This is a pretty good little vegetarian cafe, situated on a side street in the centre of Liverpool. The food is generally pretty good, but nothing fancy. It's well priced, and the 3 course meal deal of starter, main course, coffee/tea and cake (the carrot cake is amazing) is excellent value at only £8! You would have to be very hungry to manage to finish it all however, as the portions are quite big. Main courses are generally priced around £5, and they normally have vegan options available. They serve breakfast in the mornings (and until late afternoon on sundays) and you can get vegetarian or vegan full breakfasts, pancakes, porridge and other tasty things. The egg is fantastic. It's a proper homemade hippy veggie cafe that you can take a book (or read their massive paper pile) and a fiver and lounge there all afternoon. In the evening it hosts lots of groups wanting to discuss over food. It gets noisy but that adds to the atmosphere, plus you can take your own alcohol in. The servings are a good, hearty size and reasonably priced. Really healthy and tasty- my meat loving friends all think the tandori mushrooms are amazing :) I used to go with my uni mates and lecturer and carried on when I left uni, either on my own or with a crowd. It's a pleaser! Although, if you eat too much the thin, little door and winding stairs can be intimidating. read more

Vegetarian/vegan cafes may not be everyone's cup of tea but the Egg Cafe is a bit different in that the food really fills you up and theres no pretentious atmosphere surrounding the whole experience. I had the spicy veggie burger which came with a whole plate of other food- side salads, bread etc. The quiches are supposed to be really good as well. All the meals cost around the £5 mark or a bit less so you get lots of tasty grub for a cheap price. It's also a bring your own alcohol place so it serves as a cheap place to eat and drink. I love the egg! It's a little hidden gem in the centre of Liverpool and even though I'm not a vegetarian myself, I still keep going back because the food is so delcious and well-priced. My favourite things to get are the soups and the garlic bread with cheese, which is on a huge door-step sized slice of wholemeal bread with garlic butter and gooey cheese ontop. Yum. Their carrot cake is also really, really good, the icing is amazing. It's got a really good atmosphere and whenever I go I always see someone I know! read more

The Egg Cafe has been going for years, i used to go there when it was the acorn gallery in 1983 !! I still go now, the food is excellent, the prices are fair and the ambience is chilled and cosmopolitan. The only down side is the stairs, they are narrow and steep. Great staff, great atmosphere, great food, for veggies and non veggies alike :-) A truly unique dining experience has caused me, Melissa Teece, a self confessed carnivore, who will eat a packet of ham on its own, to truly rethink whether vegetarian food is as boring as I presumed it would be. After all, it is missing the chicken breast, pork or lamb chop that is usually sizzling away on the side of my plate but hey, give everything a go once eh? After ascending the 2 flights of stairs, I was pleasantly surprised, it is very quaint and considering it serves no meat I was banking on it being empty.... Boy was I wrong, it was packed to the rafters and after looking at the menu and most importantly the prices I could see why... Massive portions of great tasting and get this, nutritious food, for less than a fiver, BARGAIN... I ordered the 3 course bargain buster and could barely finish the starter. I chose the soup of the day which on that day was vegetable and cheesy garlic bread and i must say it was superb. All fresh made in the restaurant, not a microwave technician in sight. I followed that up with the tandoori mushrooms and although they were lovely, I began to miss meat at that point the sauce was insanely good but I could have just done with a chicken drumstick.... The pudding there was no chance of me being able to engulf, as by that point i felt ready to explode. It was either the sheer amount of great tasting nosh, or that fact it was the first thing with some actual nutritional content that i had eaten in a while. The were superb and rather than me have it then and waste it they offered to wrap it up so i could take it away and it made for an excellent hangover cure the morning after.... I would definitely recommend The Egg and have been back on several occasions for helpings of their delicious soup and cheesy garlic bread... but I guess I am too much of a carnivore to forgo meat with my main meal.... read more

I love this place for two reasons: 1) Great food. Really great, nutritious, tasty food! 2) It's not pretentious. It's definitely more on the shabby chic side of things, but I like that. The place is adorned with artwork and painted walls. Food portions are huge and every time I've been I've been very happy with the meal. The only reason I didn't give five stars is that the staff are often quite curt. Don't let that put you off though, it's one of my favourite places to eat in the whole of Liverpool. read more

