Westchester Funeral Home - Rest in Heavenly Peace, Mom-Lo - January 2020

Westchester Funeral Home

Did you know that the Westchester Funeral Home is a historic, family-run funeral parlor owned by…read morethe Benedict family since 1832? It all started in the East Village of Manhattan, then moved north at the turn of the century. The business is currently run by 5th-generation great great great grandson, Alan Benedict, his wife Maria, and their daughter, Carrie Benedict, who run the business with true compassion, taking care of every detail seamlessly. The Benedicts have provided wake, visitation and funeral arrangements for both my husband's and my family over the years. We cannot thank them enough for their kind thoughtfulness, ease, comfort and professionalism during the most difficult of times. God bless.

From the owner: One Of The First Funeral Homes In New York City!…read more In 1832, when our great, great grandfather Samuel Benedict opened his business in Greenwich Village, New York City he called it an undertaking parlor. He started as a church sexton, arranging funerals for members of his congregation. A generation later, America called upon his son, Charles A. Benedict, to arrange the funeral of President Garfield after his assassination in 1881. Charles answered his country's call again, in another time of sorrow, arranging the pallbearers for President Grant's funeral in 1885. Around the turn of the century, our family relocated to Eastchester, preserving to this day our independence as a family-owned funeral home. With a heritage of professional guidance, our company has earned the trust of people from many ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and faiths.

I cannot say enough good things about Flynn Memorial Home on Central Ave in Yonkers. Jim, Mike and the rest of the staff were all wonderful. Their compassion and professionalism made a difficult situation for us managable. My Mom looked beautiful. It was obvious Mom was treated with care and love. Everything went so smoothly from start to finish. We knew some of the procedures as we lost our Dad almost 2 years ago. The way we were assisted back then made our choice of a Memorial Home a very easy decision. There was no question we were going back to Flynn. The men and women at Flynn went above and beyond to help us see our parents will Rest in Peace. We highly recommend Flynn Memorial Home

We were all devastated by her death and needed to make arrangements immediately. Since my parents had the foresight to pre-plan their arrangements, everything went very smoothly. Every detail from the treatment of my mother, the flowers, media setup, Prayer and Thank You cards were first class. The makeup artist was very skilled because my mom had suffered terribly and she had the wounds to prove it. There was no evidence of this when we viewed her. Her makeup and hair matched the photos we sent. They even added earrings because we had forgotten to bring them. We later replaced them with her own. We were all in agreement they could not have done better. The staff was extremely respectful and helpful, keeping things dignified yet personal, not stuffy or stiff. Their coordination with the florist, printers, engravers, the Church, even Bag Pipers took the stress off of us and they delivered on every promise. I would highly recommend you put your loved ones in their capable and helpful hands.

Yannantuono Burr Davis Sharpe... over 2 years ago…read more1 am a hospice nurse and during time of death and pronouncement, try to do a favor for the family in calling for the funeral services especially when the family is elderly, and overwhelmed and does not wish to visit their loved one who passed away at a facility at wee hours in the morning. I had spoken several times to Anthony Guarino, the funeral director of Yannantuono, that now, at this time I would remember his name with a bad memory. This man is very rude, nasty and very impolite, and even threatened me that he will not come out if the family did not call him. What an ego! Instead of asking time of death and medical release number which is necessary, he argues and is condescending to me over the phone and hung up. The nurses at the facility and I was so shocked of his behavior. Funeral directors take down information from hospice nurses and very kindly take charge of the next steps in contacting the deceased family and not yell at the hospice nurse who does the in betweens. If I have a family asking for a referral for a funeral, I shall remember this man who does very poor customer service and poor behavior and never refers to any families anticipating the end of life situation.

Then in 2019 when my uncle passed we went back thinking we'd get the same quality service we received before, boy was I wrong. The moment we walked in we were met by pure ratchetness. Dudes that looked like they belong elsewhere eating wings and a so called funeral director (not the same one I dealt with in 2013) just as ghetto. No tact no empathy. I requested a change of casket since the one my cousin chose wasn't up to par and I was told it couldn't be done bc allegedly the body was already in the casket which I suspect wasn't true. Finally the morning of the burial they were over an hour late to pick him up and go to the cemetery. No reason given just kept telling us they were on the way. Unless this place has changed management and staff in the last 7yrs I would not use this place. I'd rate them no stars but that's not possible.

I was pretty much in shock when I contacted First Avenue Funeral Service in October from another…read morestate to make arrangements for a funeral. From the start they were compassionate, gentle and kind. There was no attempt made to upsell their services. They quickly took possession of my brother before I arrived in New York and it was a comfort to my family that he was no longer in the city morgue while I flew out to NY. They made the entire process of his wake and cremation as simple and gentle as possible. Mr. Lee was the one who prepared my brother for viewing. Mr. Lee is an artistic genius, due to throat cancer my brother did not look as he once did but Mr. Lee worked a miracle and despite the circumstances of his death my brother looked as if he had just settled down for a nap on my sofa. I half expected his ankles to be crossed as was his habit in life. While searching for a funeral home I found out that the one my family traditionally used was having legal issues over quality and was forced to look elsewhere to arrange funeral services. I'd contacted several funeral homes before deciding to go with FAS due to their location and was surprised to find that they were the least expensive out of all the funeral homes I'd contacted. They were budget friendly without being skimpy. Located in an area with several funeral homes, they are small, not so flashy and easily overlooked but they provide wonderful service and are kind and compassionate. I highly recommend them and will use them again should the need arise.
