We were on vacation with a sick 2-year old daughter. Our pediatrician at home (who we had called…read moreperiodically) finally asked that we take our daughter into an acute/urgent care center to be looked at. For a variety of reasons, we chose to go to the local hospital (Incline Village Community Hospital -- separate review to come). It was at the hospital that we met Dr. Higgins. This review is less about Dr. Higgins' competence with the subject of out visit (it was excellent) and more about how she treated us and our daughter. First, Dr. Higgins was extremely slow and gentle with our daughter. During her very through examination of our 2-year old (which involved lots of abdominal probing), our 2-year old never backed away or cried. Dr. Higgins found us in the exam room with our daughter on my shoulder and rather than force my daughter to move to the exam table, Dr. Higgins conducted as much of the exam as possible with our daughter on my shoulder. Most importantly, however, Dr. Higgins constantly told my daughter WHAT she was about to do and then waited until that statement registered with my daughter -- it was almost like D. Higgins was "asking permission" from my daughter for each poke and prod. Next, and equally important, was how Dr. Higgins treated my wife and me. First, some background to give context to this part of this review. My family is -- well -- not mainstream. Our daughter was a midwife assisted home-birth and has not been subjected to the full-array of immunizations. In addition, in a recent doctor's visit for ear pain (with a doctor that was substituting for our normal pediatrician), antibiotics were prescribed for what this stand-in doctor said "might" be an ear infection -- we never administered those antibiotics (and the pain disappeared the next day -- antibiotics weren't needed). As you can tell, my wife and I do not blindly follow traditional western medicine and thus, needless to say, we are a "challenge" to traditional western medical professionals. Nevertheless, Dr. Higgins took each "nonstandard answer" with grace and equanimity. Please understand that my wife and I are NOT used to mainstream doctors reacting with anything other than condescension and judgment. In stark contrast, Dr. Higgins was wonderful with us -- clearly working outside her comfort zone and expanding her exam to include lots of possibilities that are typically ruled out in fully immunized kids. Second, my wife and I are -- some would say -- over-educated. And as a result, we ask LOTS of quesions. Dr. Higgins seemed not just tolerant of the questions but genuinely pleased that we were so interested in each minute detail of the possible medical problems, their diagnostic indicators / counter-indicators, treatments, and risks. I could go on, but I'll leave this review here. Dr. Higgins gets 5 stars in our book.

We had a very concerning experience with Carolyn while scheduling a pediatric appointment for our…read moredaughter. During a phone call to verify insurance, the staff member began asking questions about our family structure that were irrelevant and inappropriate. My partner and I are a same-sex couple and our daughter was conceived through IVF. Despite explaining this, the staff member repeatedly asked who the "biological mom" was, referred to one of us as a "step mom," and asked where the "biological dad" was. Our daughter has two mothers. There is no father involved. She is insured through one of her mothers' employer-sponsored health plan, which should have been the only information needed to confirm coverage. Instead of simply verifying insurance, the conversation turned into questioning the legitimacy of our family. This was uncomfortable, unnecessary, and frankly unacceptable in a pediatric healthcare setting. Families come in many forms, and medical offices should be equipped to interact respectfully with all of them. At minimum, staff should understand that children can have two mothers and that insurance verification does not require probing questions about a "biological father." I hope the practice leadership reviews this interaction and provides staff with better training so that other families--especially LGBTQ+ parents--do not have the same experience when trying to access care for their child.

We love the home away from home feeling from the office and location itself, next to the river and one of our favorite parks. Everyone is always so gentle, from sick visits to shots and physicals. My daughter had developed some doctor anxiety around 18 months but it quickly subsided by her 2 year old check up when she wore her Elsa costume and got complimented and hyped up by nurses and the doctor. She loves doctors now! I love that we can call for a same-day sick appointment, and I love that there seems to be no dumb questions. I feel heard with any concerns I have for my children, and I feel valued as a parent trying to do my best. Any referrals we have needed or asked about have been responded to promptly. You can relax in this office, and rest assured that your babies are in the absolute best hands. Truly the best pediatrician office in Northern Nevada, hands down. (Also, the froggies are a huge bonus.)

We have had nothing but good experiences for the first year of our child's life! All of the doctors are super kind and knowledgeable. Never rush us or make us feel stupid for asking all those first time parent questions. We typically see Dr rotem and she quite honestly changed our life. When we came in for our 9 month appointment she asked us how we were sleeping - and honestly we weren't! Our son had terrible sleeping habits and Dr rotem spent extra time at our appointment helping us with suggestions we should do to help. After that day, our lives were so much better and we actually got our son to sleep! Love this practice and all the staff!
