Well, when your flight is delayed over an hour, of course you're gonna want to find a restaurant to grab a light bite to get away from the swarms of upset people at the gate. Too bad this restaurant doesn't provide any better of an environment. Having 1-2 workers in the front means tables are left dirty and unbussed for long periods of time and slow service. The bartender was nice and quick, but there is only so much 1 person can do with a full restaurant. There's only breakfast available in the morning, and there are only 4 choices. I had a bagel and fruit with a drink on the side. It got me fueled up for my trip, which was the point, but man it was a pretty sad meal. Please, even choose Starbucks over this place, as this place is so bad it'll make you long for a pre-packaged sandwich like never before. THIS is their $16 "wedge salad". From submitting the order to having it on the table was ~2 minutes and the chicken had steam coming off it, clearly showing it was "throw the chicken in the microwave to reheat for 90 seconds". I should have immediately sent it back but I'm a fool who's too nice. Below is how it was served vs what I sent back. Service great, food not so great. We were waiting for our Jetblue flight and there isn't much in this terminal so here we were. Self seating as the place was pretty empty. Variety of entertainment on the television for us to enjoy. We started with soft drinks and waters. Bartender/server was really on it given that it got busier as we sat there. We started with the pretzel which was big enough for 6 of us to share 2 easily. It came with mustard and cheese sauce. It was decent enough. For food, I got the turkey avocado sandwich, husband got the hot dog, others got the chicken caeser salad. There was a mixup with one of th salads but it was corrected pretty quickly. If you're waiting for a flight at Oakland Airport, I guess there are worse ways to spend your time. Eight Bar isn't the sexiest bar/restaurant, but it gets the job done. They offer a nice selection of spirits for your boozy pleasure, and the bartender pours with a heavy hand. Be warned, because it's in an airport, you'll be paying more than you normally would for your cocktail. They also offer food - everything from Pretzels to Quesadillas. I didn't try anything, but the dishes that came out of the kitchen looked pretty good. My friend and I were waiting to board our flight and decided that we had time to kill so we stopped in for a beer. Well we originally wanted JUST a beer, but our waitress informed us about a special where we could get a shot for $5 with purchase of a beer. Eh why not? Chill place to come and drag your luggage while enjoying an ice cold beverage. During the time we were here, it was decently late in the evening. So my flight was delayed several times ,and a fellow traveler and my self decided we would split a bottle of wine. I put in some money and she used her card. The server was a male , and told the other co worker ,look they are using a card and money. As to make fun of us. Then he said you know, you have to drink it here , you cant take it with you. Ok you're correct ,do i look like someone who would walk around drinking . He was irritated and sat the bottle down didnt open or serve us turned and walked away. A female server come and opened and poured. I've never seen such horrible service, from anyone. Rude ,arrogance and just not looking like hes enjoying his job. Nice little bar area in the Delta terminal at OAK. The night I was visiting the taps were down for some reason and we were stuck with cocktails or bottled beer. Bottled selection (and honestly tap selection) wasn't great and over priced. That's what you get for airport beer! The staff was friendly. They pushed shot and drink specials which I appreciated but didn't use. They were extremely apologetic about the tap situation but hey, that isn't their fault. There was only one server at the time, but within minutes this place filled up fast. Poor guy was the only one there trying to serve about 20 people. Service was slow because of this, but our server kept a positive attitude the whole way through! Shout out to him! The table went with mimosas and bloody mary's, each were about $15 (yes $15!!!) I didn't mind the price because the mimosa was a decent size and came with a little extra champagne. The food was good, the menu had a few breakfast selections like a breakfast wrap, breakfast sandwich, and bagel with cream cheese. The table tried the breakfast wrap and breakfast sandwich. The breakfast wrap was more like a burrito and had a delicious avocado green sauce on top. The breakfast sandwich was pretty basic with just a fried egg and ham. Both dishes came with a decent sized side of fruit. Was this the best meal? No. Was this the cheapest meal? No. But the service was wonderful and the food and drinks did the job. A slippery slope has started today a Yelp reviewer tomorrow a critic for The Guardian thanks 8 bar for beginning the end of me. Terrible service at the bar. I just asked the lady at the bar if she could fill up my water bottle. She puts her finger up at me as she's walking away and says she busy come back later. I wait a good 7 minutes before she comes back to me. It really doesn't take that long to fill up a glass of water, she could have served me in a second and I always leave a tip when I ask for only a water at the bar. The presentation of this place is typical, high tables, nice bars, and a lot of TVs. Lisa was my bartender and I asked her to make me a Henny sidecar, she checked to see if they had the ingredients and she whipped it up. The drink was the best one I ever had!!! I lounge at 8 bar way too much (i.e. I'm at OAK airport frequently). Good news - this place is behind the security gates - protecting it from the general public. Why do I dislike so much? They are almost always out of Sushi. Two out of 10 times I think they have any in stock. But not to worry, weather at OAK is usually great so your flight out of here will likely not be delayed, reducing the temptation to sit at 8 Bar and consume overpriced watered down drinks without any Sushi for absorption. OAK terminal 1 is dreadful for food & drink. But I refuse to fly SWA so I accept the suffering. read more

