Edmonds Montessori is such a wonderful place for my children. The staff are excellent and the school is very well run, calm and nurturing. One of my children has sensory needs and the structure and amazing teachers really helped her work through a lot of hurdles. She graduated with confidence personally and educationally for the next steps ahead. My other child loves being a part of the group and his favorite time of day is "circle time" where the children explore topics such as the sound of the week building on reading skills and socially sharing about different items from their homes. It's a pretty special place and we would highly recommend. For an extended morning, lunch bunch is a great way to make the session 1 hour longer and the kids get to eat together and play inside/outside after school. read more

We love Edmonds Montessori. Our second child will be starting this week as our first moves on. It is a real Montessori school- not a daycare- it is quiet and calm in the classroom and the children are taught so many useful life and academic skills. Our daughter has started sounding out words before starting kindergarten thanks to Miss Ella and Hana's work with her and finished the year much more confident than when she walked in. Our children participated in summer session together and thrived with Christi and her staff. We came from a Montessori school in a different city that had outside play before and after and spending the whole session in the classroom is not an issue at all. There's a park outside where people often meet after class and lunch bunch available for and extended hour. Plenty of social emotional learning happens in the classroom through shared activities. If you're looking for a real preschool experience for your child we would recommend Edmonds Montessori in a heartbeat. read more

Our oldest attended Edmonds Montessori and currently our youngest attends. One of the benefits of having our children in full time childcare at Main Street Kids in the same building is that the two schools take the kids back and forth. Without this unique partnership, it would be difficult to have them in the 3 hour EM program as a dual working parent household. Both have greatly benefited from the Montessori method. Our oldest was already reading and writing before kindergarten and has advanced fine motor skills from all the activities she was able to do during her time at EM. Our youngest is already on her way to early reading, writing and loves doing the self directed projects. Being able to adapt between the EM learning environment and a traditional preschool environment set our oldest up for success in kindergarten and I'm sure our youngest will be just as prepared. Both have developed confidence and a love for learning that we wholeheartedly attribute to the Montessori approach to learning. Christi, the owner, and the teachers (Ms. Ella, Ms. Hana) are wonderful and caring. Throughout the year, there are fun traditions to look forward to as well. Well since most of the reviews are pretty old, I will give a recent perspective of the experience we had. We ended up at Edmonds Montessori mostly because it was one of the only schools open for in-person learning and it was cheaper than the other one (which I had actually liked better). The experience was fine at first and I really liked that they offered a summer program. I was really turned off though by the fact that they don't have anytime outside because the headmistress feels that being outside and playing on a playground would "take away from our precious class time" and "all education is designed to be classroom oriented" (quotes taken directly from their FAQ page). Apparently, she doesn't understand how critical it is to children to go outside and play and to their development. The type of skills kids can learn outside in school environment simply cannot be accomplished in a classroom, especially one that emphasizes individual work. When speaking with another parent who had had her older child go through their program, she mentioned that while her child could read and write, he had 0 socialization skills. I had noticed that the teachers had a very cold and authoritarian disposition towards the students and I rarely saw them just sit down with the kids and really engage with them while they were playing on the floor, only when doing individual lessons. I will admit I never spent a lengthy amount of time watching the class but I know several other parents who expressed the same sentiment to me (and coincidentally also pulled their kids from the school). There was one child I would see who would routinely be dropped off bawling his eyes out and his mother would just walk away. The amount of comfort (or lack thereof) I saw not only from the mom, but also the teachers in this matter broke my heart. The basically just tried to distract him with activities rather than provide any sort of empathy or comfort. The first major red flag of unprofessionalism appeared at the end of the year BBQ when one of the teachers said to me and in front of all three of my children who were in her class "Miss L is my favorite". While I certainly don't think it is ever appropriate to say such things to a parent, it is particularly hurtful to say in front of other children. I chucked it off to a slip of the tongue, but it always rubbed me the wrong way. But apparently favoritism is just a thing at this school. This became clearly evident at the parent-teacher conference when the other teacher in the class basically put one of my twins on a golden pedestal and made disparaging comments about the other. And whenever there was an issue between the two of them it was always the same twin who they didn't seem to like that was sent to the other classroom. I was very concerned about the effects of having teachers with a clear and evident bias towards one of my child would affect her experience at a preschool so I had a discussion with the headmistress to address all my concerns and we moved the "unliked twin" to the other class. Within days of starting the headmistress had a close contact with covid and rather than getting a rapid test and decided to wait on the results of a PCR. She did alert families immediately and she did stay home, but literally half the class was out with covid including my daughter. I was shocked that they didn't shut down the class given how many were out and that they continued to eat lunch in that room. There was no mention of doing a thorough cleaning or anything. After that experience and the fact that the aforementioned teacher continued to make her unhanded comments about the twin whenever I talked to her, I finally got fed up with everything and pulled them out, and I have not for a second regretted that decision. read more

