They were very eager to serve, and treated us- especially our 2 year old- very nicely. The food was both unique and delicious. The salsa was good and the chips were super fresh. I often get nachos at Mexican restaurants, and I've never had nachos like this. Today I had the nachos with steak and shrimp which I definitely recommend. DO NOT worry about portion sizes or price. Since it's one of the only places to eat in town I've given this place multiple opportunities. Once I was charged for drinks we didn't drink (( margaritas)). The next time I ate there my chili really and I was completely burnt to a Crisp and it wasn't even edible I'm talking bottom of it was black and hard they had cooked it so much. And then today they had me wait 40 minutes on a single to go order I was very specific about what I wanted to order and I didn't want a large size of guacamole but whenever I get there she told me $13.77. She had me the change back and she only gave me two dollars out of 20 so I ask her about it and she said the guacamole was five and I said though that's not what I ordered I wanted a small side of guacamole... and then she brought the change back and the change still wasn't correct. I don't know if this is one of those places that they will just charge you for stuff that you didn't actually order on purpose or not but it's kind of starting to seem like it. This small place in the heart of downtown offers magnificent hospitality from their staff and decent food. There is literally no wait even on a Saturday afternoon with a group of ten. The food came out to the table hot and ready to eat. Everything from the taco salad to the fajitas were good according to my party, mine however tasted like Taco Bell standard. The cheese was not melted on my soft taco and the enchilada was heavy on cheese and light on the beef. I feel I will give them another time to see. I really wanna try their margaritas. read more

I have been here a few times I always tip 10.00 I don't get the chips .I order only chicken onion cilantro and the shell but they charge me extra for getting cilantro but I don't get the lettuce, I don't get the sour cream, I don't get the tomato, I don't get the cheese, I don't get the beans....but they charge me more but I only ask for chicken shell onion and cilantro I use the shell to dip in the salsa I wanted this place to be my go to...the waitress knows me and I live close but after tonight I am not going back I always tip ten bucks too, but if i have to get charged for cilantro but i forfeit the cheese the sour cream the tomato the lettuce and the beans i am getting a raw deal the owner kept saying something about if you go to a gas station you can't substitute....a gas station compared to a local restaurant I just wanted to be a regular at weight the cost restaurant owner before you send away a great customer who tips always 10 bucks nothing less weight the cost I get less but you make me pay more...all I wanted was to make this place my go to I am a waitress and getting off work on my way home to eat used to be nice read more

I've been wanting to visit this place for four years and I finally did. I've heard nothing but good reviews about it, but my experience wasn't so good. The waitress I had automatically deserves 5 stars. She was very sweet and polite and did her best. The reason for the three stars is because of the food and the manager. I had an enchilada, which on the menu only states that it has chicken and cheese, with lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream on the side. It came with a LOT more than that. I got my plate and it was overflowing with peppers and onions and other things. I was not expecting that, it was never explained to me that the plate came with all of that, so I never wanted it. I was kind and polite and talked with my waitress who took it back and got it fixed for me. After everything was fixed, the food was bland. Despite having chicken and cheese, there was no flavor. I tried adding sour cream and lettuce to my enchilada to get some taste to it, but it still wasn't giving me any flavor. I decided to get a to go box for it so I can give it to a family member later, and order a small plate of chicken fingers and fries. My waitress got busy, which is understandable, so the manager came over. When I asked if I can order a small plate of chicken fingers and fries, he seemed very annoyed to be serving me. Every time he came to my table, he acted like he did not want to serve me. The place only had a couple other small tables, so it was not busy. I was also never rude, remained very polite and respectful, and apologized for mistakes that I made. I got my plate and was very surprised and disappointed by the chicken. They were so small, and so thin, it was almost like I was trying to eat a piece of paper. The chicken was thinner than my finger and I have small child-sized hands. And just like my last plate, it was bland. No flavor in the chicken or fries. I put salt and pepper on them and tried to season them, but still no taste and the chicken was chewy. When I attended the University of Montevallo there was only one Mexican restaurant. They had great margaritas, but the food always left something to be desired. El Agave filled that gap. El Agave has excellent food and some very unique dishes. I've never had a bad meal from this establishment and I've had the opportunities to branch out to some different cuisine because of their diverse menu. I prefer to eat at Agave due to its proximity to my home, but it also has the best prices in comparison to nearby Mexican places and great quality food. They have a lot of margarita flavors, my favorites more importantly ;) which are peach and mango! The cheese dip is great most of the time! Sometimes it's a little runny but they fix it very quickly when it is. Food ALWAYS comes out super fast! They keep a small staff, so it's easy to get to know the employees there and they are very friendly and like to get to know you as well! The space is smaller than Zapopans but I actually prefer it, Bc it's quite cozy and private so you don't feel like everyone and their mom can see and stare at your while you eat. Nice paintings and designs so you feel like you're somewhere Latino. They have margarita day almost everyday so you can't beat that either! I love Él Agave!! read more

I was pleasantly surprised the first time I ever ate at El Agave. For years there had only been the one Mexican place in town, and Agave easily blew their cuisine out of the water. Freshly made salsa and margaritas in many flavors, not too greasy dishes, and GREAT service really set it apart all while being priced reasonably. Now this is the only Mexican Restaurant I'll eat at. Margarita nights are from 2-9 every Tuesday and Thursday. Look for other drink specials as well as lunch specials throughout the week. read more

We eat here about twice a month and usually split the full order of shrimp nachos on the appetizer menu. We got an order last night and the jalapeños were the hottest I've ever tasted in my life. We usually get them with jalapeños and no problems so I guess this was a recent change/really hot batch? I thought my boyfriend was having a stroke, his face was turning different colors and he started shoveling ice from his drink in his mouth. Fun times...we threw them away. read more

El Agave drove away their two most loyal customers tonight. The restaurant was pretty packed, which is usual for a Thursday night, but every college boy in there was extremely drunk. They were screaming across the restaurant to each other, standing on top of chairs, and yelling about wildly profane things. They were cursing very loudly, being vocally racist, sexist, and just overall rude and aggressive. Oh, but it gets worse. An adult woman (probably late 40's) was JUST as drunk as them. She was standing on top of chairs, yelling profane things to the boys, and even touching them in a sexual manner. This ALL was happening while we were just trying to eat dinner. It was clear that all the families there were very uncomfortable. None of the staff said anything to them. When we were ready to pay, we asked why the staff didn't tell them to leave and they said they aren't allowed to. El Agave was an important part of my college life and it's a shame that I, as a woman, no longer feel safe or comfortable coming back. read more

My husband and I went to El Agave at 9:15pm on Friday night (they close at ten.) There were only a couple of other patrons in the restaurant, but it took over 20 minutes for our food to be served. This was probably because all four servers who were working were sitting down to eat right after we were seated. Our server was pretty attentive to us, even though she was more attentive to the meal she was eating. Our food was good, but I don't think we'll be back any time soon due to the rude way were treated as soon as the clock struck ten. One waitress (not ours), came over to our table at the moment the hour hand landed on the ten to tell us our check was waiting up front for us. The other two servers who did not wait on us chose that moment start singing the song "Closing Time" and to start loudly conversing about the plans they had for after they got off work. It was so rude...we weren't quite done with our food, but lost our appetites immediately. I doubt we'll be back any time soon. read more
