After checking prices on Airbnb and other hotel booking websites, I decided to book Econo Lodge University because (1) it had a pretty decent rating and (2) places from Airbnb weren't that much cheaper. This is one of those "you get what you pay for" hotels. For approximately $50 per night (2 Queen Beds), I didn't have to worry about potential parking limitations and possibly late night check-in issues. Not only that, you get slightly more freedom because ultimately you are still living in someone else's home for Airbnb. Shower had slightly weak water pressure, but at least water was hot. You'll need to tap your card to unlock the door. This motel has no fitness room, but it does offer complimentary breakfast. TV was working fine as I was able to watch 2018 World Series Game 5. The neighborhood felt pretty safe and I also noticed few other motels in this particular area. You will need to drive if you want to visit downtown Flagstaff. This place has all of your basic needs. P.S. - The drive to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center (Grand Canyon Village - South Rim) is approximately 90 minutes. read more

No bugs, (not that I expected any but because I'm weird and always check) pillows were small and square but I always bring my own. Room clean and no complaints. Came up to get away from Phoenix and this was a great deal, right off the highway. I don't plan to get breakfast here but it looks like good for something quick. Seating is ok. We stayed here for a couple of nights as our home base for the Grand Canyon. The location is great, right on the main drag and close to the cute downtown. The staff was friendly and of course available for our late night check in. That said, all we did in the room was sleep. we were located on the southeast corner so near the Chick Fil-a drive thru and you could hear everyone placing their orders. the room itself ws basic and got the job don. although it was clean, the age and quality of it still made it seem a bit dirty. The bathroom was a good size and the water pressure more than satisfactory. the small free breakfast was in the lobby and was continental with hard boiled eggs. Came here for a visit to the Grand Canyon with my bf and my small black dog. We felt welcomed by the front desk at our Friday night arrival around 7:30 pm - she recommended nearby dinner and drinks places and the check in process took less than 10 minutes. The amount we were quoted on TripAdvisor was accurate as well. Our room was a few doors down from the lobby so it was easy to find. BATHROOM: Tub is outdated; has some soap stains and a plastic shower curtain isn't always great, but it was fine for quick showers, nothing luxurious. Floor does has some scuffing which looks like dirt at first and was a little off putting. Sink and toilet were spotless. Towels were clean enough, but I may bring my own next time since I was a little skeptical of some spots on the towel hanging on the tub meant to act as a bath mat to the tub. BEDROOM: Two beds was cheaper than one when we were booking, so even though we only needed one we went with this, which made the room definitely feel a little smaller. Pillows are firm and comfortable; blanket feels a little old with 1-2 small holes here and there, but smelled fine and was comfortable for our sleep. OTHER AMENITIES: WiFi is perfect, A/C smells a little musty but is not distracting during sleep, TV has most basic channels, fridge and microwave are convenient. The breakfast in the lobby was simple (cereal, toast, and hard boiled eggs) but I liked the paper plates since I could bring the food back to my room, since there is limited seating. PET FRIENDLY: My small 20-pound black terrier was comfortable here. The grass area is located in the middle of the parking lot with a doggie bag dispenser and a small trash - it's not large at all but it worked for her since she's relatively small. I like that we didn't have to take an elevator so her potty trips were quick. We felt safe leaving her in the room for a couple of hours. Found a dog friendly brunch place (The Toasted Owl) nearby and it was lovely. AREA: We arrived in the evening so only saw a few fast food places nearby, which are great for convenience (Chipotle, Dunkin' Donuts, ChickFilA, etc. as well as a Safeway and Target 2 minutes away). Street was kind of busy so didn't feel comfortable walking in the evening. Other clientele at this hotel include older couples and some tour groups. We did venture to the downtown area the next night 2 minutes away and found a lot of cute stores, restaurants (sushi, ramen, BBQ, brunch, etc), and bars. Grand Canyon is 1.5 hours away but the drive isn't bad and this seems to be the closest town with the most amenities and things to do. I will be honest and say I'm not completely used to staying in a motel-type lodging so I was a little nervous having our room so easily accessible to the street and the parking lot, but my two nights here proved I had nothing to worry about - this is a safe and family friendly town. Overall, a comfortable, safe, and mostly clean place to recharge and relax with lots of convenient restaurants nearby. Can't beat the price and comfort for being nearby the Grand Canyon. My dog really enjoyed it too! :) We would return in the future. read more

