The staff is very friendly and helpful for those who have never been here before. There are many different levels of difficulty in the bouldering areas which I really enjoyed. For those who have younger children there is even an area for them to climb and play in which I find as a perk. For about $25 you get shoes plus unlimited bouldering time. SG has five sections: 1 wall climbing, 2 bouldering, 1 bouldering for kiddos, and a small gym in the corner. There are also locker rooms, a greeter's desk, and a wall of shoe rentals that you can help yourself to after checking in. Climbing routes are all color coded and labeled with signs detailing difficulty level and how long they've been up. Everything is clean and well maintained. Good music, too! I was very impressed by the sense of community here. Everyone is super engaged in their climbing and really enjoy themselves while doing it. I've heard multiple climbers say that SG tends to be tougher on the difficulty levels compared to other gyms, so that might be something to consider if you're buying a package. As far as safety goes, there were very few staff doing walk through's around the gym and I think that would've been so helpful for beginniners like me. read more

Do not have your child's birthday party here. We had 12 kids RSVP and then 16 show up. Stone Gardens asked the parents on the way in if the kids would be climbing. So, four younger siblings were charged $36 dollars even though the day fee is $20 and we hired an additional instructor. We did the set up and the clean up. The total bill was close to $600. Also, the cancellation policy for their Junior Program is that it is non-refundable even if giving over a week's notice and a proclaimed 'wait list'. Also, the instructors have zero control over the kids in the 6-8 program but blame it on the parents. One day 'all the kids we're out of control' and they listed all the grievances to the parents at pick up. If all the kids are out of control, perhaps the instructors are not trained to handle young children. read more

The facility doesn't justify the price. Compared to other facilities we've been to across the country and which charge a lot less, the number of routes at Stone Garden pales (there are so few of them) and the range in difficulty is quite limited. Further we booked an hour for the kids and clearly the "instructor" didn't seem thrilled to be doing that kind of job. He didn't provide any instructions, didn't motivate them to climb up, and brought the kids to the adult section with an incline that is not suited for first timers or at least not kids instead of bringing them to the kids section where the climbs are manageable. They had such a hard time climbing. It felt like a waste of money. If they offer these 1h sessions for kids then they should train the staff to know how to teach the kids. read more

Amazing Rock Climbing Gym I've been climbing at Stone Gardens for a bit over year now, and I'm hooked. It's an amazing rock climbing gym. It has two huge bouldering rooms and one huge top-roping rooms and severam (four I believe) auto-belays. The route/problem difficulty is reasonable. V0 is doable by anyone, V10 by almost noone, which is as expected :) There are plenty of routes of all difficulties. The average route is up for about 45 days, which is long enough to get to it while not too long to get in the way. The setters are always setting new routes around the gym, so you have new areas to climb every week. The route variety is amazing. They have a great variety of holds, and it seems they keep getting new ones all the time. The holds are color and texture-matched, which makes it easier to figure out which route is which. The floor pads are amazing. It's really thick, and you don't need separate crash pads. You can jump off from the top of any bouldering problem without any issues. You can always hurt yourself of course, but it's really hard in this gym. I feel it's really safe. I've taken several classes and they have been great. The pricing is reasonable, and I believe they limit class size to 4 people only, which is excellent. I've also done a private with one of their instructors, and that was great as well. They also have a great weight room that you can use for conditioning, so it can certainly replace a "normal" gym - you don't need any other gym memberships. They even have yoga classes included in your monthly membership. I'm yet to try one, but it's a great option to have. The locker room is nice with plenty of lockers. A bit crowded during busy times but not too bad. They also have a couple of showers available for use, and towel service - both shower towels and workout towels. The pricing is reasonable. I've been doing monthly membership (about $75/month) for the past year. It's close to my work and I've been coming several days a week, so it's definitely a great deal for me. People in the gym are great, both the staff and other fellow climbers. As I keep coming I'm meeting more and more friendly people, and climbing is becoming even more fun. Overall I'm totally addicted to this place and rock climbing. I tried another rock climbing gym in Arizona during a trip last year and it was horrible compared to this gym. I hear this gym is going to be expanding soon as well. Overall it's a wonderful place and I can't recommend it highly enough. read more