Stopped in on Friday January 13th, 2012 - while waiting for a flight. Bar had a nice setup with a large tv showing either sports or news with DirectTv. As I sat down and was immediately greeted by Stephanie the bartender who was quite jovial especially for an airport bartender. Ordered a large 20oz beer along with a $4 side car shot from the gold menu - Jameson. Wren, another bartender also followed up as well to make sure I was being taken care of. Jazzy, was spot on with the sushi - even though there was quite a limited list left at 6 to 7:30 PM. The Nigiri Sampler for $14 along with the Salad for $8 was spot on. For all of the traveling and airport dining that I do, this might be one of the better places I have been to so far at a US Airport. read more

Thanksgiving morning. 9:30am. My plane is delayed one hour. Maybe a drink will lift my spirits. Only a few souls in the bar at that hour. So I sit down and ask the bartender, a middle aged woman with squarish black glasses and straight black hair, for a bloody mary. She rattles off something about a double shot of Smirnoff and asks me if that's OK. I ask her what the price difference is (for the double shot), at which she casually throws the laminated menu at me, saying something like "here's the menu." I look at the menu and am still a bit confused, so, a few minutes later, I get her attention and ask her politely about the price differences for different versions of a bloody mary. She tells me that a single shot is 8 and a double shot is 12 dollars. I order the single shot. She gives me the drink (in a 16 oz glass with a stalk of celery) and I ask to pay. Tastes good, nice and spicy. When she gives me the receipt I see that she has charged me for a double shot. I say something like, "sorry, but I ordered the single", she swoops down on the drink and snatches it away from me. If she had snatched it away just a tiny bit faster, bloody mary would have gone flying all over the place. From this point on, things just degenerated, with the bartender becoming over-the-top passive-aggressive and sarcastic, giving a huge insincere smile while saying what she thought needed to be said, including something or other about her being glad that I wasn't on her side of the bar (which didn't make sense to me). She then served me a bloody mary in a tiny glass (a short glass in which one would expect to see a whiskey on the rocks). What was interesting was that she then went out of her way to answer the next customer's question (which was very similar to mine) in great detail. Perhaps she learned something from her experience with me. One can hope. read more

Silver Dragon across the way for some quick Kung Pao chicken and maybe just a beer at Chili's? Meh. But what choice do I have? I did kinda dig the community tables they had set up. If you're one of those people open to socializing with other travelers at the airport, that works out pretty well to plop down and say hi to the person across from you. You get some crazies traveling through here and may hear some interesting stories or some bitching about the sushi or watered down drinks. read more

We went here pre-flight home from the Bay area. It was close to our gate (#15) and that was the reason we chose it over Chili's. (Typically Chili's is decent airport food, but we wanted to be able to see the gate.) LOCATION/AMBIANCE: In the terminal at Oakland airport, you'd really only end up here while waiting for a flight. Everyone is pretty much waiting for a flight, but no one seemed to stoked on being at this particular location. SERVICE: Meh. The woman, Ren, would ask us a question and then serve someone else while I was answering. Kind of bizarre. Didn't smile at us once, but she did get a laugh with another patron about something. FOOD/DRINK: We had a roll (New Yorker), which was decent. They had a list of decent beers on tap; the one I ordered wasn't available, but they had another not on the list that I do like (Hoegarden) and that worked out for me. Bottom Line - We ate here b/c we had limited choices. If/when back at this airport terminal, I'm way more likely to try some other food/drink choice. read more

