Came here for a large group dinner on a weeknight. Our waitress was sweet and checked on us often, especially paying attention to when new members of our group came in so she could take their order. Menu is quite pricy. More than $30 for a burger. I got the schnitzel which was tasty and large and came with two sides for $35.50. The house Cabernet was good but surprised to see it cost $18 per glass. Overall, had a nice time here but likely wouldn't come back because of the high prices. read more

Lunched with four friends. Menu is hard to read, light small type on tan paper. Server not happy with our suggestion it would be kind for older eyes to make type bigger or darker...but the options all sounded tasty. She brought yummy gherkins, warm pita and creamy hummus for the table. Juicy high-quality burgers, yummy buns, really good fresh fries, chicken soup, edamame all added up to very tasty food. We were the only diners for most of our meal and clearly everything was cooked fresh because it took a while...but well worth the wait. It's a new world when a burger and fries is almost $30, but it's Kosher and quite delicious. Customer Service Inversion!!: Half empty restaurant; seated in the middle aisle where the tables for two are buffeted by wait staff on both sides. Could be a disaster for a date. Have been to the restaurant probably 20x. Asked for a different table and staff would not less us sit at a corner table in the event the owners comes because he prefers that certain corner table, despite the place being half empty. When i suggested that the owner would prefer that a guest stay and receive service, the staff said, no he doesnt' care. The matre d'table, a woman with blond hair, came outside to tell me after i had left once again that the table was the owner's table. I am not sure what she was hoping to achieve by repeating to me that he doesn't care who comes or goes and just wants his table. All food and wine took a long time to come. We had to joke about it because it was a ridiculous waiting time. 2. Miso soup was SOUR AF aka rotten. Tofu was baby food soft. It was foul beyond comprehension. Very politely I explained ask them to take it back. 3. Chicken kebab was poorly cut (huge chunks, I had to remove them and then slice them), and DRY. Very dry. As if they pulled a 1-week old pre-cooked chicken off the fridge and threw it onto a grill. 4. Side #1: green beans were softer than steamed or fried. And already peeling. Lol wut? 5. Side #2: Basmati rice. The whole upper outer layer was dry and hard. How could someone mess this up? Crunchy and unpleasant. Come on! 6. Wine glasses in different sizes. Alfasi was too acidic and it was meh (aka cheap). 7. When the bill came, I've added an 18% tip etc and signed. Then I saw the miso soup was still there. I asked my table if I should say something (soup was like 5$... compared to the bill it was nothing). They said 'you def should'. Politely I pointed out to our server. The server rolled eyes at me and made a face. I apologized a few times. I rip the bill because it was wrong and i had signed (safety, no?). Then she comes with a correction bill, only with the soup refund. I apologize and inform her that I ripped it. Again she rolled her eyes, sighed and made a face. I continued to apologize and say I didn't know. She says: "Ah, it's fine. I've had worse clients than you." Wow ok. 8. While I walk out I make sure to thank the staff (and manager?) and apologize one last time. Eyes rolling on me. 9. It's also unsettling to read their hiked-up prices from a bunch of crumpled home-printed sheets stapled together as what they call a menu. BONUS: there was a foil string wrap in the chicken (now that's a feat. how could they, where did...? I'm at a loss of words). I had to take a picture to prove it. MY THOUGHTS: The menu has so many options... And yet they didn't deliver a single dish or appetizer that we liked. They were all subpar. We even ordered the specials. Everyone was dissatisfied with their food. Despite the waiting staff constantly asking if everything is fine in an unwelcoming tone. Imagine a 1-dollar-shots dive bar trying to play fancy restaurant and fails miserably. Yep, it's that bad. Everything indicated it was all many-days-old food thrown into a microwave or grill. It's about to get real Jewish up in here. I came here for a Shabbat dinner event. It's incredibly dark and small, and felt cramped, but they handle large parties well, it seems. Their servers were scurrying around between the kitchen and the dining area, and taking care of everything. I tried several things: chicken and vegetables, vegetable sushi, General Tso's chicken, chicken nuggets, beef chulent, Israeli salad, and challah. The food was decent and average. It's definitely not above three-star level. My favorite was the chulent! It needed a dash of salt and pepper, but I enjoyed it the most out of the selection. We had the pleasure of a Chol HaMoed Pesach dinner at Eighteen. We made reservations the day before and had no issue being seated once our whole party had arrived. The hostess