Daaaaaang the guy who helped us at this location tonight should not work a job which requires him to interact with humans. We didn't even get to climb! Homeboy, idk his name but he was Asian, was extremely rude and weird. Rock climbing is supposed to be a fun activity and I've always dealt with easy-going and friendly employees but this experience was terrible!! I went with my boyfriend, 30 years old, and his little siblings who had been there before and had previously signed waivers. The dude wouldn't let us climb because even though my boyfriend is their guardian, he requested a "parent." That's a little parentist if you ask me. Zero stars if I could. Ain't coming back ever. For someone who has never been to a rock climbing gym before, I think Stone Gardens does a great job of on boarding everyone to be sure that they understand what is going on before you get yourself going bouldering. They make sure to welcome you in. You have a short training and they explain the climbing system. I appreciate the variety of climbs. The one where you scale a wall onto a cliff is reminiscent of my childhood, especially once you try to figure out how to get down. read more

I normally boulder and this was a nice change of place from where I usually go (SBP). Came here on a Thursday evening and this was my first time at SG Bellevue. I went to the Ballard location before and thought it was pretty cramped. This location is much larger and open in space. Also lots of parking available! I took the belay test and I already forgot her name, but she was super helpful and nice. I don't know why but I always get super nervous before these things. She was nice and gave me extra tips to better my technique. She also taught me how to use the auto belay. The set up of the gym consists of top roping in the center with two bouldering areas on the left and right side of the gym. Behind the left side is a small work out facility with some hang boards, crimp wall, and a few work out machines. The bathroom is also located back there. The right side has a mini kids area as well. All in all a fun experience. The routes were pretty fun and I like how the routes AREN'T taped. They're color coded by holds. This is much easier on the eye. It's a clean climbing gym. They also have draws everywhere so if you were lead certified, you can do lots of lead climbing here. I wish it was closer to Seattle though.. then I'd consider getting a punch card. It's definitely WAY LESS crowded than SBP! read more

I am really surprised how good this gym is. Walls where constructed by Walltopia and have a good variation of features such as overhangs, slabs and face. The nice feature they have is auto belays if you do not have a belay partner. My only knock on this place is the route setting for bouldering. They do not believe in intermediate moves and do not set enough foot holds. read more

Love!!! My favorite place to go rock climbing. Bright gym, well marked trails and friendly staff. The climbs is marked well with different colors and that is very important for me. I've been to another rock climbing gym in Tacoma where the rocks were marked with tape and it was so hard to see especially when you are looking down as you climb. So the different color stones are tremendous help. It does get crowded around 630pm weekdays but I have never had to wait too long for a rope. Sunday's afternoon are usually quiet and the best time to go. As another yelpeR mentioned, it seems like they have an after school program going on and there are a lot of kids running around. For the most part, the teachers keep a good handle on them. Once in a while, a stern word is needed with the kids. The other patrons are very friendly. Everyone here are more than willing to give advice or encouragements. I have met so many nice people here. They have a tiny gym in the back with adequate equipment if you want to squeeze a quick workout in. One star off because last time my friend got her wallet and phone stolen from her locker. Granted she did not lock it but still. If you come here, make sure to bring a lock to lock your stuff up!! read more

Nice facilities, friendly staff, and plenty of bouldering paths for all skill levels. I stuck to VB, V0, V1 tracks, but tried a couple V2s. It seems the V2s are much more difficult than what they were graded for. At Seattle Boulder project I've had no issues with V2s, so there's clearly a difference in how they are graded between the 2 places. $25 for all day pass and shoes for bouldering; pretty standard. Perfect for people with kids! They have an area that is very kid-friendly; a little playground Boulder area, as well as a climbing wall for those kids who want to rock climb. read more

