Very good American Mexican food! We order from here all the time & I get the shredded chicken quesadilla w/o the onions & bell peppers (so just chicken, cheese & tomatoes) & the chicken is flavorful & tasty. The tortilla it is wrapped in is toasted so it is crispy & wonderfully tasty. Their salsa is mild to medium heat & the cheese dip is just queso w/o jalapeños in it. I usually mix them together & drizzle it over my quesadilla & it tastes fantastic! Hubby gets 2 beef Enchiladas w/a side of Mexican rice & occasionally a beef crunchy taco. The enchiladas are beefy & the mole sauce is wonderful! The rice is light & fluffy according to the hubz. Taco is American style w/crunchy shell, seasoned beef, cheese, lettuce, & tomato. I'm often concerned when a restaurant expands from past experiences but they still have great service and the food is still good. I order the shrimp fajitas and they were very good with large portions. I started with a top shelf margarita and it is much better than the standard margarita. Hmmmmm...so. This is sad to write. I am a loyalist to this place and have been coming since I was at Montevallo back in 19...well, let's not say the year. Tonight I went in had one SMALL strawberry margarita. They wanted to close early and so they started complaining and refused to give us water past 7:30. I have never in my life had such bad service or been treated like this. Food isn't great and so we will go across the street or back to the Montevallo location. Zapopan is a locally owned business that has done very well over the years and has provided Calera with a great staple for the local people. Came here late at night (about 40 minutes before closing), because everything else was closed. Such quick service and friendly staff. Flautas we're very good, combination G was also good. Okay I love authentic Mexican foot, but I have to give this red 3 stars. Not because of poor service, but because the food is just ok. My boyfriend and I come here when we want to get a quick bite to eat and don't want to drive too far into town. I will give this restaurant 4 stars for their queso and chorizo dip, which are fantastic. The menu offers a variety of meals, but I haven't noticed I haven't saw or noticed anyone refer to signature dish. My boyfriend normally orders the nachos with grilled chicken/steak or their shrimp tacos. I love taco salads, but theirs are horrible. The don't drain all of the grease off, so you will end up with a lot of excess grease in the bottom of your plate. I've tried asking them to drain the grease, but it didn't work. I stick with ordering the chicken quesadillas or chicken nachos, which are just okay compared to other places I've eaten at. I will say that we've never had a bad experience with customer service. Our waiters/waitresses are always polite and attentive. Overall my rating for this restaurant is 3.5 stars. read more

Waited a full hour between ordering and actually getting the food. And good luck trying to get anyone's attention to ask what's up. They'll go out of their way to avoid talking to you. I really enjoyed my experience here. The food was wonderful and full of flavor. Not to mention the drinks... they have many different margarita options to choose from! I had the blue margarita and a chicken enchilada, which was a little bigger of a portion than a standard enchilada. The chips and salsa was typical, but the queso consistency was perfect. It's hard to find good cheese dip at random Mexican restaurants. My boyfriend ordered the tacos (pictured... notice that you can hardly see the tacos because of the toppings haha), which he also enjoyed. I only gave a one star because I had to. I go to several Mexican restaurants cause Mexican food is my favorite. This was by far the worse experience I have ever had at any restaurant. I asked for chicken nachos more than once even pointed to it when ordering. I received beef. I'm one of those I don't send food back so I tried to just enjoy it. I did have a margarita that was almost gone. I asked for two go boxes and a go cup for my child. They could have fixed the drink but was so rude in front of my kid acting like I'm trying to take the margarita out. Then I try to explain about the chicken beef mix up and two employees acted like it was my fault. Only received one go box not two. Never got my kids go cup. Supported this place for years even during covid. We eat here 5-6 times per month.we were there last week my daughter had beef nachos. She had raw hamburger and when I told the manager he laughed . A little "soupy", not much Chucky stuff but tasty. Queso very smooth with maybe a hint of a pepper. Good taste. Steak quesadilla very good. Steak has a good taste, a little on the salty side. No Mexican restaurant within 100 miles comes close. Order a Steak Flauta appetizer and a Zappooan Platter if you like variety. Authentic, good salsa, warm tortilla chips, and quite possibly the best (and strongest) margarita you have ever had. A must have weekly stop in Calera. read more

So as you pull up to the restaurant you'll think hmm this doesn't look like a typical Mexican restaurant. We decided to give it a try anyways since we looked at some positive yelp reviews. Plus we were in the mood for some Margaritas and tacos. I didn't want to drive all the way to Hoover. Best plan is to go on Tuesday and get you a frozen margarita. It'll be loud and everybody and their mom will be there but overall we had a good experience. Seriously the frozen margarita was only $2.75 and it was one of the best ones I've had a long while. Not sure what the food is like, did not get that far.... We were visiting from outa of town ( both of us are disabled, with Permanent DV tags, and Service dogs) Therin was the beginning of the TROUBLE. We entered the restaurant and were Immediately verbally attacked by the Manager screaming for us to leave. That he did not care he did not have to follow those ADA rules in his state. (ADA is FEDERAL law).. He was shown the paperwork from the doctor and though they did not have on their service vest (TO HOT 96 degrees and NOT required to wear by ADA) Would not provide us with a business card so we asked for the menu to take a picture of name and address, as my daughter picked up the menu and said we would step outside to get a picture, the Manager GRABBED her by Both of her arms pushing her towards the door screaming at her, I was behind her (with recent hip replacement) almost knocking me down. Police were called by us, we waited in the car until they arrived, explaining it all and showing all the documents and the ADA web page, One police officer was eager to learn the ADA rules, then asked if we wanted to press charges, being from out of town we declined and they headed in to INFORM the manager that he was WRONG and what the rules of ADA and NOT to do this again as he would be charged with ASSULT. We are still considering a possible civil suit. This was NOT Right for him to do, and I do hope if you go there with a service dog, that he has learned his lesson... So we ate at Sage Bar and Grill, we were Welcomed and even brought the dogs a big tub of cool water.. Big Thank You to that Manager (Justin) this place was awesome and Great food too !!! read more

Well, we where hoping with a brand new building and location the service and food would not disappoint. Well, it did. The service was poor from the moment we walked in the door with the host. My husband and I moved to Calera earlier this month and have already eaten here 3 times. He is Puerto Rican and eats more Mexican food than anyone I've ever seen, it's all he ever wants when it comes to restaurants, so moving to a new place we had to find our New Mexican staple. The previous owners of our home immediately recommended Zapopan and on google it had great reviews, not so much Yelp, which doesn't surprise me because the reviews here can be more harsh and/or realistic (actually one of the reasons I love Yelp so much!). We decided to give it a go and it did not disappoint! We've had the paella, fajitas, chili relleno, burrito, and of course chips and salsa. The drinks we've had are the blue margarita (their most popular- for a reason!), strawberry margarita (super strong and more bitter than sweet which I like, a lot of places put way too much syrup in it), and bottled beer (they don't have anything on draft but the selection is good). The servers are great, we were never lacking in anything, and the prices are even better! Most affordable alcoholic drinks I've ever seen! Going back soon. read more

Not to be a food snob, but if you enjoy good Mexican food, don't come here. The food appears to be made from frozen dinners thawed out and served on lettuce. The margaritas are excessively sweet I'm not sure they should call them sodas instead. The best thing about them was the salt on the rim. You need to Hire a good chef that can cook!!