As a pay day treat, I decided to get more acquainted with the specialist vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Liverpool whist I was giving up meat for Lent and paid a visit to a bohemian and eccentric cafe called The Egg which can be found just off of Bold Street and up several sets of red staircases. My first impression of the cafe was that it felt like a really cool and hipster school dining hall with the food several on red trays, long tables and a cutlery station. The staff were very welcoming though I did feel slightly on edge having to read the menu at the counter and make a snap decision order. The menu was sadly extremely limited. I am a person who makes an effort to order a dish when I dine out that I do not have the skill to make or, at the very least, I do not have in my kitchen cupboards. The only item on the menu, in amongst all the cheese on toast, egg on toast and well...toast..., was the spiced veggie burger. For a mere five pounds I was presented with a feast which I left guiltily as it looked almost untouched. There was just so much food and it was actually really really yummy! The Egg is bursting with character, with lovely staff and with great value for money vegetarian and vegan food. I would probably go again for an afternoon snack or for tea and cake on a gorgeous summer day with the ladies but probably not for a meal again. read more

The welcome you get in The Egg is absolutely atrocious. My girlfriend booked a table and diligently went two days before to pay a deposit (what restaurant does that?). When we got there we were a few people down on the numbers because of last minute cancellations. He immediately started having a go at her. And didn't stop. She was already upset because people had cancelled and even when he saw she was crying he still kept going on about the business he'd lost because of the few people he was down. I find The Egg Cafe to be tatty. It's hard to find and the service is apathetic at best. I've heard of other reviews where the manager has ruined peoples' evening. It's a shame that the apparent care they try to apply to animals and the environment in their menu choice and policies doesn't extend to their customers. read more

The Egg Cafe is the ultimate vegetarian/vegan option, with prices under £5 and generous servings. You couldn't get healthier food for a healthier price. A lot of students, artist and musicians go here. Children are welcome but there is a winding staircase and no wheelchair access. There are plenty of long tables so you can drag your carniverous friends along and they'll be able to see what green food tastes like at it's best. There is lots of art on the walls and this place has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. If you're a visiting Ve then you must stop by here. I never visit Liverpool without having 2 square meals here. read more

We stayed in Liverpool on the 20th October and had a fantastic vegetarian meal at The Egg Cafe. The food was excellent, as was the service and the atmosphere. The entrance - up two flights of stairs, quite dark, was a bit strange but we really couldn't fault The Egg Cafe - a truly vegetarian/vegan venue with completely home cooked food. It is not sophisicated but very relaxing. Frequented by all ages, from students to 'older' people like us. read more

I haven't been to The Egg in many years, it used to be my hang out with my older sister when we were in our late teens - early 20's. now in my 30's I was pleased to say my visit there yesterday was fantastic. I sat there reminiscing about the old days whilst listening to Bob Marley and eating what can only be described as the most delicious and satisfying Gluten Free meal I've had since I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease a year ago. The ambiance and the most excellent customer service and friendly staff will have me coming back for more. This is going to becoming my regular eating hole and the value for money is great! Janine Pinion actually founded the Acorn cafe in 1984 which sometime in early 90s was run by two men who then moved and created the Green fish cafe on Upper Newington. I think the Green Fish Cafe is possibly the oldest and longest running vegetarian cafe in Liverpool. Other names I can remember of vegetarian cafes in Liverpool are Carrageen cafe on mytle parade, Food for thought on Hardman street. Cloud nine upstairs at the Bar bar, and also the 2nd green fish which was in the Door Hanover street - what a great loss and I think the LIPA cafe was also vegetarian but changed due to students protests. read more

I tried to like Egg, and I mean I really really tried. Not just because of my vegetarian husband, but also because of the amount of people who rave about it. But let's put it into perspective, in a city where there aren't too many restaurants that cater the hip, organic, veggie community it makes sense that this place is so richly reviewed. However, coming from a community that normally serves tons of veggie options, and perhaps just being a normal consuming human being, the food is just average. It isn't hard to put a piece of pita bread on a plate, chickpeas tossed in bean sprouts and oil and some pasta salad on to a plate and call it a side. If Egg's thing is to be simple, than I can only explain that it is REALLY very simple. I've tried the quiche, the spicy burger and the lasagna and the best thing was the lasagna.... which they only ever have on special occasions. Talk about frustrating when it is hard to get a decent lasagna in Liverpool anyways. If that item was permanently affixed to the menu I would have given it 5/5, but for the do it yourself style cafe that provides extremely simplified menu items that don't even require basic cooking skills - yeah a 3/5 is just right. Great for a small bite to eat, but don't do it to impress your friends. read more
