I was touched by the Mom who wants a little extra time for a proper goodbye with her daughter as…read moreshe drops her at school. She mentioned they felt rushed by the Principal, who was apparently injecting a sense of urgency in the process of students disembarking from parents cars. A student who feels rushed at drop-off is unlikely to be at their best a few minutes later, especially when daughter just witnessed Mom's state of mind change from loving to irritated, annoyed, and frustrated. Again, we all agree a more positive experience at drop-off benefits the Student and the school. Schools in California haven't evolved fully to smoothly handle most students being dropped off by parents; when many schools were designed very few students had parents dropping them from family cars. Most students walked or arrived by school bus. Today's dangers have prompted parents to personally drop each child off. This approach results in more security for the students, but it leaves a typical elementary school with three hundred cars in single file dropping students. If each student got even a one minute hug and endearment, perhaps a reminder or admonishment, that would slow the arrival process and take 3-5 hours just to arrive. (Staggering start times could help.) Thoughtful parents might consider leaving home a few minutes early, and simply spend a minute or two for an unhurried farewell while still in the driveway at home, or at a convenient and safe spot along the way. Meanwhile parents could encourage the School Districts to consider design configurations optimized for parental drop-off. Just remember the State envisions us all on public transportation in another decade or two, and personal cars just a distant memory. And thank you for opening a discussion on how we can make our mornings happier.

The principle opens my door and grabs her backpack and i yell bye i love you. I know we want to just do a quick drop off but i don't want my child rushed, and i don't want her opening me car door and grabbing her stuff. Let me kiss my baby and tell her see you later.

Selecting a school for my children was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever made. I am…read moremore than satisfied with my decision to send them to HNM. The school breathes it's faith with service projects like Double Bag Lunch, the Winter Shelter, blanket/shoe drives to name a few. The school offers many extra classes to expand the students horizons and also provide support for those who are falling behind. The extracurricular activities aren't limited to sports. They have many academic and service focused clubs and also have an amazing drama program that puts on musicals twice a year. Father Rich and Mrs Marquez are extremely dedicated and their commitment to the schools mission statement is unwavering. My family was welcomed with open arms from the beginning and have grown to consider the HNM parish and school family as my own. Many families come from 10+ miles away to be a part of this wonderful community. The school could improve in a few areas mainly in incorporating modern day conveniences that help working parents balance their responsibilities (online payments, more consistent communication and fundraising credit for SCRIP overage purchases). The school should also consider doubling up on some of its classes to lower the student:teacher ratio as it begins it's expected renovation/expansion project.

All of the staff, including the Principal, are very approachable, and you can always reach out with any concerns. All of the staff truly make the school a great place to be. I feel that I'm a "picky parent" when it comes to schools, and we've been more than happy with the academics, extracurricular offerings, as well as a strong foundation rooted in Catholic faith. They hold the children to a high standard, and character development seems to be just as important as academics, as it should be. No school is without flaw, but it's nothing that you wouldn't find at any school. My daughter loves her school and church community.
