Mini bandeja paisa (left out the steak, no karne)

Best hole in the wall. No frills, no fuss -- Latin food cooked by tias! Husband and I found this quaint location by accident, and as we are chicharron lovers, we tried it. The best Latin food so far, and we've tried a few (along Ditmars and Steinway) and this trumps them all.

Cheese Empanada ($1.25) delicious!

I had brought and ate the bandera dish that comes with goat and tripe stew, shrimp ceviche, and rice. Overall, it was delicious and really good. The service there was also attentive and pleasant that they even give me a sweet slice of cake for a complimentary dessert. I couldn't agree more! Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

The food is excellent but the billing is questionable to say the least. We won't go back…read more Somehow our bill went from $39 to $55.20 after ordering a $5 slice of flan for dessert. That's a difference of $16.20, which was more than my $15 entree (steak with rice, beans, and tostones). They took it upon themselves to include a 15% tip on debit ($7.20) after my wife had already tipped with $10 cash (which was returned when we questioned it). They charged us $3 extra for a side of beans that should have been included with my wife's $21 fried fish platter. Initially they didn't charge anything for a $4 lemon beverage that was ordered by a misunderstanding, but once we ordered the flan after the bill came out the first time they corrected that mistake. Granted these are small charges, but the overall feeling we were left with was a bad taste. The bill turned out higher than what we initially expected and was no bargain considering we didn't even order an alcoholic beverage. It felt like we were paying a sucker surcharge.

I'm not going to pretend that I am the best person to determine what an authentic Colombian experience is (never had the pleasure of visiting Colombia), but if this isn't it, I can't imagine what they're missing. The staff speaks to you in Spanish exclusively, which made me glad one of my boys is Honduran. The TVs all over the place are playing what appear to be Colombian music videos that were made in the 80s featuring old men and attractive young women. They've got buckets of Colombian beer and frosted mugs so cold that the beer turned to slush around the sides. They've got a platter called the Bandeja la Berraca that consists of rice, beans, steak, plantains, eggs, avocado salad, little corn cakes, blood sausage, other sausage (amazing), and a giant side of chicharron. Eat and drink to you're bursting, while adorable Colombian kids run around the place. And rejoice that you live in NYC, where these things can be had.

Why 4 stars? Because these arepas were different, but enjoyable…read more --- --- --- To-date, I apparently have only had Venezuelan arepas and wasn't aware of how different Colombian arepas were. Colombian arepas (or at least the ones here) come with a sweet, corn tortilla and are more open faced: to be eaten with a fork. In the past, I've had flour tortillas that are designed more like a taco and eaten as a handheld. So despite the differences, I (and my friends) enjoyed our meal. Let the official record state, I ordered the arepas con queso with chorizo. We had plans to eat our way through Jackson Heights, but because a couple of the places we planned to visit were closed, we actually just mostly hung out here and enjoyed our arepas of the sweet and open-faced variety. It was a good afternoon.

This was my first time trying an arepa, and honestly it was one of the best introductions I could…read morehave asked for. Before this, if someone mentioned arepas, I probably would have confused them with pupusas, which I'd only seen at street fairs and thought of as more of a sweet item. I had no idea they came in savory versions too. I went with the carne asada arepa, and the beef was fresh, juicy, and cooked just right. It's so common for places to overcook little chunks of beef, but here it was perfect. Each arepa is big enough to split between two people, so the price feels very fair. The filling was generous, with beef packed inside and even overflowing out the sides. They also serve the arepas with a rack of five or six sauces to choose from. Some were spicy, and one had a sweet condensed milk flavor if you like a mix of sweet and savory. My go to ended up being this green mayonnaise sauce which I assumed was like some sort of a lime mayo, which added the perfect tartiness to the rich cheese filling.