My husband and I just started going here. We had no experience with climbing and took the 101 class. I think our instructor's name was Kyle, and he was super chill. Laid back, explained things really well. They have quite a few membership options, and they don't lock you in with silly contracts and such. They have many routes for both bouldering and climbing, and in just a few weeks time we noticed routes being changed. We've noticed the weight room/small exercise area but haven't utilized it yet. I've seen that other reviewers have mentioned this room usually being empty, but every time I've been there people are using in it. Not in a super crowded way, but it probably won't be totally empty. Overall, I really like the vibe in this gym. Not a lot of judgement going around, and both staff and other members have been really friendly. The rentals aren't very expensive, but if you're going to go with any sort of frequency at all; your own gear wouldn't be super expensive either. I have never noticed a BO odor that another reviewer mentions...this place is pretty clean and I've never noticed any kind of particular odor at all. If you're interested in just getting started or an area to practice your skills, I recommend this place for sure. Also, if you have kids, I'm sure this place will wear them the eff out. Came here for the kids to try out rock climbing. We came by to ask questions first and set up the private belay option. Since we can do 4 people with 1 worker, we all opted to try. Came back for our time and it was much less busy on Fri afternoon than it had been a weekday evening! We liked that it wasn't too busy being completely new at this. The gal who helped was super friendly and helpful. She wasn't any bigger than my preteens so I worried about her belaying us large adults. But she explained the rope system and how it holds us. First we bouldered to get warmed up. She was helpful in guiding us through the system for picking out easy routes. She was encouraging to keep trying to go higher. Then we went to climb with the ropes. This is where you wait while 1 in the group gets to climb. However, you can learn a lot by watching where they go. My kids enjoyed this a lot, including watching others around them climb. And yes, my overweight self even attempted a climb. I was able to get higher than I thought I could. And the tiny gal was able to hold me when I was coming down. Super impressed. We ended up bouldering some more...this place is HUGE. Had a super fun time....and I know we got more than an hour. Highly recommend the 1 hour belay. They have classes and kid teams. it's not cheap and you sign up a month in advance. This place has a membership, so you must be a member or with a member to climb. I've been climbing and bouldering at Stone Gardens for about 3 months now, and I love it! I started a climbing group at my work, and we climb on Tuesdays around lunchtime. This place is perfect for us because it's close to the office and offers both climbing and bouldering, which is great because we have people with a mix of preferences in our group. The staff is incredibly friendly and I was so impressed that they knew me by name after only a few visits. Considering how busy they get (in the evenings especially), knowing individual climbers by name is no mean feat. If you're into climbing: - They have a good selection of routes with a wide range of difficulty levels - Not all the walls are just vertical; there's quite a few nice bulge routes and some crag routes - They have three auto-belay devices that you can use if you don't have a partner - If you don't have your own harness and/or carabiner + belay device, you can rent it from the front desk If you're into bouldering: - As with climbing, there's quite a decent selection of routes of varying difficulty levels. My only complaint about the routes is that the numbering doesn't seem to be that consistent. For example, a V2 route in the "cave" might seem easier than it should be, but then you try another V2 and it feels like the level of a V4. That said, if you just examine the routes and not pay too much attention to the labelled levels, you can easily determine what is climable for you and what isn't. General pros: - Great that it caters to both climbers and boulderers without making either group feel jipped in terms of space or quality of routes - First aid supplies are available - They change the routes often enough that I have yet to run out of routes at my level in any given climbing or bouldering session (I climb for 1 - 1.5 hrs at a time) - If you have a membership, you can charge any purchases or rentals directly to your account, so you don't need to worry about bringing cash or your wallet - They have a gym in the back! So, you really get your money's worth whether you come to climb or just want to hit the treadmills or lift some weights - As mentioned above, the staff is great! Very helpful and super friendly - Great hours; I especially love that they're open so late The one con: - It can get really, really busy on weeknights after work, which is why we moved our climbing club to lunchtime instead. The only downside to that is that they are usually setting routes during the day, so not all walls are available. That said, running out of routes has never been an issue, even when they were prepping for the Seattle Bouldering Challenge and there was only 1 wall available for bouldering Overall impression: This is a great climbing gym to check out if you're looking for something that offers both bouldering and climbing, or even if you just do one or the other. You won't get bored because they change their routes often enough. They offer a good selection of routes for climbers/boulderers of all levels. The facility is impressive. Some of the staff come across as dismissive and arrogant. I thought my first visit there when my family received this attitude that it was just the workers having a bad day. On repeat visits it has been the same. While taking the repelling test, they require a figure eight knot. I've repelled using a different system. I asked what he meant by a figure eight knot. He smirked and said, "You just failed the test." A couple of teens were near by and started laughing at me for my lack of skill. The employee joined in with giggling with the teen patrons. I asked to be shown how to make the figure 8 knot so I could retake the test. I was informed that I would have to come back another day to test that it was a pass fail and I failed so no further assistance would be provided. I made the mistake of asking why that was the policy. I was then informed that I would be removed from the premises if I had an issue with the rules. Wow... Mind you, I asked the question in earnest. I did not raise my voice, nor have an attitude. I simply inquired why that was a rule. I then got threatened with removal and a loss of the funds I had paid for the session and rental gear. Our previous encounters with the staff were similar in attitude but not to this extent. After reading other reviews on Yelp, it looks like others had the same interaction. We will be using other rock climbing gyms in the area and will never return to Rock Gardens. read more

