I'm stuck between a 3 and 4 on this one. Effex is certainly fun if you're with the right crowd and the DJ plays some poppin stuff. I've seen it in its slowest and worst music nights...to its best. So essentially it's a hit or miss. Thursdays... Ehhhh. Upside? No cover. Downside? Not as many people and doesn't have their top DJ usually. Fridays and Saturdays it's free before 10 (who goes out that early? I'm always a late bloomer... so the ten bucks is a given) ...unlessss you wait until 1:20, and then it's free again. I've taken that route a few times. Just enough time to get my dance on for a smidge before closing. It's not that I absolutely can't afford it, but the fact that their drinks are also generally kind of weak and definitely expensive takes the draw away a bit. If the cover ensured cheap drinks too, then by all means I'd pay it. Obviously it's a gay club so for those looking for a mate, I'm sure the money is well worth it. I'm just in it for the drinks and the dancing. My recommendation: go on a busy night where the vibe is exciting, and the $10 won't feel like much of a loss. But also: pregamin' is where it's at, so you don't spend $7 on a wimpy drink. You pay $7 for a Long Island at Anodyne first. Best spent money downtown. :P

Great place. Nice bartenders, cool crowd, cheap drinks, huge club with several dj's. You will enjoy upstairs like the first floor.

To start, I appreciate the TOCK reservation app. It was so easy to go in and modify my original reservation (unlike open table which I find difficult to edit). We five person party did dinner. I LOVE the menu and wanted to try everything. Stephanie our server and cocktail specialist was wonderful. I was able to watch her craft her cocktails with great precision and care. The other staff / management were attentive and also willing to reduce or remove charges for plates that did not work for two of us. Their attention to everything makes me a fan. The lighting and intimate downtown vibe made it the perfect date night spot. The service was attentive and welcoming, and every single thing we ordered was excellent. We started with the pretzel bites and queso dip, which were absolutely addictive -- soft, warm pretzel bites paired perfectly with the creamy queso. For dinner, I ordered the noodle bowl with tofu and fresh vegetables, and it was packed with flavor while still feeling light and fresh. My husband had the burger and fries, and it was cooked perfectly with great flavor and a soft toasted bun. The drinks were also fantastic and complemented the meal perfectly. You can tell the ingredients are fresh! This was our first visit, but definitely not our last. Slate Street Cafe is such a great spot for a relaxed dinner, drinks, or date night downtown. Highly recommend!

Out of everyone in our group, there were definitely others who were actually intoxicated. If they felt that way why didn't they deny her entry? She was our DD. Better security is definitely needed. On the way out, I mentioned to security they need breathalyzers if they're going to kick out people for being "too drunk" when they're full sober. Security told me I was disrespecting them and I could be blacklisted. All in all, this place is extremely homophobic and had no attention to detail. There were plenty of people around us that were screaming and looked obviously more drunk than anyone who didn't get singled out. The bartender targeted her immediately. BS.

After entering, I went directly to the restroom. Within minutes of coming out, security approached me and told me I needed to leave. I was given no clear explanation and security became confrontational. I was initially told I appeared intoxicated, despite having just entered the venue and not ordering a single drink there. When I politely asked for clarification, the only explanation I received was that I had put my hands up while speaking. My boyfriend then attempted to ask for a receipt and a better explanation of what happened. During that interaction, he was pushed by a member of the security staff and was called inappropriate names. Several members of our larger group chose to leave after witnessing the situation. The most frustrating part is that we were allowed to enter, our money was accepted, and then I was removed almost immediately with little to no explanation after being cleared by the first bouncer and the woman who took our payment. Venues have the right to refuse service, but guests deserve to be treated with respect and given a clear reason for being removed. Based on our experience, the security staff was inconsistent, confrontational, and unprofessional. I would not return, be aware!

Not because of the atmosphere. Not because of the location. Because of Katya. Katya is not my favorite bartender. She is my favorite human being. I've spent enough time in bars to know when someone is good at their job. Katya operates on an entirely different level. She can take what feels like sixteen orders at once, remember every single one, deliver them with absolute precision, keep the entire room moving, somehow do the math in her head, and still make every customer feel like they're the only person sitting at the bar. The basement bar itself is exactly what a great dive should be; a shithole. Heavy hobo stab vibes upon entry, including Katya. Smell: multiple buttholes farting at once. Climate control: sweaty patron dependent. Lighting: liability. TV: playing a rotation of trash 80s DVDs . If business schools were smart, they'd study her. If hospitality groups were smart, they'd clone her. If Santa Fe has any sense at all, they'll do whatever it takes to keep her exactly where she is. Cash only, so come prepared. And bring plenty of it, because she deserves every penny. Katya must be protected at all costs.

Brisket: worse I've ever had anywhere, leathery and totally devoid of any moisture (not edible); chicken: again, super dry and no moisture; the ribs: good flavor, but also dry yet at least edible. IMO, in a bbq joint, the bbq should be the star of the show; in this case it wasn't even a supporting player. You simply cannot severely overcooked your main atttactions. Also, this is the first bbq joint I've ever visited that didn't supply bbq sauce at the tables, although there is not enough sauce that could've help slide this dry stuff down.
