Came here for a second opinion based on reviews. The staff is very friendly and the vet took her time to review old records and give us options.

This is long, however, worth reading…read more I want to start by saying everyone here is extremely friendly. We have taken multiple animals here over the years and always had pleasant experiences. That being said, whenever we are there and there is an issue, I never feel we get clear guidance on what to do. It almost always seems like it's a list of things we can do and let us choose rather than professional recommendations. Almost like, how much money are you willing to spend while you take shots at fixing this? This really came to a head here recently when I feel diagnosing our puppy with kidney disease was poorly handled and almost mishandled in my opinion which has resulted in a 1.5 year dog having stage three kidney failure. After years of only having one dog, we decided to finally get another and we went and got an 8 week old Dalmatian puppy. Immediately we realized that he would not stop drinking water (to the point he would throw up) and had more frequent than normal accidents in the house. When bringing this up, we were told that they could do a blood test, however, he is too young to have kidney issues and it is most likely a disorder that makes him obsessed with water and he will grow out of it. We continued to bring this up on every visit and were told to limit his water and he would grow out of it. Finally, when we came in and he was around 1.5 years old, they decided to do blood work and found out he was in stage 3 kidney failure. They recommended an ultrasound and sterile urine sample which we did. Based on the findings they said he should immediately be put on antibiotics because something they found points to a possible infection and we were prescribed over $100 in antibiotics. It was also determined his bladder wasn't normal size and things seen on the kidneys point to issues. We were told time is of the essence and we had to get him on the antibiotics. They said special kidney food was important but never made it seem urgent. If they had, they would have tried to send it home with us that day. A couple days later they called and let us know an infection was not an underlying issue. Honestly, it seriously felt like it was about the money and not properly treating our dog. They then sent a referral to go to Virginia Tech to see a specialist. Virginia Tech would not be able to get us in until 9/25. Months later. This is where I really start to get aggravated. They claim every second matters but recommend us to a place that can't get us in for months. Luckily my wife knows a veterinarian and they refer us to a Specialist who is in Vinton and was an Internist/Professor at VT for over 20 years. He got us in the following week. Why in the world would Roanoke Animal Hospital not have referred us to him? There is absolutely no way they didn't know about him. Unfortunately, he did confirm Stage 3 Kidney failure and gave us some recommendations. One thing he said was that no matter what, we have to let him drink as much water as he wants. If not, it can start to cause issues with his organs. Because we do not have bloodwork from when Pongo was a puppy, I have not clue if he has always been in Stage 3 Kidney failure. That being said, what if he WASN'T? What if they had recommended we do blood work and we found out what was going on early and immediately did stuff to slow down the progression? How much damage has limiting his water for 1.5 years at the direction of the Vet done? Now my family has to deal with the fact that the puppy we love might only be alive until he is 3 or so. The ball was dropped. And I hope this really makes Roanoke Animal Hospital rethink things and take a much more proactive approach to stuff. Nothing can fix this, however, I hope this prevents another family from having to deal with the same heartbreak.

While…read moreother vets diagnosed her and ruled out other things (like cancer), nobody had a treatment plan for her, only acute, reactionary procedures. Dr. Quatmann was highly recommend to me by *three* different friends, so I was curious to see if a holistic vet could help me. I'll be honest- I didn't know what to expect. I saw Chinese medicine and acupressure on the website and wondered if I was gonna be taken for a ride. But my experience with Dr. Quatmann was hands-down the best vet experience I've had, with any animal, in 41 years. She started by sitting on the floor on the opposite side of the room from my stressed-out pup, talking to me about her symptoms and taking notes, letting my dog go at her own pace. When she conducted a physical exam, she had me hand my dog over, back end first, so that it didn't look like she was looming (brilliant!) and although my pup was nervous at first, she eventually relaxed into Dr. Quatmann's capable hands. At every step of the way, Dr. Quatmann told me what she was doing and why. She told me what she liked and didn't like about Chinese medicine and Western medicine approaches, and was approachable, intelligent, and kind despite me struggling to keep up. Toward the end, she let my dog "shop" by picking up whatever supplements she felt drawn to (all at 'sniff level'). My dog really got into it! I've never seen her engaged in her environment like that, and it was delightful. In the end, we went with one supplement (wanting to address each symptom individually), which my dog loves taking (truly...she thinks it's a treat). I've already seen improvement! Overall, this was a great experience and I highly recommend this vet practice (though be careful with the parking lot, which is a bit tight).

Wally got sick over the weekend and had to see the emergency vet in Roanoke on Saturday. He seemed to have a UTI for which he was given an antibiotic. Today, Monday, he became extremely sick with both vomiting and diarrhea. When I called his vet they refused see him or even give me advice. They told me to call the emergency vet back. His doctor's refused him when he was extremely sick. If it'd been anything non emergency I would certainly have understood. We will never go back.

