Now I have to admit, when my butcher recommended their "crispy steak," the idea of a fried steak was NOT particularly appealing to me. But I decided to give it a try anyway, and I was pleasantly surprised! The prime New York steak is only lightly dusted with water chestnut flour, so it's not heavily battered or greasy at all. It just gives the outside a gentle crisp while the steak itself stays perfectly tender. It's thinly sliced and served with sautéed peppers, onions and cabbage in a garlic, soy and burgundy wine sauce. Really, really good! I ordered mine to go, and I have to mention their packaging because I don't know WHAT kind of magic they're doing with these containers, but my food is always still super hot after the 10-minute drive home. Not warm--HOT, like it just came off the stove. I definitely appreciate that with takeout. While I was waiting for my order, I also took some time to admire the many awards displayed throughout the restaurant. Rainbow Palace is clearly an award-winning restaurant, and judging by that collection, they've been collecting accolades for YEARS! The Crispy Steak does cost a pretty penny, so this isn't exactly your inexpensive neighborhood Chinese takeout. But the quality of the ingredients, preparation and portion definitely feel a step above your typical takeout spot.