I've stayed here multiple times this Spring. There are pros and cons, the cons being significant enough to share with fellow travelers. Pros: Comfortable beds, updated rooms, excellent housekeepers. Cons: BILLING: Twice now, I have gotten phone calls from the front desk to my cell phone on the day I was to arrive to check in. The messages are to call them back immediately as they tried to charge my card before my arrival. The first time, I just popped over to the hotel and asked why they tried to charge my card before arrival but the desk clerk was "No, we don't charge until you arrive. That's strange." So, when it happened again for my most recent stay, I called back and demanded to know why they have this practice. It's a downright creepy thing and as a result, this will be my last stay here. A/C: Not all rooms have adequate cooling. Their solution? Bring you a fan. On days in the high-90's this constitutes unacceptable practice. I had to stand firm on this until they switched rooms but he wanted to refuse me to change since I had sat on the bed (top of coverlet to adjust the a/c). Linens: the blankets are not long enough to drape over the end of the bed. Each visit has required us to go to lobby for towels, etc. read more

Well it's the summer season so they will of course over charge for what you get. It's some what dirty but it is an ECONOlodge... need I say more? We chose this place because they were somewhat "fair" with the pet fee where other hotels charge a hefty deposit with a minimum of $25 a night. You can't come to this place expecting it to be the Ritz. However I do expect clean towels and clean sheets...did we get that? Nope! The plus side is they have every single HBO channel and no bed bugs so if you are looking for a hotel to just lay your head down for a night or two and not hang out or entertain in, then this is the place for you. It's on a busy street so you do get the traffic noise (if your room is close to the road). Thankfully it dies down at night. read more

We arrived around 8:30pm, and it was cold and icy outside. I am not sure who the young man was who checked us in, but it was rather awkward. We pulled in with a 15 foot U-Haul towing an auto transport. We noticed that the parking lot was very small, and we asked if there was a larger lot for our truck. We thought there would be another lot in back of the motel, but there was not. He asked us to remove the trailer and park it separately from the truck. No. Way. Nope. There were so many bad situations that came to mind with that scenario. We could not even pull the truck through and around the lot because we would have been stuck. I am so glad that my husband was driving this thing, as I would have gotten myself into quite a mess trying to back this thing into place. He ended up parking it almost at the street, just outside of the covered entrance. In the morning my son stopped traffic with his car as my husband backed out and I jumped in. It was not too much fun. However! The room itself was very nice. It was small, but very clean. There was a desk, fridge, microwave, full size iron with an ironing board, coffee maker and a hair dryer. They provided shampoo and bar soap. The shower head was huge, and the water pressure was great. My stars are for the room itself, and the location of the property. This location is great. It is right next door to a Chick-fil-a and a Dunkin' Donuts. There is also a Walgreens across the street, along with a gas station. read more

I'd first like to offer a disclaimer: you really have to rate this for what it is. It is a motel, and it will be held to a certain standard. Now, on a scale of 1-5 stars, 1 is immediately walk out, not even staying the night. 5 is outstanding, above and beyond motel standard. As far as the Pros: This has the availability of a motel, any wayward travelled can roll up and they will probably have room. The location is central, and a reasonable walk from historic downtown. Prices were reasonable, I booked the room for 2 nights, 3 days from the holiday weekend (availability!), at $115 a night, which is reasonable, what with it being short notice on top of a holiday weekend. The value is incredible. For my rate, I got a king sized bed where the nearby motel 6 would have given me a queen for twice the rate. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Tyler was a pleasure, and very available and accommodating. The appliances (fridge, microwave, television, outlets) are of good quality, and there are many channels on the tv, and plenty of outlets. This is most important to me. This place is clean. No bugs, no obvious stains or mold, crisp bedding. I didn't feel gross staying here. Some of the cons were: This is an older building, so some of the plaster was coming up in the very corner of the bathroom, there were small holes in the curtains from much wear over the years, the doors stuck a bit, especially in the bathroom. The bedding is also thin, no fluffy comforters or anything. Simply a fitted sheet, a top sheet, a thin, yet warm, blanket, and what looked like a decorative sheet. We were perfectly comfortable, but I'm a sucker for fluff. This may be a problem for some, but I wasn't terribly bothered. The continental breakfast is small; yogurt, cereal, coffee, etc. So, if you expect a larger spread, you may be disappointed. There wasn't a plastic protector curtain for the shower, and a small stain on the edge of the tub. The towels were a bit old and frayed at the edges. Some things you need to know before staying here: This lodging is big on conservation, especially of water. So, they will not replace your bedding or towels every day like other hotels. There will be a card by the bed that you have to place on the bed to have your sheets replaced. There will be a similar card letting you know to leave your towels on the floor to have them replaced, and to hang them up to keep them. They WILL clean your room daily, but they WILL NOT replace your linens unless you ask via the instructions on the cards. Additionally, aside from the bathroom, there are few wall outlets. All your available outlets will be in the lamp on the desk and on the sconces. All in all, as long as you know what to expect, you will enjoy your stay here. If you compare all your lodgings to Hilton's or Sheratons, you will be sorely disappointed. But, if you are looking for a clean, comfortable, and convenient place to rest your head, this is at the top end of its standard. read more