was an informative Israeli ema and made sure we knew what was what. The mergez appetizer was a great starter. I had the perfectly grilled pargyote with french fries. It was a great treat to eat out after after having cooked for Pesach! The other guests enjoyed delicious burgers on Passover non gebtoktz buns and hearty portions of salmon. Wow, where to begin. After initially looking at the menu, our group settled on this place because it is one of the few kosher restaurants on the Upper East Side that will accommodate a large group. When we made the reservation, we assumed we would have access to the full menu, but that was not so. Instead, they sent us two prix fixe menu options, one for $53 a person and one for $63 a person which is ridiculous considering those prices didn't even include tax or tip. We chose the $53 menu which only included some appetizers, a measly 3 entree options (chicken, chicken, and "burgers"--not even a vegetarian option!), a few odd choices of sides, and assorted cookies for dessert (which we didn't even get btw, the gave us sliced melon and pineapple instead)! The "burgers" were really just a piece of meat in between a tiny bun. No sauce or toppings at all, which was on theme for the rest of the food as well. Everything was extremely bland and unseasoned. Just moved to the neighborhood last year and heard about this place from a dear friend. Walking in I wasn't sure what to expect, but let me tell you I wasn't disappointed. If you are looking for a cozy restaurant on the Upper East side with phenomenal food for a great price, then look no further than Eighteen. There is so much variety on the menu, that it truly has something for everyone. The traditional (yet artisanal crafted) dishes are so delicious that they a way of pulling anyone back to their Bubbe's best dinners! On top of that when was the last time you can say that you were greeted (and genuinely engaged) by both the owners, staff, and head chef? When you are here, you are home! The specials are amazing but the staples (sushi truffle pizza, cigars, fresh soups, and HUGE salads) take center stage as they compete to be your favorite dish. The combination of quantity and delicious food is only offset by the warm and welcoming atmosphere (Ask for Tammy and Rachel). Unfortunately, I have never had a good experience here. I have been here 3 times and service has been very poor each time. The restaurant was never particularly crowded, but food still took over 1 hour every single time. In one instance, the waitress waited over 20 mins to return to our table to tell us the item we ordered was actually not available that night. Food is overpriced but generally tasty. This was a highly rated place and I wanted lunch around noon, when it opens, so I stopped in. My wife and I were the only people there. I ordered the 18 burger and she ordered the texmex burger. It took then half an hour to get us our food, even though nobody else even walked in while we waited. She enjoyed her burger, and the bite I had was tasty. Mine was another story. It wasn't that it tasted bad, it just tasted like nothing. I've never had a burger before not taste like anything. I was somewhere between extremely frustrated and impressed. The fries were extremely greasy and not resembling crispy, which is how I like them. This is a solid choice for kosher meat on the upper east side that will deliver large portions and pretty good value. -Appetizers - I'd definitely try the falafel and cigars. Chummus is always perfect, although I would love a different type of spicy sauce (i.e. not just charif). Would love if they had a spicy pepper sauce. I would also love if they had a boneless buffalo fried chicken or something more like what mocha burger offers. -Chicken Tacos - this was a special we ordered, and was excellent. Came with lettuce, fresh herbs and some kind of garlic aoli that was great. The tacos also seemed very fresh. Only downside was that there was a piece of chicken that was very tough/inedible -Fried Cauliflower - another special, highly recommended, although I would serve with a special sauce instead of tahini -Burgers - seems to be the most ordered category on the menu, they are very large and come with a wide selection of toppings. Sides (fries, salad, rice etc) are also very generous. Save room for these! I'd love if they had a special sauce, or maybe pickles or banana peppers with them for options. -Sushi - Excellent quality, and I liked the crispy rice "poppers". Sushi is very consistently good here and a great option for those not eating meat -Israeli food (kabobs/shnitzel) - I've had these on occasion, they know what they are doing! Would recommend baby chicken kabobs. -Service - I was there at 7pm on a Tuesday night and although the restaurant was about 75% full, the service was excellent. Food arrived very quickly and our orders were taken with a smile! Cons: -Drink menu - I would suggest that they hire a professional mixologist to help curate a better selection. For example, the margarita was made with sour mix instead of actual lime juice and simple syrup and would have come out better. They may attract a more affluent crowd with a better drink menu. I'd recommend whiskey/honey combinations. -Ambiance - 18 is like a cross between casual and formal. The current emphasis seems to be on the burgers and Israeli food and I think they should emphasize a good steak (i.e. at a $60 price point) as well. Mocha burger has something like that. A simple steak frites (as opposed to a $130 prime rib) may do better for your average kosher crowd. read more

