I only keep coming here for the Wor ton soup. It's delicious and has everything in it. The place is extremely small and has maybe three tables to sit and eat. I wouldn't recommend it though due to the area and the in and out traffic this place has. It's cash only and they don't accept anything over $20 bill. The lady taking orders is very old and I think has a problem hearing or something is off. You must keep up with your ticket with your number, they will give you problems if you lose it (so I over heard). There's a sign up that says once you walk away we are not responsible for giving the wrong change. Now I understand but if this happens so much please put someone in front who is capable of handling money with less mess ups. The elder counted the money 5 times before she handed it to me and still had the face of unsure. Lots of people waiting around inside and outside. I ordered food there my ribs were over seasoned, I asked for shrimp fried rice, Mongolian beef, egg rolls, mix veggies separately and she totally did the opposite. My egg rolls were oily and she gave me Mongolian with rice. I called back to tell her my order was not right and she screamed at me like I just didn't spend 70 bucks. It's official. This is MY FAVORITE CHINESE FOOD SPOT. I went back again for one of my lunch breaks and have enjoyed the food as much as I did before, maybe even more. The food was made fresh with high quality ingredients, exactly how I like it. (I'm very picky and LOVE food, so I KNOW what quality is and isn't) The lady at the counter told me they've been opened for over 30+ years and I can understand why, THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS! I brought some back to work, but then everyone ate all the rest of my food!!! RATING: 6 STARS! (: However, as I go on Yelp to update my review, it's sad to see people complain about the place. I have no clue how this place has four and a half stars. I thought it would be worth going into the ghetto for this apparently "best Chinese food" ever. Theres bullet holes in the window and I was begged for change while waiting for my food. It was very difficult to order, the menu was not clear and was hard to decipher. I ordered a combination plate of sweet and sour pork and mongolian beef over rice. The waiting time was slightly above average but we thought it was okay because we thought we were going to have the "best Chinese food" ever. When we got the food it smelled like tacos. That was the first warning sign. When I opened my plate I had ordered beef chowmein but was given chicken chowmein. The combination consisted of two entrees so instead I asked for double sweet and sour pork. To my dismay I only got a single entree which was already small. The mongolian beef did not appeal to any of my senses. It did not look good, taste good. The drive to the ghetto just to get overpriced, mediocre food was not worth it. read more

One of my friends recommended this place and I was skeptical at 1st because I've had some bad experiences with Chinese food, but BABY....this was hands down this best Chinese food I've ever had!! They make the food to order, which is one of the reasons I think they stand out. I ordered the shrimp chow main and it was sooo delicious I didnt even have to douse it in soy sauce. I love ERK, I've been eating it since I was a child, and my mother, who is 51, has been eating at ERK since she was 18! However, as I become more health conscious, I have to wonder about where they get their meat from and how the kitchen/cook/prep areas look in the back. A lot of "black" people don't inquire about things like this because they're simply just focused on the taste, but not me. I absolutely love Egg Roll Kitchen. I've never had bad food, the service comes with a smile, and the chiefs makes everything to my liking. The restaurant is in area they cant control, but SO WHAT!!!! I understand them staying where there known. I COULDNT IMAGINE THEM CLOSING! I say no to pan handlers & go in and get my food. They have been there for a lot of years and everything is still great I moved out of Oakland in 2010 I have yet to find food in Modesto that comes close to Egg Roll Kitchen. Hands down, this place has the best fried rice and chow mein that I've had on the west coast. Seriously, the food here is EXCELLENT. Over the years, I've come to expect that the Chinese food here in the bay area is just OK, which is weird, considering the diversity and the large Chinese population. The best Chinese food I've had (prior to eating here) was in St. Louis. Go figure. Full disclosure, this place is in the 'hood. It's a hole in the wall. The service is not that great. I've even witnessed several altercations between staff and customers before.
