Pomme Sucre - Carrot cake

I'm not sure why this place doesn't have a 5 star rating. Perhaps it's because the place itself is…read morea bit small and can only seat maybe 15 people maximum with no option to stand at a bar table/ledge. But the cake. My god the cake is the best thing I've had in 3 weeks of travelling across Spain The carrot cake has this lightness to it. And the mascarpone (I think) topping is also very airy and light, with the right amount of sweetness to complement the cake. Inside the cake is pastry cream. This is important because most carrot cakes use cream cheese which can feel too sweet and fatty/creamy. Only 3.9 euros for this delicious masterpiece. A way better deal than some of the hybrid pizza and cake shops that are just a few blocks up the street (perhaps it's more touristy on the main road) I could've eaten the whole cake. Wish I was in Spain longer so I could camp outside and try a bunch of the new cakes that she makes. Would come again x100 and would recommend to my family and their family's family ;)

We popped over to Madrid this past weekend to visit a few friends and in typical Spanish fashion,…read morenone of them were wanting to eat until at least 2:30pm. I get seriously testy if I don't eat within an hour of waking up so I turned to Yelp to find a quick breakfast spot to help me survive until our mid-afternoon lunch. Pomme Sucre came to the rescue. After a 5 minute walk I arrived to a bright and clean bakery with a display of gorgeous pastries and a nice selection of baked goods. J and I were starving so ordered our two café con leches and then decided to share the croissant mixto, croissant de almendra, pain au chocolat and the pastel de crema. The croissants tasted like they had been baked only minutes before and each one was so tasty. The ham and cheese they used for the croissant mixto had nice flavours and was topped with a light cream cheese to tie everything together. The chocolate and the almond croissants were both perfectly sweet but not over the top. And the cream cake was light and delicious. We washed everything down with their coffee and couldn't believe that we got everything for around €12. This place may not provide a typical Spanish breakfast but you will not regret it!

I had walked down Gran Via towards Plaza Mayor with the intention of grabbing a snack at Mercado…read moreSan Miguel. Sadly, it is closed for renovation and upgrades. As I was walking back towards Gran Via, I found El Riojano and stopped in. There is the pastry shop in the front and a cafe in the back. I was seated immediately and almost all of the tables were full. This is a very casual place. The menus were on the table, and a server came quickly to take my order. I ordered a cappuccino and a puff pastry with spinach and goat cheese. Both were good and exactly what I needed for a bit of energy. I asked for the pastry to be heated, and it was slightly warm (still cold in the middle). My only critique is that I wish the pastry had been a bit hotter. A steady stream of people arrived and departed while I was there so this seems to be a popular place. I would visit again and look forward to trying one of the bartolillo (traditional to Madrid).

The pastries were great. I tried the Roscon which was fresh and airy. Not overly sweet either. We had a short wait of 10 minutes and also took some pastries to go after. Staff was veryyyyy busy and not the most attentive but otherwise friendly and helpful.