As far as kosher restaurants in this area go, this place is fair. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you don't absolutely need to eat a kosher meal as the food is average and the prices are steep. The hummus appetizer wasn't too bad. The pita was soft and the hummus flavorful. My husband had the burger with "beef bacon" which was okay. The French fries were a bit mushy and not crispy which was disappointing. The sushi was fine but nothing special and the fish seemed a little old. The wait staff was excellent and they allowed me to customize the sushi which was very nice of them. The place is small inside but comfortable and they have some spaces to accommodate large parties. 18 restaurant performed unethical business practice. On Friday 6/18/2021 at 11:56 am, I ordered a Shabbat meal for four, for a total cost of $175.14. The order was placed through Grubhub. The food was never delivered although I was charged for it. Next day, I called Grubhub and got credit on my credit card. I called 18 restaurant and the manager said that the order was cancelled 3 minutes after placing it, then he changed his mind and said that the food was dropped off at my doorsteps. When I told him that the building has a doorman, the man got vulgar and told me to go and F myself and hang up on me. My daughter with her 5 weeks old infant arrived home from the hospital and I disappointed her. There was no food for Shabbat. read more

Great kosher spot on the upper east side. The restaurant is owned by a family of Israeli's and they make sure everything is fresh. What's great about this place is that they have a vast selection of food items to order from. They have a huge selection of hot and cold apps, classic burgers, home made comfort dishes, nightly specials and then a full sushi menu. I came with my company, so we all got to enjoy a little bit of everything. For apps, I highly recommend the poppers. Simply delicious we preferred two orders! We also got the Jerusalem platter which is a great sharing dish served with fresh pita breads. As far as dishes we all ordered different items off the menu. I highly recommend the schnitzel and the Branzino fish. The presentation alone is shocking! The schnitzel taste just like they make it in Israel! If your feeling for something more simple the burgers are also great and he French fries are hand cut. The service is great and everyone is warm and friendly. We came here after the Israel parade, and this place was packed! We sat at the sushi bar since it was the only empty place when we came in. Two friends and I ordered the tuna combo, which is three sushi rolls, and the white tuna roll. The sushi was delicious! The waiter was so kind even though he seemed stressed with the packed house. I know I'm going to regret this because all the fence straddler types who havent "Hit 18" yet are going to read this, get the references and get this place on their "go to" list and there goes my hope of coming in on the spur of the moment to enjoy what has to be the best hot open turkey/brisket platter I've had since back in the day when Malman's ruled the Catskills and served as a solid stand-in that saved us the trip to Shmulks...and now back to '18' and 2019...our server called it 'comfort food" but that's an understatement...aside from the magically melt in your mouth stack of brisket & turkey topped with the perfect amount of gravy (some of these places tend to slather on gravy by the bucket to the point where it goes through the meat, the plate, the tablecloth...) 18's approach to gravy was like their approach to everything else--tasteful, authentic and done just right --their gravy was the real thing...not the overseasoned, super salty reconstituted glop most places serve up before turning their back on you...and as man does not live by hot open brisket alone, you'll be happy to know the burgers are every bit as impressive--we ordered medium rare and thats precisely what we got (gives a whole meaning to 'tickled pink'!)