I brought my cat in because her feline hyperesthesia had recently worsened and I was hoping to receive guidance on how to help her. Unfortunately, I left the appointment feeling frustrated, uncomfortable and shamed rather than supported. During the visit, the provider made harsh weight-related comments about my cat without offering any explanation of body condition score or any type of weight-loss plan/foods. I was told she should weigh 11 pounds specifically even though she currently weighs 17 pounds and is clearly a large-framed cat. The way this was communicated felt shaming and judgmental rather than constructive. When discussing feline hyperesthesia, the provider told me this diagnosis is strictly psychological. It is multifactorial and saying it's only psychological is an oversimplification. My cat was taken to the back for bloodwork and returned with treat paste all over her face and neck. She has never eaten one of those treats when offered and normally goes so far as to gag when sniffing them. Her entire hind end was also drenched in rubbing alcohol. She remained visibly upset for the rest of the day. I feel guilty for subjecting her to a place that was supposed to be safe and helpful. Since this visit, I have spoken with other pet owners who have said they transferred away from this clinic because of similar experiences. Pet owners seeking help for their animals deserve supportive communication and clear medical guidance. I will be immediately switching to another veterinarian.

My primary care provider actually recommended adopting a cat to help manage my anxiety, and my cat has truly been a source of comfort for me. Unfortunately, a recent visit to AoA was extremely distressing. During the visit, a staff member accidentally dropped my cat's carrier, causing it to crack open. My cat escaped and ran down an embankment, eventually hiding along the side of the building. The staff member attributed the incident to a "faulty carrier," though the situation could have been avoided with more care. While several staff members and patrons assisted in trying to recover my cat, the situation escalated further when a dog attacked one of the staff members during the rescue attempt. Thankfully, with the help of other patrons, I was eventually able to recover my cat. The entire experience was frightening and emotionally overwhelming. What made this worse was how the situation was handled afterward. Despite everything that occurred, AoA attempted to charge me $30 for the visit. When I asked the Practice Manager, Allyson Joyce, whether I could be made whole given what had just happened, I was accused of trying to get a "free" visit. I was also told not to return. During this exchange, Ms. Joyce stated, "I bought my dogs," even though I do not own any dogs. When I later contacted the Director, Lisa O'Neill, I was met with the same accusation. I made it clear to both individuals that I do not have dogs and expressed concern over being misidentified and blamed in a situation where I had done nothing wrong. Instead of accountability or compassion following a traumatic incident, I felt dismissed and scapegoated. I adopted my cat from AoA with gratitude and good intentions, but this experience left me deeply disappointed. I believe organizations like this should prioritize safety, empathy, and accountability--especially when a pet owner and animal are put at risk. I'm sharing this review to keep the community informed and to encourage better practices in the future.

I was told I was not allowed to go into the exam room with her and I was not able to speak with the actual vet at all. I have no idea who was with my cat or where she went which I am not 100% comfortable with. I knew she would likely have to get a dental done because her teeth weren't looking great. A girl with a clipboard said they require blood work 2 weeks before the exam and I said ok but then came back and said I could do it right that second and be in the next week or else I'd have to wait until July. I asked if I could get a price estimate because they aren't cheap. They gave me a range of $300-$1200 and could not narrow it down at all. I asked if I could have a minute to consider it and figure out how to pay for everything and she said yes but came back within 2 minutes and told me I had to make my choice. They do not offer payment plans and they don't take pet insurance. I agreed to have it done because it seemed like I didn't really have another choice. Day of, I dropped my cat off for her dental at 8 am (drop off is between 7:30 and 8:30) and they told me to come back around 5 and that she would probably be done earlier. I got there at 5:15 and my cat was not done. They bring all of the cats into the waiting room and put them on a shelf or on the floor in carriers next to each other. From what I overheard most of them were feral/ strays that had been dropped off for spay/neuters and then would be picked up again. My cat has lived indoors her entire life and has not been around others and I don't love that they just put them all together within sneezing and touching distance. That didn't even really matter though because she was not ready until after 6, so I waited an extra hour on top of driving 45 minutes there. When she was finally brought out to me, I still had to wait for them to finish doing all of the paperwork, to pay, and to get her medications and aftercare instructions. Then they told me the price which was fair. They trimmed her nails and did a more thorough exam while she was under which was nice. They gave me 2 medications but did not tell me how to give them to her or when and told me to read the instructions in the box which are not the most straightforward. When I got in the car I looked more closely at my cat and her neck and face were wet and there was blood on her chest. It would have been nice for them to have cleaned that off during the 10 hours that they had her. I appreciate that they're a charity and they do a lot of good for the community but overall it just was not a good experience for me and I have no idea how my cat was treated at any point. I cannot say that I recommend this place or will be coming back and it might be worth it to just pay a little more taking your pets somewhere else for yours and their sake.

It might be practical have everyone on a harness or in a carrier to prevent the hair everywhere and potential fights. The cats have another room in the back I didn't notice the sign the first time. They do charge an extra fee for same day appointments so I recommend booking ahead or calling and speaking to someone if you must be seen urgently. The vet was very nice and transparent. They did have to take the cat to another room where I could not accompany. I had to sit on hair covered bench while waiting. After all that was said and done. I had no idea pet vet care was so expensive. She's not my kitty but I would do anything for her and it broke my heart seeing her sick. I would bring her back. Overall score js 4.5 because of the doors and hair. I do realize that it's impossible to have it spotless with countless animals but there was no effort while I was there to clean after groups were in the lobby and the room had not been cleaned prior to us going in. My only option was to clean off the bench myself shifting the hair to the floor or sitting on/beside it. I would have swept myself if given the option.
