What started as an awkward query on the price of a funeral for my mom who just passed the evening…read morebefore, turned into an experience I never imagined would be so seamless to get through. I never wanted a viewing because you want to remember your loved ones as they were, but once I saw mom after her passing, I had to allow others to see her one last time. Ralph Cerasuolo, funeral director, invited us into their office and sat us down and asked what was it that we were looking to do. From there, the conversation slowly evolved from pricing a funeral to hobbies and travel and Italy. Ralph made it easy to do what I needed to get done for Mami. While Ralph complied a price list, he let us browse through a prayer book catalog and I was so happy to find Mami's favorite patron saint as one of the selections. It's not a common saint to find and I found Him here at Riverdale Funeral Home. Preparing for this day, a few months ago, I started a photo slideshow project of Mami's life and I wanted to bring a projector with my iPad to the viewing. I was so happy to learn that it wouldn't be needed as Riverdale Funeral Home provides a large flatscreen TV with plenty of HDMI plugs for use with devices to display photos and memories. I was also contemplating in bringing bottled water for visitors but had no time to get a case. No worries again. When I arrived for Mami's viewing, there were plenty of carafes of water throughout the room alongside cone paper cups. Another stress reliever that they supplied these simple amenities. On the day of her viewing, Mami looked absolutely beautiful. One of my worst fears all my life was to see her on a day like this and have that last memory of her not looking like herself but she looked like she was sleeping, completely rested. She had her costume jewelry on, just as she did in life and looked like she was just waiting to head to one of her parties. My heart was filled with so much happiness. I cannot thank Ralph enough for his knowledge and in being the one to assist us with Mami's arrangements. James Winkle, their office manager supervised Mami's visit and he is a dear to engage with as well. The funeral home itself has a very cozy feel with warmth when you walk in. One truly feels they are with family through the process. Riverdale Funeral Home made this sad loss of ours a beautiful memory we will always remember. Thank you for this. Personally I have used their services twice and both times was treated with the upmost respect and professionalism. Gloria goes above and beyond to make sure everything goes smoothly. She makes herself available the minute you meet her. She treats you like family. When my aunt passed I went to Gloria and requested services. I explained it was my first time and needed guidance. She stepped right in and told me what needed to be done made suggestions and everything went smoothly and my aunt looked like an angel. I reviewed condolences and complements. Shortly afterward my mother got sick and I knew I would need Gloria's help again. I went to her and again she greeted me warmly and we were able to set everything up. For every one of the four funerals we have had there, Porta Coeli has handled all of the pertinent aspects. D'Bari was extremely beautiful, clean, and newly decorated. D'Bari Funeral home was the 4th funeral home we called because the funeral by our homes never answered or returned our phone calls but D'Bari Funeral Home answered and instructed us on every format to be done prior to coming to them. One note within 15 minutes of releasing out Mom to the funeral home(D'Bari) they were there professionally dressed and polite(caring) and took her straight to the funeral home. The day of the viewing(one day). It was set up beautifully and Mom looked beautiful and brought tears to us all. The owners, director, drivers and pallbearers formed a circle and did prayers with us before going to the cemetery it was really special, they were all professional. helpful, and caring. Keep in mind that the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak in the Bronx. I understand precaution and maintaining distance, but the funeral director made no prior mention on the phone about their current method of interaction with visitors. To actually put up a notice which states, "No walk-ins", while displaying a disclaimer of the pandemic which so many other essential businesses are doing, would have been sensible in order to notify visitors to not step foot into the funeral home and the reason why. I mean, you can't get more specific than that. Considering the doors are white, it would have been easy to see. But I checked a total of four times and I found nothing. Regardless of the guidelines on the news concerning funeral homes, that didn't change the fact that a notice should've been up outside. Now regarding the price for a cremation, which my mother requested for my father, the amount was almost $3,000. Two words: price gouge. As my mother and I were leaving, a woman, who works there and who had a nasty attitude, blocked the entrance. Like, seriously? This is where a notice would have sufficed so they wouldn't have to create their own little makeshift barricade with two vases and a table. I laughed for a good minute after I saw it. Or perhaps they should have just kept the door closed. Also, they should have kept themselves seated at the window where they talked to their visitors. But personally, I refuse to conduct business and do transactions that way as if it's a walk-up window at a fast food joint. That was our first and last time at this funeral home. If I could give them no stars, I would.

My mom looked natural and not made up. I chose this funeral home because I did not want that big commercial feel. I wanted piece and tranquillity and not multiple viewings like a conveyor belt feel.
