Last year - sadly while on vacation - I experienced terrible pain that radiated from my upper jaw down my neck. I felt very sick. Turned out I needed a root canal! I was a little scared because root canals have such a bad rep, but thankfully I was referred by my dentist to Dr. Gamson. I was seen promptly when I arrived and felt more relaxed in just a few minutes. Dr. Gamson is gifted - finding common interests to distract patients in a charming manner - and at the same time explaining what he is doing and what to expect. Also, it's clear he's a top notch expert when it comes to root canals. I had no pain during the procedure - just a bit of sting with the shots. The root canal immediately addressed the radiating pain. I was so relieved that an experience I expected to be horrible was not - and I enjoyed Dr. Gamson's charming chatter, which distracted me from my fears. The office staff was efficient and helped me understand the insurance coverage situation. Also, the office and treatment rooms have unique art displayed that I enjoyed learning about. Getting to the root of it all. With a true desire for others well being, an interest to figure out what's going on and a genuine joyful disposition Dr. Gamson aims to get to the root of things. The front desk is always very helpful and informative in all aspects of the visit (insurance, scheduling, after care and such). Very professional, communicate clearly and really want to help and have things go smoothly for everyone. All they have done and gone that extra bit to be help is very much appreciated. Dr. Gamson is a true master at his craft and has always strived to make sure things are up to his standers before I leave even if that means making a couple adjustments to things. This to me shows a concern for the long term of his work instead of other place that are like a tooth mill in and out mentality. Dr. Gamson has gone above and beyond to listen to what is going on and really engages himself in the conversation to make sure he has all the information needed to then dip into he experience to implement a plan of action. He works very effectively and efficiently always checking in to make sure one is ok. His precision numbing is amazing and makes sure there is no pain during the visit. Dr Gamsom and his staff were all professional and caring. I needed two root canals and scheduled them a week apart. Of course the novocain shot was a bit unpleasant for a few seconds, but it seemed miraculous that I had no pain during the procedure. in fact, when the work was done on the lower tooth, I asked if we could do the upper tooth and get it all over with. Dr Gamson agreed. I had no significant pain after--at least not enough to decide to take a pain killer. I found the doctor and his assistant charming and gentle, and I was shocked to get a call from Dr Gamson the evening after the morning procedure to see how I was doing. At age 10 I had my front tooth knocked out. Ever since then I panic at the thought of any dental procedure. Now at age 73 and a retired physician I am still scared to have dental work. I recently found I needed a root canal in the partially broken tooth next to the one knocked out at age 10. I was referred to Dr. Gamson. He carefully and thoughtfully evaluated me and proposed a routine root canal instead of a more invasive procedure. Through persistenc, patience, and his EXPERIENCE, he was able to find the root and successfully finish the procedure. I had NO PAIN. He kept me informed and at ease throughout the procedure. As someone who has a lot of anxiety around medical procedures, I was super happy to have gotten recommended to Dr. Gamson for my root canal. After being numbed and prepped, the root canal was pain-free! I get really nervous around loud drilling noises and Dr. Gamson really helped me feel more calm by letting me know when he would be going in with a different tool. He also frequently checked in on if I was feeling any pain, and offered to further numb me if I needed it. I was honestly surprised when he said we were done because of how fast it was. He and the rest of the office do a fantastic job of making your experience here comfortable and easy. Here was my experience in getting a root canal with Dr. Gamson in early 2020: pre-existing crown cracked during procedure. Separated instrument left in the canal during procedure. Canal, per independent endodontic evaluation in 2024, had "torn buccal apices." I absolutely do not recall Dr. Gamson making any mention of the separated instrument to me and I would have taken note of this. He now claims he mentioned it, which is required standard procedure. His message to my dentist was that patient "did very well and understands that follow up restorative care is necessary." Yes: I understood that I would now have to pay for yet another crown. I was not aware of any possible implications of the separated instrument. 2024 evaluation by radiologist found "the treated canal is wide but the filling material is limited to the buccal part of the canal." Bottom line: I paid for another crown assuming procedure had gone well but the root canal failed. Infection returned. I now face expense of extraction and implantation. Things go wrong -- but in this case multiple things went wrong. Dr. Gamson returned the part of his fee that I paid but kept the insurance fee. I face about $5000 in expenses to make this right. And all the time and money already wasted. read more

