I don't know how I found out about Edinburgh Diner (maybe a food TV show like Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives?), but I've had it bookmarked for years because of their giant pork tenderloin sandwich. On a road trip to Florida from Wisconsin we timed leaving home so we could stop at Edinburgh Diner for lunch. I got the giant pork tenderloin sandwich, my wife got a chicken ranch wrap, one kid got a turkey bacon ranch wrap, and the other kid got a grilled cheese. We also shared mozzarella sticks. Nobody was impressed by their meals, including me with the giant pork tenderloin sandwich. I thought it was really dry and flavorless. Neither the tenderloin itself or the breading were seasoned. To eat it, I found it easiest tearing the tenderloin into four sections and stacking them on the bun. My wife and kid that got the wrap ended up switching because they preferred the wrap the other had. Like the tenderloin, the chicken was dry and both thought there was too much ranch in the wraps. Where former customers stood to wait their turn to place their order at the counter now seems to be a waste of space since they offer full table service. The staff is super friendly, accommodating and goes the extra mile to serve their customers. If you order water, they ask if you want lemon in it. The food comes out amazing fast, fresh and hot. They are famous for their pork tenderloin. The sandwich is made from a pound of tenderloin that is lightly battered with a corn meal batter and flavored with pepper and salt. The meat dwarfs the bun and covers the tray that it is served on. You can add tomato, lettuce, onions and pickles for a buck and fries for two more dollars. The sandwich arrives piping hot, the meat is tender and juicy. The sandwich could easily be shared by four people and they are happy to provide additional bun. Most guests share the sandwich. This pork tenderloin is among the top best in Indiana. If you can't finish your sandwich, they are happy to provide to-go containers. Other menu options looked great as well, they offered deals on wraps the day we were there. The catfish sandwiches appear popular. The prices are fantastic with most sandwiches ranging from $7-$10. Here we are, another review about the Edinburgh Diner with the sole motivating factor being their Pork Tenderloin Sandwich. All I have to say about that is, I get it now. The ridiculous portion, bang for you buck, and overall taste lives up to the hype. For the current cost of $9.99 you can get this bad boy, breaded and seasoned nicely, fried to perfection, and the pork tenderloin actually has some meat to it which I personally appreciate. Don't expect much from the ambiance or atmosphere. I'm pretty sure it used to be a fast food joint previously, but go for that classic mom and pop diner vibes. Even though they have a limited menu - I imagine like their pork tenderloin everything is quality. I went at an off hour on a Saturday around 3:30 p.m., and we were able to get a table no problem. I'd long contemplated a trip down to Edinburgh, Indiana to give the Edinburgh Diner's semi-legendary breaded tenderloin a try. Located on the southern end of Johnson County, the Edinburgh Diner is about a 40-45 minute drive and it's a pretty pleasant drive. While it's easy to think "Why would I drive all the way to Edinburgh?," the truth is that Edinburgh has a few decent sights to see and also surprisingly good shopping located a couple miles from the diner at the Edinburgh Outlet Mall. I've heard hit-and-miss things about the breaded tenderloin sandwich. It's a sandwich noted primarily for its size, though I know at least one tenderloin blogger who thinks that's its most redeeming feature. That said, there are many who also swear by the sandwich and while I'm not a tenderloin connoisseur I was anxious to give it a try. There was simply no doubt it would be my selection for the day. Let's get the basics first. The Edinburgh Diner is for the most part wheelchair friendly. Parking is plentiful and entryways are level to the ground. This is a smaller diner by Indy standards, but it's a pleasant diner for a smaller town. As I entered, I instantly felt both welcomed and comfortable. It was also easy to find a table that worked well with the wheelchair. Employees were friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The breaded tenderloin, and only weirdos order a tenderloin grilled (Are you a weirdo?), is a 16-ounce slab o' wonder pounded out (a bit too thin for me) and deep fried. It's not only bigger than the bun, it's probably bigger than three buns. The tenderloin sandwich alone is $9.99, though you can get a side of fries for an extra $1.99. You do need to add $1 to get the sandwich deluxe. I'm an overweight glutton, so I added the fries. Hey, everybody's got their sins. Gluttony is mine. Among the sandwiches on the menu, the tenderloin is the star and the priciest. You can get various burgers, wraps, etc. all for under $10. Quite honestly, there's not a price on the menu I'd be hesitant to pay. They serve Coke products, iced tea, and lemonade. If you've read any of my reviews, you know I'm passionate about iced tea. I did get my always desired refill because, well, when you're eating a tenderloin this big you need to drink. There are also chicken sandwiches and "super sandwiches," both of which actually come with fries. I typically lean toward the chicken sandwich and would likely try that in the future. The tenderloin is quite good. As I noted, it's pounded a bit thinner than I typically like but I definitely enjoyed it and would easily order it again. If you're someone who believes that size matters (You can admit it. We're all friends here.), then you likely owe it to yourself to give this one a try. It's appropriate, I suppose, that it's in "Johnson" county. I'm just saying. Seriously, though. I'm not quite ready to call this a 5-star experience, though it's easily a solid 4-star experience. I actually really liked the fries, as well. For the record, no, I didn't bring any of the sandwich home. It's that gluttony thing, ya know? If you prefer a thinner tenderloin that is still well-seasoned and flavorful, then this will likely make you quite happy. We visited the diner on a Sunday afternoon prior to a trip to the outlet mall in Edinburgh. From the outside, the diner looks like an old RAX because well, it is an old RAX. There is plenty of parking and the parking lot is easy to get in and out of. Upon entering, the process is slightly confusing. behind the old RAX counter is a digital menu board and a cash register that makes it look like you step up and place your order. This is not the process. On the counter, there is a spiral notebook that you write your name in and as tables become open, you are seated by staff. If you