On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, I took my cat to the Main Street Veterinary Clinic because of my concern…read morethat he was having increasing difficulty eating and retaining food. Dr. Schindler examined him and concluded that the problem was likely his age (nearly 17 years old). She offered blood work to identify any problem(s). I stated that costly blood work would not be beneficial (given the cat's age) and because I did not want an intrusive intervention; I was solely interested in providing comfort, if possible. The doctor suggested Cerenia would calm the cat's stomach. I (mistakenly) agreed to purchase it. The doctor also informed me that the cat's next Rabies shot would be due in October and asked if I would like her to receive it during this visit. I first replied that I was not concerned about Rabies because my cat was declawed and was not allowed outside. She replied Rabies shots are required by law. I thought to myself that, since the cat has not had a visible reaction to prior Rabies shots in the past, he would be OK this time as well. He was given the vaccination, paid and left. Upon getting home, I looked inside the Cerenia box and found only four doses. This was unsatisfactory because the cat regurgitates his meals several times a week and, at approximately $9.00 per pill, I could not possibly afford this medicine. I called the Main Street Clinic and made arrangements to return the pills. I asked for a cheaper treatment and was told there was no effective alternative. I have since learned that another cheaper option for some pets is probiotics. Shortly after getting home, my cat started regurgitating repeatedly, vomiting all the solids in his intestinal tract, and then foaming. At first, the foam was white, then pink, then I realized it was bloody. Initially, I did not understand how sick he was, but as the day went on, the cat visibly declined. He would not eat his scheduled meal and he just lay in a heap. This continued into the evening. The next morning he declined further and I called the Main Street Clinic to report that I feared my cat was dying and thought the vaccination might have brought it on. The receptionist called Dr. Schindler. She agreed that was a possibility and advised me to bring the cat to the clinic to receive fluids to ease his passing, do blood work, and (if he continued to decline), euthanize him. I asked the doctor why she was suggesting blood work. I asked again what would be the benefit for the cat from blood work, but received no answer. That completed the conversation. Fortunately, my cat has not died. It has now been over a week since our visit to the clinic and he is himself again: alert, even playful at times, and loving. This experience with Main Street Veterinary Clinic was horrific. The visit made my cat much sicker (not better). Dr. Schindler did inform me of the possibility of an adverse reaction to the vaccination, but I thought naively that if my cat had not had a negative reaction over the past 17 years that was not an issue. I regret that the doctor did not suggest I wait for Licorice's scheduled vaccination in October. I do not understand why the doctor even brought the vaccination up and risked putting an old, sick cat in jeopardy. When I later spoke to her indirectly on the phone, through the receptionist, she said that the cat was close to dying and the vaccine had likely hastened his passing. I thought this callous. I did not bring Licorice to the Clinic to hasten a painful death. Nor do I understand why a licensed veterinarian would advise me to do blood work on a dying pet. Certainly, it would not prolong his life or make his passing more comfortable. I believe that Dr. Schindler acted unethically by suggesting that what appeared to be a dying cat get an early rabies vaccination (even though she thought it could make him sicker) and suggesting blood work (not only during the clinic visit but a second time when we both thought that death was imminent). Cats dying from old age need neither vaccinations nor blood work.

It only took about 10 minutes to fill out the new patient form and once brought back to an appointment room Dr. Jones came in quickly. Dr. Jones himself is very nice. The bill was around $60 for some eye drops and a consultation, which isn't the cheapest ever, but nothing outrageous.

