Jim repaired my Quick Mill Vertano 2B Evo when its vacuum relief valve seized up due to hard water scaling. He replaced valve, descaled everything, and rebuilt the machine. I had not noticed just how much the performance of my machine had degraded over the past eight years. It is working better today, than it did than it did before the valve seized. We unpacked our Elekra after five years in storage, and, unsurprisingly, it didn't work. The hubs and I started poking around online for a reputable repairman, and, luckily, we found Jim. The communication with Jim was via email and fairly informal. We were told to drop off the machine at his place in Palo Alto at the end of the week. Pick-up was the week following. From what I understand, Jim works almost exclusively on commercial machines, but squeezes in, at least, one home machine per week. At pick-up, the hubs was told what the problem with the machine had been, and, should there be a like problem, how to 'repair'/'reset' the machine ourselves. We did, indeed, need to do just that a few days after having the Elekra back in house. It was no fuss. Repair cost: 150.00 and very much worth it. read more

I called EJ Services based on perfect Yelp ratings, and I am here to add another one. I called EJ this morning, and he answered directly. How often does that happen these days? I briefly described my problem, that I have a Gaggia Classic, and that I cannot unscrew it to do a thorough cleaning. "Jim" admitted he has limited experience with the Gaggia, but that the screw I am having trouble removing is notorious for being tricky. He assessed I live in an area where the water is soft and unlikely to cause a mineral build-up problem. He offered to look at my machine and stated right out his fee starts as $75.00. Ultimately he endorsed my decision to perform a "backwash" cleaning of my machine at home, and not to worry too much about the more penetrating cleaning. Jim is my go-to guy for repairing my Gaggia home espresso maker. I bought a Gaggia machine 6 years ago from Peet's. One of the baristas there gave me Jim's contact info when I inquired as far as someone who was capable of doing repairs. I've been going to Jim since then and have never been disappointed. My roommate and I both use the Gaggia daily, so it receives fairly high-volume usage. Whenever something's not working quite right I take the unit over to Jim's place. Frequently he is able to get back to me on the same day with a diagnosis and usually the repair happens within 2-3 days, so we're back on-line in a very short time. The pump on my Gaggia Classic was broken and no longer putting water through. I finally took it to Jim because of his high ratings and convenience. Jim gave me multiple drop off times to choose from, and charged a very reasonable $75 to assess the machine. In about a week he had it fixed, for a total cost of $175. Jim is friendly, honest, professional, reliable, and extremely knowledgeable. He has been working on espresso machines for 30 years, and has a background as a certified plumber. TLDR: -Drop off/pick up seems sketchy at first -Grinder was repaired within a few hours of dropping it off -Jim was very helpful and I am satisfied with the experience -I would use his services again in a heartbeat The long part: I used his MV location. I believe he lives in Pacifica because his elderly mother's house is the location he sent me to. He runs it out of the side gate/yard, and when you walk through the side gate he has a table with espresso gadgets on it, you are supposed to leave it on the table with a note taped to it with your email/number/name/etc. He told me to just go through the side gate and not knock because his mother is very hard of hearing. His minimum grinder fixing charge is 45 dollars, which is what I paid. My grinder was shot to hell. Take my advice, NEVER buy a used grinder on eBay. The burrs had the texture of sea glass and the hopper was shattered. I bought new burrs and I could not align them properly. I could not get them to touch for the life of me. I have a Rancilio Silvia espresso machine and it takes a ridiculously fine grind, so I need the burrs to touch. I dropped off my grinder at 8 am ish and I got a call at 11:30 am ish saying it was done. I never actually saw Jim face-to-face, and the fact that I got to pick my grinder up before I paid him is nice. I paid him via PayPal after I got home. I would use his services again if, god forbid, my gear decides to go nuts again. read more

I highly recommend Jim as a bay area resident expert when it comes to pro-sumer espresso machine repair. My Brewtus II Expobar leaked and had very low pressure (less than 6 bars). I dropped it off with Jim, he quoted me a reasonable price which I agreed to pay. Jim fixed the leak. He also replaced a busted on/off switch, put in a new gasket, and fixed *one* of the pressure issues. I got the Brewtus back and it worked except sometimes pressure would drift +/- 2 bars. For no charge, Jim, took my machine back, diagnosed, and fixed the 2nd pressure issue. He kept me in the loop with photos and detailed updates. I'm very impressed with the results. Jim is great - very knowledgeable about mid to high end espresso machines. My Expobar Office Lever didn't pump out water (kinda important :)). I initially tried to debug it myself by googling the problem ... after a whole bunch of false leads I decided to take it to Jim. He is very quick with replies and responds right away between pretty much from 6am. Email is preferred method of communication but he also provides a phone number as your appointment gets close. Jim knows his machines so I wouldn't worry about taking high-end machines to Jim. He quickly found the problem with my machine and emailed me the cost of parts + repair. Once I approved the change he took care of the repairs. There are two locations - one in Pacifica and one in Palo Alto. The PA location is more of drop-off/pick-up spot but It is very convenient for people in the South Bay or Peninsula. I dropped it off on a Tuesday, he emailed the repair order on Thu and had it ready for me the following Tuesday! I mean wow, to see why that was so fast, why don't you first find a high-end espresso repair person and once you do see if they finish it so quickly. Have an Astra that leaked out the bottom and out the grouphead during pouring. Jim is great. Over email he's to-the-point and responsive, in person he's friendly and warm. Great communicator and easy to work with. He fixed the leak as well as put a new handle on my portafilter (it was cracked, and I didn't know it was possible to replace just the handle), installed a new grouphead gasket to fix the grouphead leak I also complained of, and installed a new button panel cover sheet free of charge because he noticed mine was a bit worn. Nice touch. Don't be put off by the pickup and dropoff procedure for south bay (drop off behind a gate at a palo alto residence). He runs a small business and this is how he manages to provide service to south bay folks. Don't worry... it's totally legit. Lastly, the cost of the service is very reasonable and actually beats by a fair mile the service I received for our other machine recently from another business on yelp. He's definitely now "my" espresso machine service person and I'm happy to have found one I can go back to. read more

I own The Proper Cup in downtown San Jose. When my machine went south six weeks ago, I had Jim come out to service it. It turned out to be a minor repair and Jim actually spent time adjusting my grinders with my staff. Afterward, Jim followed up with me and because of my having a problem sourcing the proper gaskets, he simply mailed out a few for my use. We now had another issue with a group head where the indication was it was a bad solenoid, so I scheduled another appointment with him. The price on the part is $130 alone. So I was fully prepared for a $400 plus bill. Instead, what I got was an e-mail from Jim stating the solenoid was fine and all that was needed was an adjustment...no charge!! Just had my Rancilio (Miss) Silvia serviced by Jim. He's the real deal when it comes to servicing and repairing espresso machines. He has decades of experience with commercial level machines and tuned up my Silvia to a "better-than-new" state, it appears! I have been using piston machines for more than 30 years--La Pavoni, Riviera, etc. It's really hard to find someone to service these machines if something goes wrong--especially since Thomas Cara closed down last year. I discovered Jim at EJ Services in Pacifica and he was amazing, nice, and very reasonable.
