I have a few things to say about this place. The website is awesome! The daily updates and current product updates are a super neat feature. The staff via Phone is friendly and helpful. I made a visit into the store to checkout some speakers that peaked my interest. The staff was inviting, non pushy, helpful, informative and they even encouraged me to crank the speakers up a bit. The selection of products are great too ranging from high end stuff I can't afford to entry level audiophile. I found my shop. I look forward to doing business with them in the future. read more

On 5/18, I went into Echo Audio to fit a cartridge to my Kenwood KD-500 turntable. This thing is in pretty good shape. The Grace G-840 arm required a minor repair with the anti-skate clamp which I did in like 10min. The salesman literally scoffed at my turntable. He told me no decent cartridge will help it and pretentiously questioned what system I had at home. I replied I have 'systems' and why does it matter? I told him this same exact KD-500 is for sale at Fred's Sound of Music for a substantial amount. Yes I took his condescending attitude personally. This unit was given to me from a very close friend of mine who is very sick. I treasure this turntable and for the salesman to tell me, "You'll be back selling it to us for $100," I was appalled. You know what man? Screw you. Maybe you should try to be a little more personable and not look down your nose at folks. Not everyone can afford a $3500 turntable with a $1200 cartridge and $5000 speakers. Music is more than what system you play it through-- it's about the human experience. I know because I've been a musician for 25 years. This will be the last time I shop at Echo Audio. You got 2 starts for that. I hope the salesman reads this and groks the hurtfulness of his actions. It was my first time in a true hifi shop, so I was a little nervous walking in. All the employees were incredibly friendly and really made me feel comfortable trying out the equipment, with one employee saying "Go ahead, try anything you'd like, even the expensive stuff you can't afford" They'll stream music to any set of headphones you'd like to hear, and have an excellent selection in the store. When I'm ready to pick up a high dollar pair of cans, I know I'll be buying them here. read more

Greg was AWESOME. Very knowledgeable and he answered all my questions and helped me choose the right head phones. What I really appreciated is they take pride in what they do. Greg was upfront and honest about what would be the best fit for me with what I was looking for and didn't just try to sell me a pair a headphones to make a quick buck. Great store! So many interesting things to drool over. Take a break from over-researching and purchasing online and go talk to a human and listen to the components, it's great! They have all ranges of audio equipment, so don't be intimidated by the $10k McIntosh amp. I just wanted a pair of good sub-$300 speakers for my TV setup. I went in thinking the Elan B6 were for me, but after listening and discussing my needs with them, I went with the KEF Q100s. Kurt and his staff are incredibly knowledgable, helpful and friendly. I have purchased a turntable, phono preamp, speakers and amplifier from them over the past year or so, and have been more than pleased with the service and quality of the experience. The team at Echo responds to customer service inquires promptly, and were more than happy to align my cart on my new table for me when I realized it was misaligned from the factory shortly after purchasing. They have a large array of headphones you can demo, as well as speakers, power amps, headphone amps, turntables, and DACs out on the floor to listen to and check out. When I am looking to add another set of headphones to my collection, Echo will be the place I go. Before adding new speakers and an amp to my setup, the staff was more than happy to connect the same model of turntable and phono preamp I already had to multiple sets of speakers and amps in the store in order to demo what my actual setup would potentially sound like. An added bonus is that they have their stock listed on their website as well, so you know a bit more about what you're getting into before heading over. My 20+ year old Hafler 100W/channel amplifier finally died. It was a piece modified by the late Dave Herren of Audio Alternative in Beaverton and was a key component in my home music system (K-Horns,C-J pre-amp, etc.) I was very concerned that the sound I'd grown accustomed to and love was gone forever. Echo Audio repaired it quickly and inexpensively....and it sounds as good as ever (2 output transistors had failed). I've been a customer for over 10 years, have bought and traded gear there, and am once again reminded how lucky we are to have such a great organization to go to in times of audio distress! All-around fantastic experience. I wanted to purchase a turntable as gift for my boyfriend's birthday. I don't know a lot, but I did research online and landed on the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. I saw on Echo's website that they were in stock, and Echo's customer service has great reviews. I wasn't looking for someone to upsell me or talk down to me, so i was relieved when I called Echo and they agreed with my decision and told me it was a great choice. I purchased over the phone and we came by later that week to pick it up. Greg took the time to talk him through it, showed him how to set it up, and demo'ed options for pre-amp, amp, etc. While I have no clue what most of it means, I felt Greg was super helpful, encouraging, and honest. Found a vintage Kyocera receiver on their web site and called to see if they could hold it till I was able to get into Portland the next day. The salesman said they would hold it for two days. Got to their store early next morning and a salesperson set the receiver up with speakers so I could hear it play, as well as connected a turntable so I could check out the phono preamp. Everything worked and it came with a 90 warranty, so how could I complain? Since... have got it hooked up to my equipment and it performs admirably with my turntable, FM antenna and streaming audio DAC. Amazing store selling new and used audio equipment, with a serviceable web site to check on quality used equipment. I highly recommend. read more

