I wanted to post my excellent and grateful experience with Ed from Ed's Appliance in Arlington earlier this week. We got an order of groceries on Sunday that we washed, removed outer packaging, etc - not a small effort as you all know. By Sunday evening, our five year old GE fridge had gone up to 57 degrees instead of the recommended 37. I started leaving messages for repair people and we put all of our food outside in the rain overnight. A DIFFERENT REPAIR SERVICE, NOT ED, was able to come first thing in the morning. He looked inside the fridge, measured the temp, and asked us how much we liked our refrigerator. He explained that the part that was likely broken was encased in a large cooling tower and and to fix it, we'd have to replace the entire tower, a unit that was expensive and backordered, with no chance of seeing it anytime soon. We got busy researching new refrigerators. When I called Ed to cancel our appointment, he asked why. When I explained, he told me that the information made no sense. I decided to gamble and kept my appointment. Ed picked up a fan before he arrived. He took out all the drawers, unscrewed a few panels from the inside, and replaced the fan. Within hours, the fridge was cold enough to put the food back, and by morning, it was back at 37 degrees. To say that we are grateful is an understatement. The man knows his business and he has sharp instincts. He wore gloves and a mask and was respectful of social distancing (of course, I still scrubbed every inch of that fridge). We don't have a long list of people to call for things, but Ed is definitely the first person I'd call for a large appliance problem. read more

Excellent experience. Scheduled visit for 2 days out (very timely in my experience). Guys showed up just a few minutes after 2-hr time window we were given, and within minutes had our dryer disassembled and the problem diagnosed. They walked me through what the issue is, and assured me it was an easy fix which they were able to do in 30-45 minutes. Dryer sounds brand new again! Finally, I felt the price was inline with the service provided. My only piece of feedback / advice would be for them (or you as the consumer) to put down a drop cloth / tarp where they'll be working, as they left the rug in front of our dryer quite dirty and it required cleaning. But this wouldn't prevent me from using / recommending these guys again. read more

We were referred to Ed's Appliance by our trusted plumbers (Doughty & Sons). Ed returned my message promptly and was able to come out the same day within the hour. He diagnosed the problems with the oven and washing machine and thankfully was able to return first thing the next morning with a part for the oven. He was done 15 minutes after arriving as promised! Fast, professional service. Ed himself was able to come out and take a look at my stove the same day I called. He found the problem, scheduled the day for the part to be replaced, and didn't charge for that initial visit. One of his techs came to do the installation as scheduled, and he was great. I highly recommend Ed's appliance service. My dishwasher was not draining water so I called Ed and was able to set up an appointment in reasonable time. Easy to communicate with and prompt response time. His work was great. Figured out there was a small piece of plastic caught in the drain pump. Instead of having to pay for a new motor he took it apart and removed the the plastic causing the problem. Found Ed's from the Yelp reviews. With 5 stars how could I go wrong? easy by calling and wasting two weeks. I called and left a message, I got a return call a few hours later. All's good, we set up his soonest appointment for a week away. 5 stars on yelp. He has to be worth the wait. The very pleasant and professional tech ( not Ed ) diagnosed the problem then said that Ed would call me back tomorrow with an estimate. So no parts with them, um ok. ( I made Ed aware of the problem when I set the appointment ). After waiting patiently for 4 days I call and speak to Ed. He then says he'll get back to me. I gave him another 4 days then started looking elsewhere. I am truly amazed that someone has to chase someone to give them business and more so that a business owner would fail to follow up with a customer. Thanks for wasting my 2 weeks. read more

I called Ed today for a leaking fridge. I had already diagnosed the problem myself and needed a part replaced. He trusted my judgment, bought the part, came on the same day, installed in 15 minutes and charged his minimum rate. Great experience. I called Ed's Appliance late Monday afternoon of Thanksgiving week with a bum dryer. He called me back promptly and scheduled an appointment for the following afternoon, and even called me ahead so I knew when to meet him - no 6 hour window here. When I got home he was waiting for me, and immediately got down to it. Ed was prompt, pleasant, responsive, and had the dryer up and running in 20 minutes for a very fair price. The circulation pump had stuck on my 18-year old Miele dishwasher. Ed knew immediately what the problem was from my description. He was very clear that the circulation pump might need replacing, although there was a possibility he could free the motor up. He also told me over the phone that a replacement circulation pump is very expensive, and if that was what I needed, he would recommend we buy a new dishwasher instead. Ed does not sell dishwashers. Ed and Sean arrived on time and got to work immediately. They both attempted to free the circulation pump motor, but ultimately it was a no go. However, during the hour they each separately worked on the dishwasher, Ed checked out my Miele gas cooktop at my request. The burners had not been igniting properly. Ed showed me how to unclog the burners with a needle and he also tightened the screws on each burner, which apparently the last repair person had left loose. This turned out to be the major issue, and once the screws were tightened, the burners all work just fine. Ed then showed me the best way to vacuum and blow the dust out of the condenser area of our Subzero refrigerator, showing me exactly how to disassemble the housing so I could do a thorough job. I was charged only for the service call, even though in addition to the work on the dishwasher, I received two tutorials and my gas cooktop was put back into excellent working order. The cost for the service call is one of the most reasonable I've been charged in a very long time, to boot! Additionally, Ed and Sean were both very neat and personable. Except for now having to purchase a new dishwasher, the whole experience was a real pleasure. read more

Ed diagnosed a Kenmore refrigerator not cooling but compressor running as needing a new circuit board. I ordered it (almost $200 and couple days of using small backup refr before it arrived). He came back to put it in plus put in a valve and added refrigerant. Cooled for a day, then no cooling again. I called a few other repair services (Hub and All Brands), both said the coil probably had a leak, common with LG machines who also makes Kenmore, and it can't be repaired due to the configuration of the coils. Both said better to buy Whirlpool who makes their own. So two repair services said based on the phone description that it was not worth fixing. Ed was very responsive but I wouldn't recommend calling him for a refrigerator issue. He did recommend returning the circuit board to Sears. We paid him $200 after the second visit (when it was cooling for a day), didn't ask for a refund, and he didn't offer. read more

Ed is amazing. He built a complex dryer vent -- with several turns in it -- for us, years ago, and since has returned to vacuum out the lint we can't reach when we call him to do so. This week I called him because my washer was making loud banging noises and rocking away from the wall in the spin cycle. He called back within hours and advised me to first try running it empty, thinking an overload might have just thrown it temporarily off balance. He was right. Washer fine, no house call, no charge.