Amazingly designed, Staff is friendly and helpful, Ben especially is the nicest guy I see there. They are open till 11pm so I can easily manage to go there after office hours. Its Pricey but if you are going regular as a member its way more than reasonable. Price is okay for facilities and cleanliness they provide. Best climbing gym in the greater Seattle area. I climbed for six years on the East Coast and called the DC Earth Treks locations my home gyms. When I moved out here I was super disappointed in the dark, old, grungy gyms in Seattle with lead walls barely taller than bouldering height. Bellevue Stone Gardens is the world class climbing gym that you would expect in 2018 in a major city. Love the one star reviews. Exactly who I don't want at the gym. A climbing gym isn't a play ground. Sorry your seven kids can't run wild like a private daycare. Sorry all the 5.8's feel inconsistent in grade. Sorry you failed your "rappelling?!?" test. Be humble, put in a little time, and enjoy the sport. read more

Great place, music can be annoying Lots of bouldering, tall walls for toprope and lead climbing (unlike VW they provide you with a rope at the front desk) with a trio of autobelays if you're waiting for/don't have a partner (they have tags at the desk you can wear to declare you're looking for one) or just want to run laps for ages. Some cardio machines to warm up on, weights and hangboards. They had the genius idea to have a kids climbing area with shorter walls and a ship and placed it next to the party room so it keeps the small ones and the parties out from under foot and keeps their screaming a little more isolated. Lockers or cubbies, a shower, they keep the restrooms pretty clean. Lots of routes to play on of every grade and they're pretty accurate with their grading and the setters tend to offer a wide variety of types of climbing many with interesting technique challenges. My only real gripe is they tend to leave the exact same Pandora station on (slow, depressing tunes), so if you're a regular get ready to hear the exact same twenty songs every single time you go. Somehow the desk doesn't notice this. read more

I ve been climbing at SG for 2 years now. The place is great and their two locations (ballard and bellevue) offer different styles of climbing. I m just getting into bouldering but they have a nice bouldering area. Only four stars because the ballard gym wall are not very tall, and because they are stopping the dry tooling wall :(. My dad, an experienced climber, has taken my girls there many times with no issues. Today he tried to take them and was told we had to hire somebody to climb with him or he had to take a crazy test. Call it age discrimination or trying to make more money, they kept a long-time rock/mountain climber from climbing with his two grandchildren and we won't be back. read more