Stayed here for the second time. It is an older hotel that has clearly been renovated. They are dog friendly, which is a plus as we sometimes travel with our two little ones. The rooms are clean and it is located not too far from downtown. I have always found the staff to be really friendly and accommodating. We asked for a late check out so we could enjoy more of Flagstaff before heading back down into the Phoenix heat, and it was no problem. They charged me $25 extra which I felt was reasonable. Its nothing fancy but its clean. I will most definitely stay with them in the future when visiting the area. They rock! read more

Clearly, this room would not have been worth the $158 they were charging online (Saturday night), but since I used points, it was free and it was a smooth one night stay. This was actually the best rated of all the crappy hotels in Flagstaff of which there are many. The bed was a bit hard, so make sure you have a few drinks and pass out at night. The TV worked fine, the coffee and breakfast were terrible (go to Dunkin Donuts next door), but there was no noise from other rooms. Everyone knows the Econolodge is bare bones, but if you pay more than $79 on a weekend, you won't be getting your money's worth. read more

I didn't eat breakfast the next morning but that was for the only reason that I needed to be back on the road right away. The two ladies I spoke with were awesome. After being the only affordable hotel available for the holiday weekend at $132/night, it was great for us to sleep. It is a older hotel with some flaws. The site itself is fairly small. The room we were given had not been thoroughly cleaned as there was still trash in the fridge. After calling the front desk, 45 min later they came to clean it up. We have 2 dogs with us and there is a super small grass area for them to potty. The breakfast only consists of cereal, yougurt and mini muffins. Not a bad hotel if you just need somewhere to crash for a few hours. Definitely not on our list to return here in the future. read more

Management here is horrible. On the website they list the double queen room as being acceptable for 5 with a rollaway and even let you prebook the rollaway. LIES. The bed literally could not lay down anywhere in the room. The front desk agent Sierra was very kind throughout but when she called her manager they told us it was up to us to figure out and "people" put it between the queen beds. You can see the fantastic *eye roll* fit in the pictures. As a result we had to physically move the entire queen platform bed to make room to wedge it in. Who makes the customer move the large furniture in the hotel room? As a result the bed had to be against the heater because there was no where else for it to go. Super safe right? I'm sure the Fire Marshall would love to see that. In the process we lifted the mattress to the rollaway and saw that the bottom was very questionably held on by a single spring and the rest had torn. This is what the manager wanted my son to sleep on. I informed Sierra I wasn't comfortable with this rollaway and the fire danger with the heater. I showed her all the pictures attached so she could see exactly the issues I was having. I asked her to see if her manager could get us a second room at a discounted rate as a possible solution since the advertised room did not fit the number of people we booked for safely (and yes we listed all 5 in the booking). The manager would not discount a second room at all but Sierra was nice enough to let us know there was another row of rooms a foot wider and with newer rollaways on their row and got us moved there. This room did work much better, the rollaway did fit between the beds although it's not a twin size if that's what you're expecting. This room could at least safely sleep us all even if it left no walkway on the sides of the bed. These rooms are the only ones they should even consider allowing a rollaway. Most of town was booked so I was at the breakdown point because I couldn't just go somewhere else. I'm disgusted by the management of this hotel. The rooms themselves aren't bad, but rollaways should not be offered at this hotel at all and if they are the equipment they have should be maintained in a safe manner. We booked this hotel specifically because it was one of the few that offered a room for 5 through the choice hotel website. Most explicitly state that a rollaways are not an option and that is understandable. Management could have made this right by offering possible solutions at the first issue with the rollaway but instead decided customer service meant nothing to them. read more

