on the menu and have never been disappointed but I really like the shrimp quesadilla. You can't mis with the queso dip either. Lots of gluten free options available. If you are looking for something fancy, this isn't your place, but if you want a good family friendly Mexican joint with great food and a good prices you can't do better than El Azteca in this area. read more

Meh. I'm a California girl so my standards are pretty tough. It was ok. I had a burrito: the sauce was a weird white sticky substance (cheese I guess) The carne asada was overcooked, rice unremarkable. Son had a combo with burrito, chalupa and taco. Says burrito and taco tasted like they were from Taco Bell. Chalupa was a giant tortilla chip covered in beans. Plate was 50% shredded lettuce. Service was very attentive and friendly. Brought a second drink before we finished the first. Little weird when they vacuumed in front of our table when we were still sitting here and told the crumbs to "come on!" My go to Mexican restaurant where I live, actually it was the only one until about a month ago. Lol. I'm not a huge Mexican food fan. When I get a craving I grab some, but I don't normally seek it out so I don't have a lot to compare it to. This place is located in a shopping plaza so there's plenty of parking. The inside is authentically decorated and clean. They have a full bar and frozen margaritas daily. I believe Monday and Tuesday's they have $2.99 margarita special. The wait staff is always friendly and attentive. I usually stop by for a quick lunch. They have a limited lunch menu that offers around 15 combos ($5-$8) plus a few additional items. The dinner menu is larger and contains appetizers, combos, and many dinner options. I've always had a solid meal here with no complaints. The Rice is good. All the basics: tacos, enchiladas, and burritos are good. I think they shine with their free chips and salsa. The chips are always warm and the salsa is always fresh, smooth, and has the right amount of spice. Must be due to the new Mexican restaurant in town, in an attempt to keep customers coming back, they recently started a customer loyalty card. This place is another local joke. Refried beans everywhere out of a can, cheap one at that, like diaper poop. I could wax on and on, but let's sum up their attitude year, going on for YEARS maybe since they opened.... Ya know how Mexican food, a lot of it, comes with little flour tortillas to fill yourself, with your meal? You know the ones, the ones you can get approximately across the street from this place at full retail (let alone wholesale bulk prices much cheaper) at Dollar Tree for a pack of 10 (tasty, fresh, simple good, as good as this places') for one measly $1??? This place only gives you 2 or 3... want more, PAY (like a couple of bucks, any amount too much!)! No where near enough for a meal... even cheap places will give more free dinner roles and those are not integral to the meal!!! And there prices are not low. Decided to try it because of so many people telling my father that is was good food. We arrived and stood there waiting to be seated for a few minutes. The workers just kept passing us and staring at us while we were waiting, which was very uninviting. We finally got seated, and a waitress brought over chips and salsa. The salsa was very watery and had no taste whatsoever. Then a waiter came over to take our order. A third worker brought out our food and told us the plates were hot. The thing is... our plates were very hot but the food wasn't. We both ordered 2 burritos with rice and beans. All of the food was flavorless! We were thinking that because it was a Mexican restaurant it would have flavor. Everything was terrible for our first visit there. We didn't ask for any other items because he had such an attitude. He left a couple of our drinks on another table. Nothing about this restaurant was good. Our family LOVES Mexican food. To start the server who greeted/served us was not friendly. I don't think I saw her smile the entire time we were there. She did not seem happy to be serving us. We ordered Queso and it came in a tiny dish and it was COLD! I didn't dare tell our server because she was already so miserable. The food was nothing exceptional, no flavor to the ground beef, no flavor to the refined beans and the Mexican rice was dry and tasteless. The kids meals were fairly priced until we realized that the pop was not included, a kids pop was $3! For five of us to eat, 2 Adults and 3 Kids, with no alcohol was $65! For rice and beans! Mexican food is not expensive to buy or prepare, I think they should take a look at their prices. Also they should see why their service staff is not happy to serve tables, if something is going on it should be addressed. We will never return. read more

Very good Mexican food, the crab casadia and it was out of this world good! Very tasty refried beans, rice was good. Service lacked a lot actually had to go hunt down the waiter twice, both times he was in the bar area with four or five other employees talking. Easily one of my favorite restaurants in all of Chautauqua County. I lived in Dunkirk for a while and went there a lot. Some might say I developed romantic feelings for the margaritas. After moving to Jamestown, I still drive to Dunkirk to go to this place. The staff is great, the food is great, and the chips and salsa... superb! Don't scoff at those frozen margaritas, even if you consider yourself a seasoned drinker. They can throw you for a loop. My go-to is the chilaquiles or lobster quesadilla. read more

An average Mexican joint with an expansive menu. One thing that is cool is that they offer so many different combo meals so you can typically find an order with everything you wanted to try in it. Food is decent, and you get watery salsa and warm chips brought to your table for free. I had a mushroom quesadilla and the ingredients were slightly better than I expected. My friend ordered a mixed drink and we watched one of the employees run down the plaza to pick up some orange juice from the store for it. That's dedication. read more

Don't recommend. Their burritos are messy and mushy. I ordered two burritos, rice and beans and everything but the rice was nasty. I wouldn't go back unless I was starving and this was the only place open. The tortilla on my burrito was like wet, slimy, and when I tried to cut into it it pulled apart like glue.