This is not the case after DR Watson bought the clinic. He actually spoke with me on the phone as well and was very hateful and domineering. I tried to explain and he said he would send my medical records to whoever I wanted, then blocked my number as I only had a few hours to choose a new vet. I then emailed him to try to explain because he wouldn't give me a chance to speak on the phone when he called back. I said I'd have no choice to report him to the state board and DCA. The level of force used felt excessive given that his anxiety and reactivity had been clearly communicated. I had to intervene and remove my dog from the situation. She sounds and looks scary, which makes most people tense up and that makes the situation worse. This usually happens even at vets offices. But for the first time in her long life she was made to feel comfortable at a vet office! Both the vet tech (so sorry I don't remember her name - she was WONDERFUL) and Dr. Lynn were so good with her. The got down on here level, approached from the side (something we will advise others to try going forward) and were patient and gave her treats. After just a little bit of working with and on her, my nervous dog happily left the exam room WITH Dr. Lynn without even looking back at us. I've NEVER seen her do that ... even with people she knows. Now for the important stuff. Her stomach is better. They did testing, but before getting all of the results gave me some things and suggestions to help her at home. And it all worked wonderfully. She's gaining weight again. Her stomach is good. She sleeps through the night again. AND as an added bonus, after months of trying everything under the sun they also gave me a solution to the fleas that actually worked! This is long, however, worth reading…read more I want to start by saying everyone here is extremely friendly. We have taken multiple animals here over the years and always had pleasant experiences. That being said, whenever we are there and there is an issue, I never feel we get clear guidance on what to do. It almost always seems like it's a list of things we can do and let us choose rather than professional recommendations. Almost like, how much money are you willing to spend while you take shots at fixing this? This really came to a head here recently when I feel diagnosing our puppy with kidney disease was poorly handled and almost mishandled in my opinion which has resulted in a 1.5 year dog having stage three kidney failure. After years of only having one dog, we decided to finally get another and we went and got an 8 week old Dalmatian puppy. Immediately we realized that he would not stop drinking water (to the point he would throw up) and had more frequent than normal accidents in the house. When bringing this up, we were told that they could do a blood test, however, he is too young to have kidney issues and it is most likely a disorder that makes him obsessed with water and he will grow out of it. We continued to bring this up on every visit and were told to limit his water and he would grow out of it. Finally, when we came in and he was around 1.5 years old, they decided to do blood work and found out he was in stage 3 kidney failure. They recommended an ultrasound and sterile urine sample which we did. Based on the findings they said he should immediately be put on antibiotics because something they found points to a possible infection and we were prescribed over $100 in antibiotics. It was also determined his bladder wasn't normal size and things seen on the kidneys point to issues. We were told time is of the essence and we had to get him on the antibiotics. They said special kidney food was important but never made it seem urgent. If they had, they would have tried to send it home with us that day. A couple days later they called and let us know an infection was not an underlying issue. Honestly, it seriously felt like it was about the money and not properly treating our dog. They then sent a referral to go to Virginia Tech to see a specialist. Virginia Tech would not be able to get us in until 9/25. Months later. This is where I really start to get aggravated. They claim every second matters but recommend us to a place that can't get us in for months. Luckily my wife knows a veterinarian and they refer us to a Specialist who is in Vinton and was an Internist/Professor at VT for over 20 years. He got us in the following week. Why in the world would Roanoke Animal Hospital not have referred us to him? There is absolutely no way they didn't know about him. Unfortunately, he did confirm Stage 3 Kidney failure and gave us some recommendations. One thing he said was that no matter what, we have to let him drink as much water as he wants. If not, it can start to cause issues with his organs. Because we do not have bloodwork from when Pongo was a puppy, I have not clue if he has always been in Stage 3 Kidney failure. That being said, what if he WASN'T? What if they had recommended we do blood work and we found out what was going on early and immediately did stuff to slow down the progression? How much damage has limiting his water for 1.5 years at the direction of the Vet done? Now my family has to deal with the fact that the puppy we love might only be alive until he is 3 or so. The ball was dropped. And I hope this really makes Roanoke Animal Hospital rethink things and take a much more proactive approach to stuff. Nothing can fix this, however, I hope this prevents another family from having to deal with the same heartbreak.

A few months later she showed up with a litter of kittens and said, "you've been feeding me, will you feed my babies "? We helped her wean her litter and she began to let us pet her...if she felt like not hissing at us. I called every veterinarian office in the area and this was the first group I found that was willing to handle ferals. It took several months to trap some of the cats but we were determined to get everyone spayed/neutered before we ended up with another litter. Foothills was great to work with and very understanding when I had to cancel an appointment on short notice because we were able to catch a cat. We actually had to trap 3 of them that were too feral at the time to handle. Today I was back with my alpha male. Although he's been neutered he frequently gets into cat fights as he insures that no other cats move into his territory. Fortunately he is no longer feral and easy to handle. The vet always discusses treatment options and takes time to answer questions. The staff here is also extremely nice and great to work with. I trust them totally with my fur babies.