This is an older facility but the rooms have been completely upgraded. And it is sparkingly clean. The staff could not be more accommodating and friendly. If there is a downside, it is the location on a very busy street and area and the noise level can be high however we were in the back section and, upon closing the door, we could hear nothing. Just another motel in Flagstaff, Econolodge does fine in its category, but not well enough to deserve the good reviews. The location is pretty good, with a number of food outlets nearby. The motel looks significantly nicer in the pictures than it actually is. Seems more old & worn out while you're there in person. The rooms are comfortable but not super clean. It felt as if housekeeping had done a halfhearted job since a few days, and there was dust accumulated on the furniture. The sheets had some spots as well, which was annoying. The front-desk staff is super-pleasant and helpful. This was much better than I expected at any hotel, much less Econolodge. They also include a basic breakfast which was alright, but the coffee is really really bad. I paid $80 for a weekday night, which felt more for a place like this. They claim they're in the top 3% of all Econolodges, but having stayed at a number of their motels, didn't seem the case. Overall, I'd recommend spending 20% more and getting a better & cleaner room at a nicer hotel. read more

Staff is extremely friendly. The hotel has been renovated so everything looks new and beautiful. Room was nice and clean. Bed is comfortable and there is a coffee maker, fridge and microwave in each room. As for the negatives: internet is slow at peak hours and breakfast is ok: there are two types of bread, muffins, cereal, some fruit and yogurt. No cheese, egg or meat, but it was good enough for me. Flagstaff is full of crapy old hotels but this one takes the cake. They charged us for two nights when we only stayed for one and the staff there, including the manager, is completely useless. They are not trying to make you a repeat customer because they know you won't come back after you see their rooms so they have no customer service. The continental breakfast is mini muffins, yogurt and juice. I don't know how but the whole room was damp. The "fresh" towels were moist and their AC pushed out air that smelled like mold. I don't know what renovations they did I because the AC and bathrooms were still old. But they did have new lamps... It's better than sleeping on the street but will work much harder to avoid in the future. read more

Only thing that Econo Lodge University has going for them is the front desk service. They were friendly and helpful. Had a situation where our room reeked of smoke and weed was found in the bedside table within the first few hours after check in. Finding the weed in the room made us feel like the cleaning staff are careless. This was a very pleasant stay. I wasn't expecting much because it isn't a fancy resort but rather a basic motel. However, it was very clean and has been updated. We were greeted by a friendly front desk and check in was simple. The location is very convenient and right next to many restaurants. It was a perfect one night stay on a snowy weekend that turned out to be a lot of fun. Very close drive to Lowell Observatory. I was happy with the price and we slept well. A lot of reviews said the breakfast was bad but for a free continental it was perfectly fine with cereal, toast, yogurt, fruit and instant oatmeal. Was perfect for us before we headed to the Lowell since we knew we would be hitting one of the local restaurants for lunch. We plan to stay here next time we visit the Lowell. read more

My family ended up staying here for 1 week and it was a decent place. It's pretty much a "you get what you pay for" kinda place. I am being a little biased because the week prior we were in a 3-bdrm suite in Las Vegas and the week before that we were at the Disneyland Hotel so to be fair I did come here slightly close-minded and a little spoiled I guess? Upon first glance, it is your typical roadside motel-ish type of place. There is a tiny pool in the middle of the parking lot in a gated area which serves its purpose and it was always kept clean and neat. The room was your basic studio with two queen sized beds a tiny bathroom and no closet (hence the 4-stars). On the plus side, there is a small microwave and refrigerator which not all places have. The rooms are cleaned/straightened out daily and re-stocked of any depleted toiletries and clean towels which is great. There is also free wifi and continental breakfast. My husband is the only one that has had to speak with the employees but they all seem to be really nice and accommodating. I will say that we did have an issue with our toilet but that they offered us another room a couple doors down so that they could fix it so that was awesome. If you're looking for a five-star resort this is not the place, but if you're looking for a decent clean place to lay down your head and grab a shower for a good price then I would recommend this place. read more

