We were greeted by the museum director, who was well dressed in a 3-piece suit looking exactly as a museum director should look. He gave us a quick run down of the different exhibit areas as shown on the provided map, and rattled off so many historic tidbits before we even got started exploring. Antique vehicles of all kinds, a whole "flight" exhibit featuring of course those Ohio favorite sons, the Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong. Incredible photos, unexpected memorabilia such as Orville Wright's top hat! A recreated "village green" with all the little shops one would see in 19th century Warren County. I think my favorite part was the maritime collection. Artwork throughout, ranging from ancient oriental to modern local. Some of the century-old sculptures in the Americana section were just breathtaking. The Shaker exhibit was fascinating. Amazing to learn what they innovated - things like vegetable seeds available in SMALL packets - and flat bottomed brooms. Can you imagine trying to sweep a floor with a broom that has a round bottom? We have the Shakers to thank. The kindly and soft-spoken Director caught up with us on the top floor to advise it was five minutes till lights out for the day. We were there well over an hour and the time flew. Hope to get back again this year a little earlier in the day so we can make sure we see every single thing. I definitely recommend a visit to this museum as part of any outing in the Lebanon area.

Got a ticket on Groupon for $9.00 and decided to check out the Reds HOF. Very cool museum!…read more Although not a Reds fan, (Go Cardinals!), I love baseball and the history of it. The Reds HOF is pretty on point. I was impressed. They have tons of game used materials, cool statues, interactive displays etc. The coolest thing IMO were the cases of baseball cards. They had every team set of Reds going back to the tobacco card years in these big pull out display cases. I thought that was very cool. I got some pictures of some Eric Davis gear for my buddy, and spent about an hour inside the HOF (You can spend longer, for sure). Definitely worth a visit, and especially with the Groupon for $9.00. Great deal and a must stop if you are going to a Reds game or are in the area.

During the years I lived near Cincinnati Pete Rose was at the top of his game. I was very sad to hear about his death. At that time I said I bet he'll get into the Baseball Hall of Fame now! Well at least due to the Hall of Fame rules change he's finally eligible to be inducted. In Florida I have been to his restaurant lots of times. It's a mini shrine to his memory. I'm a believer in forgiveness of his mistakes and letting his physical athletic performance be the determining factor in his admittance to the Hall of Fame! So there it is.....I'm glad Pete Rose lived a long life. I should be so fortunate.

As part of my cousin's bachelor party this past Saturday we spent the better part of the afternoon…read moredown at River Downs to take in some horse racing. This was actually my first time at River Downs, though I have been to Turfway once before. There is no entry fee and there are no employees at the gates checking bags, so entry is perfectly painless. Our group arrived on a school bus, taking the long way to get there, so we missed the first race of the day. I sat out betting on the second race and eventually placed a trifecta bet on the third race after finding the ATM. I didn't win this time, and that trend continued for the fourth and fifth races too. We spent the majority of the time hanging out near the rail on the paved standing area in front of the open air grandstand. Beers were just $4.50, which is much better than most other sporting events. And since they didn't check anyone coming in, I wonder if some patrons didn't sneak in some of their own beer in the multiple coolers that I saw throughout the day. My luck changed during the sixth race of the day. After coming close to winning on one of the earlier races, and paying attention to what my program was saying versus the results of the day, I started catching on. Or at least I thought I was starting to understand it all. Most of my bets were either trifecta bets, or I would occasionally pick one horse to win, place, or show, as I did in the sixth race. In my program the #6 horse was listed as 10-1 odds to win, and a couple of minutes before post the large board in the infield displayed the odds as much higher, over 20-1. Once I saw this I ran to one of the automated machines and bought the ticket above. I thought that maybe there was something that I wasn't picking up on that lowered the odds, but I figured it was worth a few bucks to find out. As the race started horse #6 was nowhere near the front of the back. The board only updates for the first 3/4 of the race at best, so as the horses all come toward the finish line it is really hard to tell who is in the lead. As this race came to a close I watched as #6 charged up the inside rail and won the race! I had won $124.80! With just two races after that, I made a couple of bucks off the seventh race and was then put in charge of making a bet for my dad, brother, and I who pooled some money together. Again I went with the win place show bet, and nearly won again as the horse I selected finished in fourth place. Bummer. We had a great time and I look forward to going down to the track again in the future. Kim has already said that she wants to go too.

