Yet, everything in the central area of Cork City is just a short walk away. The hostel also provides great views of Cork, and the building itself has a lot of character. It is not utilitarian as many other hostels are. The walls are painted vibrant colors and the architecture has a very rustic feel. As for the rooms...the rooms are spacious, the beds are comfortable, and the staff is helpful and friendly. You couldn't ask for more!

It is decorated in a colorful manner that felt energizing. It really felt like what you would expect from a hostel. The employees were not the most helpful and seemed to get a kick out of messing with the American tourists. One of them was downright rude. We wound up having to go up and down from our room 3 times because they told us to pick beds and every time we did they told us to pick new beds because those were already taken. It was rather annoying. What was really annoying was that come midnight, there were still only 4 of us in the room and almost all the beds we had tried to pick were still empty! The rooms did include their own restrooms and showers, which was nice. There was also a decent view from our window and the beds were comfortable enough. Anywho. The kitchen was decent enough but the burners for the stove wouldn't light properly. There wasn't very much storage space available but at least the fridge wasn't a complete disaster. The dining are was ridiculously huge and come breakfast it was crawling with people from the hostel. If you have social anxiety or simply don't like people, skip breakfast.

It took us to the B&B and we couldn't figure it out until we were leaving the first day and there was a Blarney Stone B&B next door! We were greeting warmly and asked if we wanted tea or coffee. We figured it was just tea and coffee - but the pastries! Oh my' There is parking. We were in a larger room but it was up quite a few steps. It's on a fairly busy road but you couldn't hear much. The bathroom is extremely small but worked. The accommodations are not luxurious but worked. The breakfast was out of this world! Several people waited on us. The menu was about 7 pages. There was cold cereal, fruit and pastry, then main dish and then dessert crepe of either chocolate and banana or cinnamon sugar. The location is excellent and you can walk to town from there. A cab was 7 Euros.

Functioning windows with views of the main street and the university entrance. Easy, flat walk to downtown and market. Just across from university grounds, where there are walking paths and beautiful buildings and flora to observe. Hostess was ready with tea and breads the second we pulled into the driveway. Parking is a cooperative dance in the small but adequate lot, and guests are friendly and helpful in shifting vehicles around if need be. Very happy with the room, the location, the servce and the rate. It's a corker!

If that's the environment you're looking for, then Sheila's is the place for you. If, on the other hand, you actually want to sleep at night, then avoid this hostel.

One of the bad things was the fact that I kept waking up and banging my head against the top bunk. Like, ow. You can't even moderately sit up straight. Biggest problem was huge, though... the room stank. Royally reeked. It was so bad I couldn't sleep. It was coming from the bathroom, and it smelled like poo and mold. You heard me, the room I stayed in smelled like POO AND MOLD. The only reason I didn't try and find another hostel was that my card didn't want to work in Ireland, and I was out of cash, and they don't do refunds for their rooms SMELLING LIKE POO AND MOLD. Pro's: free wifi. They now charge for internet, but it was free back then on their computers. Otherwise I wouldn't have used it. The wifi is decent, and I used it often, escaping my room for the comfort of the main room with couches and seats that did *not* SMELL LIKE POO AND MOLD. Their prices didn't stink as much as their room, and they exchange money at the desk, and they have a luggage check room. It's also pretty close to everything else going on in Cork, even though it's somewhat of an uphill hike to get there. Okay. I think I'm done. ...POO AND MOLD.

The…read moreonly thing is our room was facing the Main Street, so it was quite loud in the evening, as you're right over the pubs and nightlife. You are in the heart of the Victorian Quarter, so I suppose that comes with the territory. There was a challenge with the in-room entertainment as the streaming kept either buffering or going in-and-out. One callout is that the hotel does not offer onsite parking, however, they do offer a sight discount for a parking garage they partner with, but that garage--surprisingly--isn't the closest one to the hotel. It's a few blocks away, so that's was a bummer hauling our luggage.

When we arrived at the reception we were greeted by Laura who was out guardian angel at the hotel. She provided us with many hints of what to do from the perspective of a local and assisted us with our problem. The great: The location is excellent. It's a short, 5-10 minute walk to the center of the city. It's close but at the same time nice and quiet. It's also close to a great pub with music and coffee shop around the corner. Greenes restaurant is an easy choice for breakfast. I usually don't eat at hotel restaurants but frankly it's worth eating here. We went to another highly rated place for breakfast and Greenes was much better. And cheaper. Check out the buffet, there are also a la carte choices. The good: the room is spacious as is the bathroom, and the shower is lovely. The bed was comfortable, not to squishy. The problem: our room was very musty. to the point of being a problem. We told Laura about this and she brought an air purifier. This ran during our entire visit and made the situation tolerable. So that's it. Some very good, some not so good.