I really like the room. It was clean, close to many shops within walking distance, pet friendly and served breakfast from 6-9am. I would definitely recommend this to someone who has pets and wants a decent place to stay. The staff was helpful in locating a nice park to walk the dog at. The rooms were clean and the front desk staff was wonderful. My 3 star rating is only because I think it is a 2-3 star experience if you compare this motel to a 5 star experience. The only significant downside was that the beds were terribly uncomfortable. We likened it to sleeping on a piece of plywood on springs. Nobody slept very well. I am sick! I stayed at the Econo Lodge on October 20 2020. I was only in the room from 8pm till approx 7am. I got up several times because of a noise and when I turned on the light there was a RAT running around the room. I was terrified!!!! And sick. I thought I could feel something in my bed that night and it looked like RAT poop when I examined it. The guy at the desk came in and saw me trying to corner the RAT when it ran into the room next door. Hearing commotion earlier...I found out that the lady next to me had a RAT in her bed as well!!!! As the one in my room ran under the adjoining rooms she screamed as now she had two RATS in her room! I could not bear to stay and even brush my teeth ..later Econo Lodge refused to give either one of us a refund. Just is bad was the fact that the office offered me coffee when I went in there to explain what happened and I had diarrhea all day!! DON'T STAY THERE! IT'S A RATS NEST. Never again for me. Had an issue where the room wasn't cleaned for 2 days, had no toiletries, no towels, trash was full beds not dressed carpets not vacuumed, you get the picture..They don't care. Spoke to a night manager, manager in training and a facility cleaner, no one gave me towels or anything that was needed. Had to wait til the next morning at check out to get some clean towels and a bar of soap. Was told the Owner Mr Patel would call to discus, that was a joke, never happened. Please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, don't go through what I had to. Also read the other one and two stars they're spot on. Wish I looked before booking. read more

We were looking for an affordable place to stay in Flagstaff to get out of the heat of Scottsdale. You know, someplace to lay your head while you enjoyed a weekend of cooler temps. This Econo Lodge fits that bill perfectly! Recently totally remodeled so it is very clean and the furniture new. Wonderfully located close to historic downtown where one can spend the day in the cool outside air while dining or shopping. We will definitely return to this hotel. read more

We stayed here just a few nights ago. I selected this hotel because it appeared more modern, it was in a good location, and it was a great price compared to some of the nearby hotels. Oh and it had free breakfast! We had a pleasant stay. The staff was friendly, the room was very clean and it was obviously updated. The only negative was that the pillows sucked. Short and lumpy pillows are not comfortable. If you are going to stay here maybe bring your own pillow if you can. Otherwise I would recommend! read more

After about an hour researching motels in flagstaff for a cheap, but clean one to rest for a few hours, I found this one that had most reviews saying basic, not luxury but clean. That's fine. All I need is clean. We called at around midnight and the front desk lady was so nice and helpful (especially for being the graveyard shift - id be so over people!!) we got there around 1 am exhausted and she helped us out a lot. We just spent a week in Denver at a nice resort and this lady was 10x sweeter than anyone at that Marriott. We get into our room and it looks clean so we showered and got in bed. One thing I like to do at motels is make sure there aren't bed bugs that will bite me and travel home to infest my house. I looked behind the bed and see about 5 bed bugs that appear to be dead. we were so exhausted that when we saw they were dead we didn't even think it was worth it to switch rooms. However my boyfriend moves the bed and they all go crawling around!!! Literally my nightmare. They were in all corners of the box springs and who knows where else because we were so repulsed we called to tell the lady up front. She dealt with it so well, apologized a million times, offered to get us a new room and if we had any problems with that, she would refund us. She brought the keys personally to us, inspected the room with us, and even called 10 minutes after we were settled in our new room to say she automatically gave us late check out to sleep in (it was around 3 am at this point). She is the only reason this place gets 2 stars (she would get 100 stars herself). We had a horrible night sleep, itching constantly and in horror we would see another bedbug (there were signs of other ones in this room as well but we never saw an actual bug). Linens were also dirty in both rooms, filled with long dark hair (we are both blonde) and stains. Bed comforter, seriously, I do not think has been washed in forever. We threw it on the floor and slept with 1 sheet. We definitely will never be back. Spent $20 more and stay somewhere cleaner. Praying no bed bugs are traveling back with us!! read more

Upon check-in, the staff was really nice and the room was spacious and comfortable. However, there isn't a hot tub! Was so looking forward to having one to relax in, but wasn't a deal-breaker. great rates, pets are welcome and we were able to check in super super early with ease. the room was clean and even our first floor had a faux vaulted ceiling (there is a second level). our only complaint was the woman at the counter when we checked out. she was quite unfriendly. there was no coffee out with the breakfast in the morning and when asked if coffee was going to be available or if it was being made, she was unhelpful and after waiting 15 minutes for coffee we were told was being brewed, we walked out. it didn't seem like she had any intention to check for the coffee or refilling anything on the breakfast bar. the gentleman who checked us in the day before was extremely nice so it was odd to have such an opposite interaction the morning after. read more