Turns out the tooth initially identified by Dr. Gamson was not the tooth with the crack and causing the problem. I am easily the worst person to have as a patient for a root canal...I have MAJOR dental anxiety. Dr Gamson and Kaby were wonderful in so many ways. Not only was the root canal done quickly, it was done with no pain, which I truly did not believe could happen based on a previous root canal I had done elsewhere. Dr Gamson and Kaby took the time to make sure I was calm and numb (even though I'm sure I was numb the first try, he very kindly recognized my anxiety and fear before the drill started and numbed me to oblivion, for which I am forever grateful). He talked throughout to take my mind off the procedure (he even sang to the background music a little ) and told me everything he was doing. Kaby is also just so wonderful, kind, and caring. I never thought I would rave about a root canal, but I honestly can't think of a better dr or dental assistant for a patient like me. This is the place to go if you have dental anxiety, trust me. This star is only for his male front desk receptionist. And it might be unfair because another receptionist was very accommodating. However, I feel that I must leave the review due to some unthinkable things that were said in a phone conversation with the receptionist post a recent root canal. I called to ask how long the temporary filling could hold in place as I had difficulty making an appointment with my general dentist. Granted that it was a medical question asked to a receptionist, he offered to answer that it would hold as long as I wanted it to be. Baffled by the response I asked to clarify because it was a temporary filling and the office post op sheet clearly states that I needed to follow up with my dentist soon. He then got flustered and told me three days to see if that made me feel any better. He asked: "does that make it any different?" I got myself together after the exchange and asked to speak with Gamson. He called within five minutes and clarified my answer. As a physician myself, I know good communication is everything. If you didn't know the answer or even didn't want to answer it, then you can always defer it. But choosing to spend your time to be hostile on the phone with made up answers for medical advice (I should have asked for Gamson in the first place) could end up disastrous. The exchange damaged the great impression I had of the clinic after my great surgical experience there. read more

The whole experience is pleasant, and the circumstances leading to a root canal are typically the opposite. Furthermore, he is scrupulously honest, and he knows his stuff - he advised that I did not need two additional root canals and crowns which would have cost me several thousand dollars and which my then-dental practitioner was insisting upon; I found a new dentist and that individual filled those cavities without even needing local anesthetic. Worst office ever, made an appointment a week ago, gave all necessary referral forms, drove an hour, sat 45 minutes to be told they no longer take my insurance. My dentist is outraged!! Gamson was no where present, indicates in response to my review that I mistreated his competent staff, I never yelled or cussed, I broke down crying hysterically, I waited a week in severe pain, if your competent staff would have checked I would not have suffered a week of pain and agony I could have gone elsewhere. I even called 3 days prior to my appointment to make sure your office had the necessary referral. Clear indication of your incompetent staff and no apologies have been made, no alternatives were offered only blaming me for leaving the office. A competent staff checks to make sure insurance is good, would never have let a hysterically crying person in severe pain leave without a solution. You don't care about your patients pain, your staff doesn't care. So let's take some accountability of your failure and inconsiderate staff because now I have to start all over finding a doctor who cares. read more

Naomi has worked with me to ensure that my husband's office visit was covered by his insurance. It was a dedicated effort as she had to make numerous calls. Had it not been for her excellence, i wouldn't have been able to meet the Endodontist. I had been to a few Endodontist where I always had the feeling that they were in the practice for money and not necessarily to take care the patients' teeth. I didn't get that kind of impression from Dr. Gamson, which was refreshing. He was cautious, not leaving any room for errors. He explained everything clearly. This is not what I want to write. I've been dealing with this guy for many years at several locations. Over the last 20 years I have had multiple teeth that needed re-treats what is up with that? He has a very decent bed side manner but I wish I didn't have to deal with multiple extractions and re-treats. I always said there is no real real replacement for experience. Now I realize I was wrong. A new endosontist had a CT scanner, figure that! It found another root that wasn't dealt with all these years and the end