Blacksburg Animal Clinic - This is a transcript of how hateful DR Watson was with me. I'm on disability and refused to give my service dog her meds.

Blacksburg Animal Clinic

(8 reviews)

Very disappointing and unprofessional experience with Dr. Matthew Watson and the team at Blacksburg…read moreAnimal Clinic I brought my dog to Blacksburg Animal Clinic today for a scheduled veterinary appointment, and unfortunately, we were not even seen because of an issue involving a $300 balance that I believe should have been handled directly with the ASPCA. A few months ago, my cat had cancer and required surgery on his ears. The ASPCA in Roanoke agreed to pay the $300 balance, and I provided Blacksburg Animal Clinic with documentation stating that the ASPCA would be responsible for the payment. The front-office employee who was working that day was the same person I spoke with today. She had originally scanned the documentation into their system and also spoke directly with the ASPCA representative by phone while I was there picking up my cat after surgery. I was told the ASPCA would be sending the clinic a check in the mail. Today, before my dog's appointment, I was suddenly presented with a statement saying that I still owed the $300. I explained that the ASPCA had agreed to pay this amount and that I had already provided the clinic with documentation confirming that arrangement. At first, I was told they did not have the paperwork on file. Then, after I explained that I knew it had been scanned into their system, they acknowledged that they actually did have the documentation. I also explained that I am disabled, live on a fixed income, and simply cannot afford to pay an unexpected $300 balance that I was told the ASPCA was responsible for. I was not refusing to pay a legitimate bill; I was trying to understand why I was suddenly being held responsible for a balance that had already been arranged to be paid by another organization. While I was speaking with the front-office employee and trying to resolve the issue, Dr. Matthew Watson came out and asked, with what I felt was a very obvious attitude, "Are we still doing this?" referring to my dog's appointment. I told him that I was willing to proceed with my dog's appointment as long as I was not being made responsible for the $300 that the ASPCA had agreed to pay. I explained that I simply wanted the billing issue resolved and did not feel comfortable accepting responsibility for that amount. He then essentially told me that if I didn't like the situation, I should take my dog to another veterinarian. He opened the front door and told me to go to the other vet. I have never been treated this way at a veterinary clinic. I was not yelling, threatening anyone, or refusing to pay a legitimate bill. I was attempting to resolve a billing/documentation issue that appears to have resulted from the clinic's own failure to properly maintain or process the paperwork they had already received. What is especially upsetting is that I clearly explained that I am disabled and live on a fixed income. Instead of showing understanding or professionalism and trying to resolve the situation, I felt dismissed, embarrassed, and essentially pushed out of the clinic. I cannot speak to whether this legally constitutes disability discrimination, but I absolutely felt that my disability and financial circumstances were not treated with appropriate consideration. My concern is not simply the $300. It is the way this entire situation was handled. If the ASPCA payment had not arrived, the professional response should have been to contact the ASPCA, review the documentation, and work toward resolving the discrepancy--not confront me immediately before my dog's appointment and then have the veterinarian tell me to take my dog somewhere else. After being a client here, this experience has completely changed my opinion of this clinic. I will be taking my dog elsewhere. I hope management reviews what happened today, including the documentation regarding the ASPCA payment and how I was treated when I questioned the balance.

This new owner is very hateful. He has seen my service dog for over a year. Since he took…read moreownership, he said I was rude to the staff and argued over 80 cents. He also stated I'd have to go see another vet. This is all slandering and untrue. I was short 80 cents and was going to go to my car to get the 80 cents, but a wonderful staff member said she would take care of it. This Dr denied my prescription for my service dog because he said I was looking for a new clinic. Why in the world would I look for a new clinic until he denied me the prescription for my service dog. Yes, I said I would have to look for someone else if he refused to fill any medication for my service dog. I did have to take her to Mountain View Humane to get her spayed due to my disability and lack of income. I thought at one time Blacksburg Animal Clinic was the best! This is not the case after DR Watson bought the clinic. He actually spoke with me on the phone as well and was very hateful and domineering. I tried to explain and he said he would send my medical records to whoever I wanted, then blocked my number as I only had a few hours to choose a new vet. I then emailed him to try to explain because he wouldn't give me a chance to speak on the phone when he called back. I said I'd have no choice to report him to the state board and DCA. He just gave me a hateful answer and then proceeded to tell me to do as I see fit. It's like he doesn't care! Who wants a vet like this?

The day of the appt I walked in and was greeted with a stagnant, "who do we have?" as a response to my "good morning! How are you?" Any questions I had were responded to with irritation and I was told to "just wait over there, they'll get you when they're ready." The vet tech I had interaction with was amazing, friendly, knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. The vet wasn't the most personable person, but he wasn't rude either. He did answer my questions, but I feel like he barely looked at my puppy, and then we were charged $160 for a visit. My husband took our puppy back yesterday to get a shot - he was also given meds for diarrhea (which we had brought in a stool sample that was CLEARLY not diarrhea) - confused he asked the front desk why he was prescribed that med if the stool sample wasn't loose - the person at the front says "oh. you can refuse it if you want..." He refused and the bill dropped $55. Needless to say, we will not be back and we will be finding another vet. It's a shame because it is close to home. But I am sure we will find better elsewhere.

I was so impressed with this Veterinary office. My 13yr old dog was having some stomach issues…read more She's not the friendliest dog. She gets nervous easy and so starts to bark. She sounds and looks scary, which makes most people tense up and that makes the situation worse. This usually happens even at vets offices. But for the first time in her long life she was made to feel comfortable at a vet office! Both the vet tech (so sorry I don't remember her name - she was WONDERFUL) and Dr. Lynn were so good with her. The got down on here level, approached from the side (something we will advise others to try going forward) and were patient and gave her treats. After just a little bit of working with and on her, my nervous dog happily left the exam room WITH Dr. Lynn without even looking back at us. I've NEVER seen her do that ... even with people she knows. Now for the important stuff. Her stomach is better. They did testing, but before getting all of the results gave me some things and suggestions to help her at home. And it all worked wonderfully. She's gaining weight again. Her stomach is good. She sleeps through the night again. AND as an added bonus, after months of trying everything under the sun they also gave me a solution to the fleas that actually worked! Which is a huge relief for us and the dog. Love this place. Prices weren't the cheapest but very reasonable for all they did.