Pros: * Tons and tons and tons of routes for bouldering. Lots of variety. * Nice top roping and lead climbing area though that's not my cup of tea * Really nice weight lifting / gym area for a climbing gym * Yes, the lighting is nice. Definitely a pro when compared to Stone Gardens Ballard. Cons * Floor mat in bouldering section is waaay too firm. Saw someone sprain an ankle and break a shin bone from falling. * Holds are really raw. Probably because they're so new, but they really, really tear into your hands. * Route ratings are all over the place. Not a big deal, but the variance in difficulties within a V Band varies drastically. Maybe the route setters are just getting used to each other. Overall, pretty good and will come again, but still prefer Stone Gardens Ballard or Seattle Bouldering Project. read more

I have been going to Seattle Bouldering Project for about a year. Then, I had to move to Bellevue so I wanted to find a climbing gym closer. I gave Stone Gardens a try. Overall, it's a decent place for vertical climbing gym, but it's a mediocre place for bouldering. Not that many routes for each level due to the fact that this gym has variety of things to do including a work-out gym in the back. However, I'm rating this place as a boulderer and in comparison to other climbing gyms I have been to. This place is just okay for me. Though, the price is higher than other places. I might come back if I feel like it, but I rather spend extra 20 minutes to drive to Seattle Bouldering Project in Seattle for climb for 2-3 hours. read more

Overall I do like the place but many little things make it "OK" even though I am a fan. I've been to vertical world and SBP. I do enjoy that Stone Gardens layout of the land is easy to access and very straight forward. They let you use your own GriGri so you get a feel of what you would do in the real world. I like the friendly staff and awesome members there. People are nice, courteous, and friendly. Why would I 3 star it then? Here are the things that add up to an overall 3 star experience for me. * What I find confusing is that members are courteous and awesome. So then, why are the instructors so bad? I'm talking about the male trainers that have children to teach. I'm not sure if they are contractors or independent trainers but they are very absent minded. I saw a trainer just yesterday that seemed pretty high (not on life). They seem to either be in their own world or just act like they own the place. All I ask for is that they are as courteous as the members are. Or at least it should be the first thing they teach their kids/clients. We all sign off on the video about not being in the way. The guys who have kids classes take up 4 ropes worth while only using one of them as well as walk under anyone they want when there are a lot of spaces to walk around. I even tried to ask one of the kids that was just playing with a rope I wanted to use and had adverse reactions from him....what did the trainer do? nothing! Note: I did notice that trainers that have a Stone jacket on seem to know much more about their surroundings and have better client controls. * Consistency on grades would be nice. For Example: 5.8 made by G-Na would be a good challenge and a nice climb overall which feels like a 5.8. But a 5.7 made by Le Saint have crazy gaps and are amazingly awkward. Is Le Saint 6'4"? Have a normal person climb it and rate it on some kind of standard please. I stay away from Le Saint now as I am only a 5.9 climber at this time. (This kind of goes in line with what Amanda S put in her review on consistency on the bouldering side) Yup! Just two things downgrade my experience there. Love it otherwise! read more

I like that you don't get hit by the stench of feet upon setting foot on premises. Yes, that aroma is there but it doesn't punch you in the face as much as the Ballard location. This is a big gym with plenty of options and routes for you to explore and is great for climbers of all levels. There is even a great area for kids to play and climb in. read more

This is the best gym in the Puget Sound area if you want to be a well-rounded climber. The bouldering area is huge! My favorite route setter is PD. His routes are technically challenging while also instilling a sense of danger. You could also say this about his top-rope routes as well. Could be good or bad depending on what you like. read more

I've been coming here for about a year and a half, I like this one better than SBP or the Ballard Stone Gardens (though it is nice having access to this location too). The facility is clean, routes change frequently, and ventilation is good. Staff are really nice too. Recently they've added some yoga classes and I've been really enjoying the restorative class with Logan. He does a really great job of mixing up the stretches so it's not repetitive and introducing some (what I consider) more novel poses. I only wish there were more times it was offered! read more

There many different Bouldering routes appropriate to skill level, and they change the routes regularly. There is good padding below the bouldering walls.