...the burger was formed to the perfect thickness...which ensured it'd be served juciness intact...and it definitely it was...I can't say for sure if the patty was seasoned or not, but it definitely WASN'T one of those glorified pre-fab, hockey pucks most places try and pass off as "gourmet" these days. Even the fries, smashed potatos & string beans teriyaki were all amazing --the kind of sides that make it clear this place takes their sides seriously (the fries had that hand cut flash fried fresh potato taste that reminds me of the delis of my youth...with apologies to Malmans whose fries were those meh frozen crinkle cut ones) As I'm working in reverse, it's now appetizer time; The chefs special --a boureka type pastry filled with a chicken based filling seasoned with a Moroccan blend of spices and dusted with a magical powdered sugar was so inspiredly amazing I regretted playing it safe and ordering the chumus/falafel combo even tho it was the best chumus I've had in a while...it had the perfect balance of creamy and chunky so you knew it was either made fresh in house or sourced from one of the growing number of small batch/artisanal kosher wholesalers+suppliers that refuse to sell "civilian quantities"...to anyone... (protectsia is apparently dead in kosher artisinal wholesaling)...tho as I'm kosher & hence jewish, finding something to kvetch about is in my DNA...so here it goes...the falafel balls that came with the chumus platter were a bit too crunchy--to the point of being actually hard to chew...I prefer my falafel lightly crunchy on the outside and fluffier on the inside...but that's just me...as my wife and the couple we were with really enjoyed the falafel and as we all enjoyed our food and the exceptionally knowledgeable (yet never cloying) service and as the bill was closer to Monsey than Manhattan...all I have to say is 18 is the kind of kosher culinary 'life' line Manhattan could definitely use more of...now if they only had Malman's recipe for cherry lime rickeys read more

Went here for my husbands birthday with another couple. We get there and the restaurant is small but nice. We ordered A burger, it was very mediocre and the kings platter thats supposed to serve 3 people for $185. (Its supposed to have 3 beef slider, rib steak, lamb chop, chicken breast, beef kebab, Romanian kebab and chicken kebab.) The kings platter was VERY VERY disappointing and for the amount of meat that was actually on the plate it shouldn't have cost more than $50. First off when we ordered the waitress said they didn't have lamb chops, where like ok can we replace it with something else, she rudely said no. We said can we get a discount then, she said absolutely NOT, she was super rude, and very unfriendly, never had a smile on her face for one second. She leaves to speak to the cook and comes back and then said ok we do have lamb chops, we are like ok great and order that. The food arrives and let me tell you, it fed 1.5 people. The lamb chops were tiny, literally the size of my pinky with no meat on it. The steak was 1 rib steak, without the bone and they just cut the 1 steak into 3 tiny pieces. The same with the chicken breast. they just took 1 chicken breast and cut it into 3 tiny pieces (so they say it should serve 3 people) they should be ashamed of themselves! The waitress was rude and didn't care at all. It would have been cheaper to just order 3 Rib steaks and it would have had so much more meat on it then what was on the "kings platter" then it said on the menu that it comes with 2 side dishes. She named us all the sides that come with it we got truffle mash and french fries. When we got the bill she charged us an extra $2 for the truffle mash!!!! we asked why she's like oh that cost more money. We are like why didn't you tell us when you listed the sides it comes with we would have just ordered regular mashed potatoes, she just rolled her eyes and didn't care and we were forced to pay for it. worst service, bad food, and liars!! One thing to note was that when I first called to make a reservation, the person put me on hold and then hung up. I called again and they told me to wait but some how got disconnected. I figured the person was busy and just called again and no issues on the 3rd call. I ordered the Tex Mex burger with fries on the side. I didn't get a chance to try the other dishes. The food looked great when it came. I was disappointed in the amount of fries that were given, especially if you're ordering a side dish of fries for $7. I had ordered the burger medium rare and it came exactly that. I was surprised by the consistent cooking of the meat throughout. The buns were toasted which was nice. Nothing really special about the burger, toppings, or sauce. They added a jalapeno slice to make it the "tex mex" part I guess. It was spicy but flavors weren't there. Especially if you're charging more than the $12-15 burger, you better make the effort to stand out. A lot of burger places are doing the $15 burger thing but at those places, they really make an effort to elevate the burger. Not all those places are excellent, but there are some exceptional ones. Give that this place isn't one of those "specialty" places, I can somewhat understand but if you are going to charge that much, it better show on the plate. The service was fine. I wasn't expecting superb service. The run of the mill service is what you can expect here. It doesn't seem like the place gets busy so the amount of staff here felt appropriate. Overall, the restaurant is clean and fairly spacious. Service was good. Food needs quite a bit of work for the price point they are charging.