From the start knock down your expectations a few pegs and then knock them down a few more for good…read moremeasure, this isn't Keeneland, Churchill Downs or even like the race parks you've seen in movies (most recently Bounty Hunter comes to mind), this is River Downs. It is an older facility with little updating and that's what I find so charming, that it looks similar to what it did when my grandparents took us as kids (don't judge). If you've never bet on the ponies, this is a good place to start with free parking, free admission, $2 for your race book, $2 bets and the option to bring your own picnic lunch. I cannot comment on the concessions because it is there's an option to bring my own food, I'm on it (for nutritional reasons). Not a gambler? Then the people watching is sure to delight, you will see clientele you've never laid eyes on at other entertainment venues, but it takes all types to populate Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, right?! We find something for the whole family at River Downs, pony rides for kids and the ability to get down on the rail during live racing. Shade and tables for the older family members to sit and eat a picnic lunch (no alcohol or glass can be brought in) between races while studying the race book. It's an annual summer trip for us!

We had a terrific visit to the Tri State Warbird Museum! We found out about it on our pursuit of…read morethe Aviation Trail, and, when we found ourselves in the area, decided to check it out. It's back near a small airport in a building with a great airplane mural on it painted by one of the volunteers. When we got inside, we were immediately greeted by a friendly group of staff/volunteers in bright yellow shirts. After we purchased our tickets, they brought us into see an overview film on the museum, which was about 15 minutes long. It was very informative. We then met our tour guide, Jim, who was extremely knowledgeable about their plane collection. They have 2 hangars filled with a collection of planes, and they also provide space for owners of historic vehicles to keep their cars onsite. There is also a workspace between the two hangars, because, not only do they display the historic planes, they also restore, maintain, and fly them. We got to take a look at the pieces of their current project. Jim told us all about each plane and did a great job customizing the tour too. I think he probably could have told us more if we had asked, but, as it was, it was easily a 90 minute tour, which was so nice. We got everything from information about the basic mechanics (and how different planes had improvements based on previous ones), how their abilities and timing of creation and delivery played into the success of the war, and even fun stories like how one of the planes was requested to star in a movie. The film repainted it to make it look like it was actively in battle, and it was amazing to see that bit of movie magic. Afterwards, another volunteer, Dennis, was kind enough to take the kid in our party around and let him sit in a plane and a Jeep, and also demonstrated how an engine they had out would run. We really appreciated the friendliness of the staff/volunteers! There were also some small displays available around, including a big collection of model planes and information about the mapping maidens. There's a small paved parking lot. They also offer special events periodically that are available on the website. This is well worth a visit!

Another great area destination for aviation buffs (and their trusty sidekicks!!) We took about a…read more1.5 hr. trip down from Springfield to visit the museum, and met up with some friends who live in the area. Nice facility, interesting exhibits, and some fun-sounding special events. We arrived just as a group was getting to take off on a rescheduled (due to weather) vintage plane flight, and the take off and landing really was a sight to see. You can take an organized tour (which I think we probably SHOULD have done) or walk through the exhibits on your own. The Mr. was happy to browse, and especially excited to learn that they're just beginning a restoration project on his favorite plane, a Corsair. Lots to see, and some really interesting history to learn here. My only "gripe" is their very limited hours, especially considering they're only open two days per week. I'm sure we'll be back to check on the progress of the Corsair, and will keep an eye on their informative website for future special events....
