We came here on a whim, but turns out the food was pretty good! I really liked the Papusas!

Could it be? Someplace where I love the papusas AND the tamales?!…read more I was craving chicken tamales and stumbled across La Familiar...and wished that it could've been sooner. They put a generous amount of chicken that had this delicious red sauce on it. Not sure what it's called but I loved it. They were thick, hot, and spiced beautifully. The elote tamales were, in a word, impeccable. They offered a fried option which was surprisingly delicious. The steamed ones set the bar pretty high yet here we are. Meeting and exceeding. You have the option of w/wo crema. The papusas were fluffy, filled just enough, and came with interesting fillings. I'm used to seeing pork, bean, and cheese. They offered squash (a touch of sweetness), bean and mint (literally blown away with how much I love this), and chipilin (adore). For context, Chipilin tastes like spinach and watercress had a baby. I noticed the cheese having a slight tang, but it wasn't off putting. Just different than other places I've tried. My only "gripe" (if you even want to call it that) was the curtido. It tasted good but something was off. Not off enough where I would avoid it, but it just wasn't the same. This is coming from someone who is extremely picky about that condiment. Not too fond of cabbage so maybe that's why. Now, the best for last...PASTELITOS! These amazing little pockets of happiness are stuffed with either chicken or beef and OMG OMG OMG. Every bite was pure happiness. It kinda reminded me of kibbeh. The handmade tortillas were amazing the next morning with some eggs and ricotta salata. So, if you're deciding on where to eat today, tomorrow, or next week...come here. I promise there will be something you love :D

That said, the service here is WAY better- not slow at all, they actually check on you and still use real plates (our place has gone to those paper baskets that they serve like burgers and fries in, which is fine but ...yeah!). In any event, the portion sizes are good and the slaw is awesome, we never have issues with the service but parking can be tight when they're packed. Overall solid and affordable pupusa option.

I ordered three chicken and cheese pupusas, and they were a great size. I was nearly full after the first two. The flavor was on point. My apologies for my photo because I was already halfway through my third pupusa before I remembered to snap a picture. I also tried the corn tamale, which my wife and I enjoyed a lot. On top of that, I ordered a steak taco, which unfortunately didn't make it into a picture either because I ate it too fast. What stood out to me was the "shell." Instead of the usual flour or corn tortilla, it uses the same masa dough as the pupusa, and I really enjoyed that difference. We finished our meal with the nuegados en miel dulce, something I had never tried before. I was glad I did because it was delicious and a great way to end the meal. Overall, the food and experience were excellent. If you are like me and rely on Yelp reviews to decide where to eat, I highly recommend giving La Casita Pupuseria & Market a visit. You will be well pleased like I was.

We were sat right away and I was surprised at how big the restaurant is (way bigger than it looks from the outside!). I started with a hibiscus margarita, which was delicious. Then we ordered a few things to split, including: guac and tostadas, charred cabbage, gorditas with chorizo, aguachile negro, and the beef short rib platter. The charred cabbage was the biggest sleeper hit. It was so flavorful and unlike anything I've ever had before. Everything else was delicious, although the aguachile was probably my least favorite of what we tried. We finished with the rose water tres leches and the dulce de leche crepes. The tres leches were pretty good but the crepes were amazing. I don't usually love dulce de leche, but it was definitely a standout.

If you are planning to visit during popular dining hours, it might be worth it to make a reservation. We arrived during a weekend around 5:30 pm, and the place was somewhat empty. However, by 6-6:15 pm, the place was PACKED. I was a very surprised (in a good way) that the menu was a bit smaller compared to other Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants in the area. I necessarily do not think the smaller menu is a bad thing because, with a smaller menu, a restaurant can focus on preparing everything well (i.e., it's easier to do a good job with 20-item menu versus a 50+-item menu). For my dining pleasure, I went with the enchiladas suizas with a few margaritas. Overall, I thought my plate was very delicious; however, other diners at my table and I noticed that the portion sizes were a bit small for the price. Perhaps, the restaurant uses higher quality ingredients for its dishes. Although the margarita sizes might appear to be small, they definitely are not "small" in power/punch, so the $13-$18 price range is appropriate. My favorite margarita of the night definitely was the El Jardinero, which was a wonderful mix of carrot, cilantro, peach, lime and a semi-spicy pepper of sorts. Collectively, we all thought the service was exceptional because our waitress constantly visited the table. Personally, I thought it was a bit overkill, but that's a very, very minor complaint based on my very, very personal preference.