What started out as a great school has gone downhill. There has been a lot of teacher turnover this year. They are on their fourth teacher in 6 months, so something is definitely wrong. But this is not the biggest problem with Edmonds Montessori. Two days ago we were emailed by another parent telling us to check our daughter for lice. We did and sure enough she had it. At no small expense we had her and her siblings deloused and our house has been turned upside down - finishing the 25th load of laundry as I write this. It turns out the Montessori had known that there was an outbreak for a full week but had not informed any of the parents. We emailed the owner and received no reply. There are now 7 confirmed cases of lice at the school. We got the owner on the phone to express our outrage that she'd kept the information from us and she replied that she had "no obligation to communicate this to the parents, nor any intent to do so". We were shocked and dismayed by this response. We took it upon ourselves to communicate this to the entire school so at a minimum they could have their child checked. In response we received a voice mail from the owner saying we were abusing the class email list and that we should cease. My take: The owner has no children in the program anymore; her oldest is in college. Her primary motivation is to make money, and your kids and mine are simply a means to an end. We are very disappointed with this egregious lack of common sense. read more

While I understand Peter's frustration and position, I have a different perspective. I love this school, and feel that Christi has helped our son in such a massive capacity since he's been there. When he started in September, our son was withdrawn socially, wouldn't participate in class activities, didn't talk much in school, was resistant to instruction, etc. Now, in April, he's consistently engaged with the other kids, his vocabulary is thru the roof, sits with the group at circle time, and (for the most part) does what he's told. I'm early to pick our son up from school every day and watch the class thru the window, and I can say that Christi is great at her job and puts a lot of effort and caring into her work. As far as being in the business to make money...well obviously. We're all in our own line of work to make money to support our families. Is she in this JUST to make money? I don't believe so; not even a little bit. She has gone above and beyond the call of duty with our son and in my opinion she truly cares about these kids and their development. There are several families that live as far away as Everett that go thru a lot of hassle to get their kids to downtown Edmonds to attend this school every day. Seems like a lot of work for a 1 star school. read more

I cannot say enough great things about this school. We enrolled our son during a period of huge changes in his life. A move from out of state, followed by the birth of a sister all within his first six weeks of entering preschool for the first time. He was treated with such care and understanding from Ms. Christi and Ms. Esma that our whole family immediately felt at home and comfortable. Although our lives settled down as the school year wore on, we continued to enjoy our experience with this preschool. These teachers obviously love what they do and care greatly about each child as an individual. I was routinely updated in person by Ms. Christi about his progress and sometimes just a funny story about his day at school and always appreciated the personal interest she took in my child. Just as a note. During the 2012-13 school year there were three cases of lice at the school. Each time parents were promptly notified by email. read more

Both of my kids attended Edmonds Montessori. If it was possible to still have them enrolled in Christi's class, they would be. The time they spent here was priceless, to us and to them -- worth every penny. We pass by there every now and then, and both kids mention how they wish they could go back, even for just a day. To address another comment, neither of my children got lice while they were there. They did get it in public school though. While it's not the most fun thing to deal with, it is pretty common. There are so many more things that are actually important to your child's education. Why is Montessori so important? Because it will give your child an excellent foundation to build on. Especially if your child is a little different. Times are changing, and public education is struggling to keep up. They expect your child to fit into a box, and Montessori isn't just outside of the box, it gives your child a box to stand on. I couldn't recommend this school more. I had my grandson in this school at the time that is being discussed by Peter T. I completely DO NOT agree with anything other than the 2 words "great school" On the first day of the first case of lice Ms. Christi met every parent and child at the door to the classroom and immediately identified that lice had been found on a child the day before and that the classroom, carpets, counters and material that can be washed had been washed. I loved how personal the interaction was at the door, and felt greatly comfortable with the path taking through the event. I am taken back in disgust on 2 more specific points. This being my 6th grandchild I have seen lice at school with all of them. The Edmonds school district has a policy that a child found with lice is not asked to leave school, its not a crisis or emergency and there is 0 notification unless the outbreak exceeds a certain number of total student population. I greatly was thankful how Ms Christi quitely identified the situation 1 on 1 privately at the door. Also I find it interesting that Peter T did not share during the same week 9 elementrys in 2 school districts in the immediate area, the local YMCA, Boys and Girls Club all had lice situations that were publicly identified. Crazy thought to think that Edmonds Montessori caused all of Peter T.'s frustrations. The 2nd issue related to his statement of "Her primary motivation is to make money", really???? What a uneducated statement. Ms Christi beems with excitement and enthusiasim to work with children, lives her life modestly and I think that I have been educated that her son got a merit scholarship from his academic achievements in school. My oldest son started out this school year at Edmonds Montessori. This was his first real preschool experience where I left him. We did co-ops in the past when he was younger. I was worried that 3 hours would not be enough for him to really learn and retain information he was being taught. I was completely wrong. Edmond Montessori has given my son a great sense of independence and foundation tools to help him become ready for Kindergarten. Within the first month or two, he was already able to recognize numerical numbers. He started at age 3. The teachers are amazing! They helped me and my son feel safe and comfortable with the transition of him entering school. We love Edmonds Montessori and would recommend this school whole heartedly. read more

My children loved every moment at Edmond Montessori. I loved that when they started out in public school they were way ahead of the other kids. Our son learns differently and not only did Christi help him find his way she helped us understand and learn to work with his differences. She has always gone above and beyond meeting with us during her time off when we were at our wits end. She has been available to us even after our children had moved on. It is a wonderful thing to know someone cares so much for your kiddos. I wish they could have stayed through higher grades. This was a wonderful investment in my kids' futures that has paid off again and again as they have moved through elementary. read more