have not visited here before, this can be confusing. The diner seats about 50 people so we did not have to wait long. After we sat down, the server brought us two menus that were torn and tattered. This may add to the charm, but also seems a little lazy. The old RAX is painted an off-putting shade of pink and there are multiple pictures hung on the wall that look like they came from the shelf at Goodwill. They are the kind of pictures that Grandma would have on her wall. The atmosphere could definitely use some TLC. I do not think that it takes away from what I am about to say about the tenderloin, but a different color of paint and maybe pictures of old Edinburgh on the wall would be nice. Now, on to the tenderloin. The breaded tenderloin is the reason that we came here. Everything that has been said about the tenderloin is true. We ordered two and knew that we would taking home leftovers, so we actually brought a cooler in our car. The tenderloin is 16oz. The breading has an extra spice in it or something that is a nice touch that gives it a unique and very pleasant taste. We got pickles on the side and didn't know until we got our bill that pickles are 25 cents. Considering the tenderloin is only $9.99, a charge for pickles is okay. I ordered fries just because and I could have done without them. I did not have enough room in by stomach for the fries! The tenderloin here is easily in my top five that I have had in Indiana. (D & N Diner Lafayette, Shore Line Brewery Michigan City, Riverside Monticello, DT Lafayette). The size and price are fantast, but it is actually a good thin tenderloin. The four stars is only because of the atmosphere. The tenderloin is definitely a five-star loin. We will definitely be back when we visit the outlet mall or are just passing by on I-65. Note upon entering....there is a book to sign so u can be seated only most didn't follow that particular direction as we saw some walk right in and sit down at a table still unsure which is the business preference. As we waited almost 30 min for a table only to sit another 20 minutes for a drink order to be taken. Once the kitchen got caught up our order was finally taken and food was brought out in record time. The tenderloin was seasoned perfectly, HUGE portion, definitely can cut in half and make 2 meals. The onion rings were average, and the French fries were just blah, like a Kroger brand cooked at home. I opted for the crispy chicken, first they flattened it like the tenderloin, dark meat I might add and must use the same batter as it was greasy and no seasoning on it at all. Be careful with the hot sauce bottle as it squirts weird and can get on your clothes if not careful! Staff was all over the place but I am sure doing the best they could with what they had. This isn't my first trip here but it may be my last. The first time we ever came to Edinburgh Diner, we found it to be a clean restaurant with friendly staff and good food. On each subsequent visit, the staff was still friendly but it was a little less clean and the food quality had slipped. On this last visit, the landscaping around the restaurant was weed choked, trash was piled up in the back of the parking lot and blowing around. Inside, tables were not quite clean and most chairs at the tables were filthy. The saddest part of our visit, however, was the food. My husbands tenderloin was as big as usual, but the edges were so thin, it was mostly just breading on breading. He usually has to take part of his sandwich home but after cutting off the inedible over-done edges, there were no left-overs. My french dip was a mostly empty bun and what little bit of roast beef there was was over cooked and dry. Can't believe we've never tried this place and it's so close. It's nothing fancy but it reminds you of an old school diner. They serve everything on trays which is neat. They use styrofoam cups for drinks. I forgot to take pics of everything but we ordered onion rings and cheese sticks for appetizers and both were good. Onion rings were a bit over fried. But not greasy. I got a Reuben and didn't care for it. The meat was sliced thick and there was no thousand island on it. Definitely wouldn't get again. The giant tenderloin is amazing. I can see why people travel for it. You can add on an extra bun for an extra charge. Easily could have fed 4 of us with same tenderloin. Fries are pretty good. Once I learned that this place existed, I knew I needed to find a way to get there. My son & I made the journey from Eastern Pennsylvania on our way to Indianapolis for the race. We stopped by a little after noon on Friday before the Memorial Day weekend and were seated right away. The waitress was quick to take our order and bring our drinks. Our food wasn't too far behind. The experience was exactly what I expected (and hoped for). This was definitely an old RAX (as others have said), and the interior hasn't been updated since the 90s. However, when you're there for the tenderloin, it doesn't matter what the interior looks like as long as it's clean. The food tasted great. As others said, you're not going to fall in love with the fries, but for $1.99, they're worth it. I ate about 6 fries and gave up, as the tenderloin itself is all you need. Definitely make the journey to this place if you're ever in the area, or can find a way to make it part of your travels like we did. The waitress said we came the right day (Wed) because Tuesday and Wednesday are their slow days, while Thursday - Saturday there is often a 1 hr wait. I opted for their homemade soup of the day: chicken noodle. The broth had really good flavor and tiny macaroni noodles. I really liked it and it was a lighter option to french fries as a side. The staff was really nice and my husband and I enjoyed talking to them. There just happened to be an older gentleman that came in and parked his 1949 Ford. We saw another classic car and a classic truck while driving around town a few blocks, so that was fun. We read somewhere this used to be an old Dairy Queen. Not far from the outlet mall is this hidden gem. Inside an old Burger King, the decor is kitschy and reminiscent of the past all while feeling homey. This place is known for their tenderloins; an Indiana thing. I did not eat one but saw many of them come out of the kitchen as big as hub caps looking delectable. Our food was really good. My mom had the Ruben which she thoroughly enjoyed, I had the special gyro wrap, so good! My daughter had the chicken ranch wrap and said it was really good too. This a great local place if you want to get out of the chain area right by the outlet mall. Staff was friendly and attentive. The prices were great too. I paid just a bit more for this meal than I paid for 4 coffees earlier that morning. We'll go back for sure! read more