My real beef here would be with the management who somehow only scheduled one bartender (she was also the server to the tables) when there was about 30 people in the place. I don't know her name but she was absolutely amazing. Somehow she managed to stay super positive with everyone while she was completely swamped with the amount of people here. Here's the thing - this is an airport bar which experiences normal ebbs and flows based on flights. There were no major delays in or out of the airport this day, so why was this poor employee so understaffed? The schedule should've accounted for he amount of travelers looking for a drink. I think everyone should work at a restaurant at least once in their life to have empathy for the people who you probably interact with on a pretty regular basis. As a past server, I would been enraged at my management for putting me in this situation, but this bartender deserves an award for her great attitude and timely service. I didn't drink here, so I can't attest to the bar end, however I did try out a couple of the sushi dishes. The service is what kept the stars higher than one. The server was nice, although distracted by the guys at the bar. The sushi however was premade and practically inedible. If I hadn't forked over the money and was in need of something to eat before a long flight, I would have left it. The rice was cold and hard, the balls of rice under the nigiri could have been used as rocks. The fish was miscut and lacked flavor. The veggie sushi included underripe vegetables. There is a little bit of tack that you have to use when eating at an airport. It's generally accepted knowledge that it's overpriced and under delivered. With that in mind, I didn't do my due diligence in flushing out the food (i.e. YELP) when arriving at the airport 3 hours before my flight (to save my company money no less!). I landed here for a late lunch, craving sushi at this most inopportune time. ...So why the 4 Stars, you ask? Great question. Let's address what was lacking, and then I will address why I still decided to give them an average booster of a 4 Star. The first thing any sane person would do is check out occupancy. This should be your first indicator of whether food and service are palatable. Considering it was midday, I gave this bar a free pass despite having just a few people at the bar. Second indicator is whether or not people are eating the food. This should have been my red flag, as the only people here were the people sitting at the bar, and the bartender. I still somehow managed to overlook this, because the sushi craving was too strong. The last and final indicator was food prep. Considering there was ONLY the bartender, then who the heck would make my sushi? That my dear Yelp friends was my downfall. Of course, the last shift made my sushi, and probably the night before, considering how COLD and HARD my nigiri rice came out. I could tell before my server/bartender put the plate down, that I had made the biggest mistake any seasoned Yelper could do. So the sushi, ugh the sushi, was probably at best, the quality of 99 Ranch Market's end of the day 1/2 off sushi specials. For the price 8 Bar charged, I was crying for the Silver Dragon Chinese point-and-order place across the aisle from me. Luckily, I ordered a side of avocado and cumber rolls that somehow managed to survive the refrigeration (or perhaps it defrosted better?) and managed to have rice that I could actual consume. I left the balls of rock - I mean rice - and ate my weird cuts of fish, eel and shrimp with the avo-cu rolls. The plus side was the fountain iced tea tasted good and came with refills. So despite my terrible gastronomy challenge in which I failed, the saving grace was the most friendly and attentive server/bartender that I have ever met in an airport restaurant, and possibly anywhere. Stephanie was nice, sincere, and looked like she could mix a great drink (although I don't usually enjoy my revelries before 4pm, with few exceptions). This is why I believe a four star is due. Someone like her should be working for the finest 2- or 3- Michelin star restaurant, and though I'm not glad I ate the food, I feel like she has re-energized my capacity to be nice. I couldn't even comment on how terrible the sushi was, and this I usually do without batting an eye. Lastly, I think the four star (Yay, I'm a fan!) is a pretty accurate assessment of my experience here. Now I may never order sushi from 8 Bar ever again, I certainly wouldn't mind grabbing a drink from here. I am a fan of Stephanie, and I definitely think people should give her a chance at least to brighten their day and become a Stephanie fan. I may give 8 Bar a another chance at food, perhaps when the chef's in during dinner hours and I can see him making my sushi. We'll see. I'm just glad to have made the detour. read more
