Pork Carnitas and Carne Asada
Lauren W.

Stopped here while passing through Erie. Casual Mexican restaurant with booths, tables, and a bar inside. We were greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. Service is very friendly and attentive. Our food came out quick. I ordered pork carnitas and my husband ordered carne asada. We both really enjoyed our meals. The carne asada had a ton of flavor and was very juicy. Good spot to eat.

Peach frozen margarita on special Monday

Margaritas were perfect consistency and flavor, not real strong but delicious. Salsa was great, service attentive and the entree was fantastic with great variety of flavors. Clean facilities too!

Torero Nacho with ground beef, fantastic and what a find this local restaurant in Erie, PA turned out to be. Always love a place that should be on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and services great food and has a friendly and attentive staff. Great place, reasonable prices, huge portions, and worth the visit.

Mojara and Burrito Torero

This felt very authentic, and that's coming from someone who has spent a good amount of Holidays with Mexicans. The burrito was delicious, the cheese sauce made every bite heavenly. The beans, salad, and rice were delicious and just as important in the meal as the fish. The fish had a touch of spice that mingled with the onions perfectly. Overall, it was a delicious meal. The servers were very quick, in the best way possible. The place itself was colorful and had hispanic music playing. It really added to the vibes.

Accidentally found this restaurant, very close to our hotel, seems to be very popular in the area. Husband ordered the fajitas quesadilla and i got the whole fried fish. Both are great! Their bean paste taste so good! Love it! Rice too, but not dare to each too much rice.

Burrito en el Huerto

Never heard of this chain and assumed it was a local place, didn't realize it was a chain until doing research after! Food is far from authentic Mexican but pretty good regardless. The menu is huge and has a lot of interesting vegetarian options! I got the Burrito en el Huerto. I thought it was odd that they didn't close the ends of the tortilla, but, since it was smothered and not meant to be picked up and eaten with the hands, this didn't have much of an effect on the eating experience. The sauce they smothered it in was really good with just a hint of heat, and the filling tasted nice and fresh. I had never tried cactus before and I loved it in this! Because this entree only comes with chopped lettuce on the side (no rice and beans), it's a little bare-bones, but great if you want something lighter. My dad, who I was with, ordered the Pollo Fundido, which was topped with melted slices of American cheese. Never seen American cheese in "Mexican" food before and thought this was very odd but he swears it was good so I'll take his word for it. Our food out super fast after we ordered. All of the staff we dealt with were very friendly. Again, not the most authentic, but I think it's a good place if you're looking for something kind of different.

the watered down marg this place serves now. didn't used to be this way.

Check their page on FB if you want to see about new special menu items from time to time. I also saw on there that they were open a few times on Saturdays last summer, in addition to Sunday. Plenty of outdoor seating, tables were clean and well maintained. The food was very good!! We tried several different menu items, but it would take at least 3 or 4 visits to try everything available. My favorite item is their tamales (if you haven't tried these, they are well worth it, in my opinion). They had two kinds of tamales: green salsa with corn/cheese or brown mole sauce with pork. Personally, I would order at least two tamales. Also, we had steak tacos that came with red sauce on top. The red or green salsas (sauce toppings) were the only spicy components. Everything else was very flavorful, but not off-putting at all -- for those people who aren't sure about trying spicy food. I'm sure you could just ask them to leave off the salsa on top of the tacos, if you prefer not to risk it, although if you like spice then it's great! The tacos are also served with grilled onions on the side, fresh lime wedge and sliced radishes to decorate the plates. They come with fresh cilantro in the tacos, as well, which I really liked. If you aren't familiar with the Mexican-style roasted green jalapeño peppers on your plate, just skip them --or-- for the adventurous, be aware that all of the heat is in the seeds. Personally, I love them but I don't eat too many of the seeds. As an appetizer item, I ordered a tostada. If you're not familiar with tostadas, think open-faced cracker with lots of toppings. It's actually a corn tortilla that's been deep fried so it's very crispy and thin -- that's the part I think of as a cracker. Then on top, you have fresh pico de gallo (chopped tomato, probably onion, probably cilantro) and the meat topping of your choice (chicken, beef, etc.) I had chicken on mine. It's a little messy to eat, but entirely delicious. They give you plenty of napkins and don't be afraid to use your hands (or ask for a plastic fork which they have available). If you get thirsty, there's a list of cold drinks (authentic Mexican soft drinks called Jarritos and American soda pop, plus bottled water for sale). I've heard sometimes La Chona Movil makes soup (Menudo or Pozole). I'd love to try either one of these, next time the cooks in the kitchen have the inspiration. Overall, the atmosphere was comfortable although you are eating next to the side of the house in a quiet, residential neighborhood. There is a large park nearby, so you could take food over there to eat or just get everything to-go and eat at home. The food was worth the price, especially since a lot of restaurants are super expensive these days. I ordered extra pork tamales and ate them again for breakfast the next day with my coffee. We will definitely return again soon. We drove in all the way from Edinboro, but while we were in town we also went to the Peninsula -- so that's another idea for a Sunday afternoon... Chona Movil and Presque Isle beach sunset, all in one afternoon!! Erie at it's best!
