Allen Ave Elementary plays favoritism towards their white population…read more Fifth grade teacher Marissa Messina is an inexperienced teacher handling fifth Grade students despite not being qualified in my opinion and experience with her! She belongs in a kindergarten or first grade classroom, in the beginning of her teaching career! Teacher Messina doesn't offer students realistic study habits nor supports students transition to middle school. Minority students be careful of bias treatment! Females will get more attention and better treatment. White students will get several warnings and inappropriate behaviors are permitted under her care, as disclosed by students themselves. Teacher Messina allows students to just leave the classroom when school is over and disregards students safety or parents request based on enrollment consents. She has a history of meeting up with families after hours and going to her favorite students games/other and creating a bias environment. This was my child's & families experience at Allen Ave! This touched my heart because this type of treatment can be damaging to students with a poor support system! This type of treatment is unethical. Be CAREFUL parents! I write this to being awareness to parents & students of color in a school system that allows racial inequality and discourages diversity!

The school breathes it's faith with service projects like Double Bag Lunch, the Winter Shelter, blanket/shoe drives to name a few. The school offers many extra classes to expand the students horizons and also provide support for those who are falling behind. The extracurricular activities aren't limited to sports. They have many academic and service focused clubs and also have an amazing drama program that puts on musicals twice a year. Father Rich and Mrs Marquez are extremely dedicated and their commitment to the schools mission statement is unwavering. My family was welcomed with open arms from the beginning and have grown to consider the HNM parish and school family as my own. Many families come from 10+ miles away to be a part of this wonderful community. The school could improve in a few areas mainly in incorporating modern day conveniences that help working parents balance their responsibilities (online payments, more consistent communication and fundraising credit for SCRIP overage purchases). The school should also consider doubling up on some of its classes to lower the student:teacher ratio as it begins it's expected renovation/expansion project.

I feel that I'm a "picky parent" when it comes to schools, and we've been more than happy with the academics, extracurricular offerings, as well as a strong foundation rooted in Catholic faith. They hold the children to a high standard, and character development seems to be just as important as academics, as it should be. We have noted this in her performance as it is rated as outstanding by her teacher. The part that gets me about this school is it's elitist attitude toward parents who do not live in district. It is an unwelcoming environment for my daughter as she has complained a lot about the children, parents and administrators. I was troubled to see that they persecute children who are sick too through the tardy/absence process. I was literally told to bring my child in if she is still having a asthma attack by an administrator. If you thought this school was a good school, it is not. It is full of pretentious people, who are not even capable of appropriately stimulating gifted children. I plan to pull my child out of this school by the end of the year.