of a root that needs to be dealt with yet again. I had a root canal done there today after being referred by Chevy Chase Dental. CCD said that they send their patients to Dr. Gamson because he is excellent at his craft. His office staff, Sandra, was on point with forms and clear communication. Dr. Gamson reached out to me via his cell phone that Wednesday evening after the referral was made to see how I was doing. I was in much pain. The next morning Sandra wrote to say that everything was good to go for Friday, but that they could work me in at noon today, Thursday, a day earlier. When you are in a lot of pain this means a lot. Though never fun, Dr. Gamson made this as pleasant as anyone could have. He was also sensitive to how my antibiotic was handling the infection and seeing that it was not progressing well put me on a stronger one. He even called me tonight to check on me. Who does that? I could see why I was sent there, Dr. Gamson is awesome at what he does. Other noteworthy: Warm soft lighting, very clean throughout including a beautiful restroom, pleasant background music, incredible dental imaging equipment, and plenty of parking. There is a nice descending sidewalk on the left side corner of the buildings which will take you to the office without steps. Thank you! read more

I cannot speak highly enough about Dr. Gamson and his staff. I came in with an infected tooth, and within a few days came back for my first root canal. I was highly agitated and uncomfortable. Dr. Gamson got down to business and moved as quickly as he could--while still making sure I was as comfortable as possible. He was very gentle. His assistant held my hand during the procedure, because I was so nervous. But really, the pain was shockingly minimal. His dental assistant and office assistant were fantastic. Just a little background; I have under gone quite a few root canals and dental procedures in the past. Some of those trips could be attributed to a few factors( infrequent check ups, lack of general dentist, mediocre hygiene) but my family history shows we were never known for our teeth. From a young age, my teeth have always been an issue even with regular maintenance. My teeth have been through a lot. From a multitude of filings to over 4 root canals, I've had my fair share of experiences. Previously, a dentist incorrectly used a filling material and eventually let to severe decay and excruciating pain. The dentist didn't even want to show face when we asked for him to fix the issue. The emergency procedures to fix the previous dentist's mistake didn't turn out much better either. The root canals were painful and messy. I found myself sitting uncomfortably with cotton wads soaking in blood while cringing in pain as the dentist did his best to poke and prod as he worked his black magic. Since then let's just say that I don't harbor fond memories of root canal procedures. Frankly, my teeth were not in the best shape. Needless to say, dentists let alone root canals elicit and evoke painful memories...but I digress.... Off the bat, I can confidently say that Dr. Edward Gamson has almost single handily almost restored my faith in the dental practitioners. His professionalism and practice was light years difference from my previous experiences. My harbored anxiety cock-tailed with my shame was immediately put to rest from the first appointment. We both knew that my teeth weren't in the best shape but Dr. Gamson and his staff made sure to alleviate any stress/ill-feelings from the get go. His demeanor and accommodating nature puts you at peace and makes you already feel better. AND this is before any foreign objects are put in your mouth. I was in absolute awe and borderline bewildered by how painless the whole procedure was. There was no bloody cotton wads or awful tasting fluids but it was literally painless. The brevity of the appointments was amazing. He is that good. My follow up appointment and root canal with him was no different. I am kicking myself for not finding this place sooner! I would absolutely recommend Dr. Gamson and his practice to anyone in need of a endodontic procedures. So, I'll admit. I did use Yelp to find an endodontist especially after my first two consultations left me unsatisfied. And I'm thankful to say that Yelp didn't let me down. Five stars for root canals? As my friend said "this isn't gelato." This office is 5 stars for two reasons, allow me to elaborate: 1. The quality of care. Even my snobby dentist who refered me to my first arrogant endodontist consultations said he did a good job! There was virtually no pain (just soreness) after the procedure which means he did a great job in my eyes too. Dr. Gamson was very calm and explained everything and even drew me a picture of my tooth and what he would do to it. Awesome! I was numb before I even realized what was going on. He called that night to make sure I was doing okay. Even though I slept through the call (naptime), the sentiment was not lost. 2. Value. When I walk into a dentists' (or endodontists') office and i see flat screens nailed to the ceiling and sweeping panoramic views of DC or Cartier (in one instance) and Ipods taped to everything and 3 assistants for every dentist and VALET, I get ANNOYED. why? because these flat screens and views of the Cartier christmas installation are not free, they are on MY BILL. I am more than happy to pay for a root canal when I need it, but I already have a tv at home so I'm good. Dr. Gamson's office has a beautiful view of a wooded lot (yay trees), free parking (normal, drive up, park anywhere you like) and his office wasn't decorated so that it could double as a medspa after hours. It looks like a normal person dentist office. YAY! As a result Dr. Gamson charges HALF, yes half like as in 50% off, what all the other endodontists were charging. In short, you won't be sorry you visit Dr. Gamson. There should be more individuals like him in dental (and medical) field. read more

Some people are blessed with various things: some are natural athletes, or gifted at math and some people have really terrible teeth. I'm in that latter category which also means I am no stranger to dentists. I'm a full-time grad student and sometime towards the end of the Fall semester a pretty deep filling fell out of a tooth. I went to my primary dentist who referred me to Dr. Gamson since he was pretty sure I'd need a root canal and he'd rather have an endodontist check it out. I normally like to research the hell out of someone but since I was sort of on the spot I said yes to going, especially when my dentist assured me that Dr. Gamson was "excellent". After seeing all the five star reviews on Yelp my fears were somewhat assuaged but after my visit I can totally understand the praises heaped upon him. My tooth did, in fact, need a root canal. I also had a prior root canal with an infection due to an improper procedure and he took the time to explain all of this to me in detail and what he was doing. He was very sympathetic and somehow knew how to say and do all the right things to keep me from getting too nervous. As I said previously, I have terrible teeth and have had root canals before. My last one was quite memorable for how painful it was and somehow I got through this one with almost no pain - the worst part was getting numbed up at the very beginning. Before I knew it he was telling me "I'm sorry to tell you, but we're almost done here!" and about five minutes later we were. The procedure itself probably only took half an hour. It's probably a good thing he doesn't practice general dentistry or else nobody would be able to get an appointment with him. I think the lines would be around the block. He was very personable AND efficient. I have to go back to get an apicoectomy [look it up - not a fun procedure] and I'm actually not dreading it. He is totally worth the five star reviews people are giving him. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Gamson. I have many dental issues and have seen Dr. Gamson twice for two different root canals. This first time I came to see him, I was incredibly nervous. I had just had a very bad experience with another dentist attempting to perform my root canal and causing me severe pain. I went to see Dr. Gamson and was put at ease right away by his kind and friendly manner. He was pleasant and compassionate and explained to me exactly what he would be doing and assured me that I would be completely numb and wouldn't feel a thing. And let me tell you- he did NOT lie! I felt nothing and was SO happy to have it taken care of with so little pain. My second experience was just as wonderful- Dr. Gamson fit me in today for an emergency appointment for a tooth that has started causing me intense pain and headaches. When I went in, there was no judgement for not coming in sooner. He simply assured me he was going to help me feel better, took an x-ray and showed me what was going on, and went right to work. I was numbed up and as relaxed as I could be as he serenaded me while he completed another root canal for me. I am so grateful to Dr. Gamson and his staff- dental work can be scary, intimidating, judgemental, and so painful. But at this office, I really do have the most pleasant experience possible. PS- Dr. Gamson is very honest and down to earth- he encouraged me to simply have one of my teeth pulled instead of doing other work on it. Who likes getting root canals? While, I do not ever want to have another root canal again, getting my first one at Dr. Gamson's office was a relatively pleasant experience. I was able to get a 7am appointment, which meant I didn't have to take off much time for work! The staff at the front desk was able to check me in quickly, and answer all questions I had regarding insurance and payment. Dr. Gamson had a very calming demeanor. During my appointment he explained what was going to happen, and talked to me during the entire procedure (but not that annoying thing that dentists do where they ask you a question, fully knowing that you can't answer because their hands are in your mouth.) He is extremely personable, which put me at ease. If a sixth star were available, I'd award it for how well he sang show tunes. I'd award a seventh star for his follow up call. He called me the evening of my appointment to see how I was recovering, and offer suggestions for care moving forward. I still do not enjoy getting a root canal, but I did have a positive experience with Dr. Gamson. I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of the service of an endodontist.