Nice store, nice equipment, average prices on the equipment. People are usually friendly and helpful, but not pushy. My first purchase was headphones (Senn's), then came the replacement turntable (Pro-Ject), and then a pre-amplifier (parasound). Soon a replacement amplifier will be on the list and I'll be returning for speakers when the savings fattens up a little bit. The only improvement would be listening rooms (but this place is a little cramped for space) and really can't do much on the mess that is downtown parking. Good store - keep it up please! read more

First the good: These guys were able to repair my JVC Direct Drive turntable, so that I can continue to enjoy the many vinyl albums I have in my collection. The turntable is functioning perfectly and is running just like new. Now the bad: When I called Echo Audio and explained what I had and how it was failing, I was told the cost to have the turntable looked at would be $40.00, but that it might only be $30.00. I thought that it was a bit odd to quote the two different prices, but because of all the good reviews on Yelp! I decided to have the repair completed by them. When I took the turntable into the store I was told that it would be $50.00 the have it checked out. I told the person "helping" me what the person on the phone had told me, and he said "I don't know why they told you that, it's $50.00", he further said it would take quite a while since they were very backed up with repairs. After many weeks I received an e-mail telling me that the turntable needed quite a bit of repair and that the total would be $147.00. The cost to replace the turntable would have been right around $150.00, and since I was already into the repair for $50.00 i told them to go ahead. Within the next fifteen minutes I received another e-mail telling me the turntable would be ready the next day. When I finally went to pick up my turntable I asked what had been the problem and what had been repaired or replaced. I was told the technician did not make any notes so no one knew what had needed repair or replacement. In my mind there really should be that many parts to a direct drive turntable, so I just wanted to know what I had spent my $147.00 on, but that was not to be. I know that Echo Audio is in a niche area of retail and service, and that the choices are few for the products and services they provide, but does that mean that can provide minimal customer service? I wish the first person I talked with on the phone had been more accurate and correct on his quoting of pricing and i wish that they would give me detailed information on what I spent my money on. Alright, I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but enough days have passed to safely say they have failed in my book. So here's the story: I decided that my two channel system could use a little more punch, and thought adding a sub to it might be a good idea. So I started searching for Portland area audio places and found Echo. I love used audio places and this particular one seemed to have some awesome deals. In my browsing of their website I found a pair of speakers that I had demo'd years ago that had really impressed me but at the time were out of my price range. Here they were on Echo's website at a fantastic price. The only problem was they were full of quirk, apparently the manufacturer who also makes amps didn't built the crossover in the speakers, but instead in their proprietary amps. Well obviously I have no designs on a total system change, just maybe upgrading speakers. So I email Echo about the speakers and they responded back fairly promptly saying that it could probably work with my system with an external crossover that could probably be custom made. Sounded like a bit of work, but for that price I was definitely interested. So I decided to go in. Upon arriving at the store there were two employees and one other customer inside. Audiophiles tend to be longwinded, and this customer was no exception. So I browsed their inventory while I waited for them to finish up their exchange. Once that guy left you would have thought we might have been greeted and asked if we needed any help. Nope. Not a single word. The employees carried on a conversation for awhile, one of them finally leaving. So now there is one guy left at the desk, and my wife and I. The guy at the desk continues typing away at his computer, and then picks up the phone and makes a call. Finally he hangs up, and then continues to ignore us for awhile longer. I was about to just walk out, but the speakers were there just staring at me in their glory. So I approach the guy and asked if he could talk to me about them. The rest of the exchange was fine, once he started talking to me about the speakers he was plenty nice. Unfortunately he didn't give me much information on how I could go about buying these and getting them to work with my system. All I got was an in person explanation of what had already been told to me via email. He said the owner hadn't decided what they wanted to do with the speakers. I'm assuming by owner he meant, owner of the store. So I left all of my contact information with him (which they already had via email), and asked that someone contact me so we could figure it out. Obviously I wasn't going to buy the speakers if they wouldn't work for me, but I definitely would if they could help with the crossover dilemma. That was about a week ago and I still haven't heard anything. So maybe if I ever hear back from them I'll revise this review a couple of stars, but Echo made a lousy first impression. The store has a great inventory and really reasonable prices, but apparently they aren't that interested in closing a sale or engaging a customer. read more

Echoes of Old Portland! I discovered this place through a friend's recommendation and had a great experience. They hooked me up with a high-quality, beautiful vintage receiver and an excellent set of speakers that were priced incredibly well (literally $200 under the lowest price I was able to find online). The reason I'm writing this review is due to their truly stellar customer service. I don't know anything about stereo equipment... I only know how I like music to sound (warm and familiar). All of the guys who helped me were knowledgable, kind, patient with my silly questions about how to connect wires to components, and seemed genuine in their desire to help me find exactly what I was looking for. I first came here 4 yrs ago, with my first real job and my first real apartment. I didn't know anything about home hifi, but wanted to buy something that would allow me to hear my flat screen TV when the laundry machine was running in my 1 BR apartment. I showed up right as the shop opened, and Kurt listened to what I wanted, and pointed me to a pair of good looking speakers (again, I didn't know anything about hifi). They were reasonably priced, I guess, and Kurt let me listen to them for about an hour, during which time he turned down multiple people who wanted to buy those speakers. He then showed me some receivers, and helped me put together a system. I thought I wanted a subwoofer, bc every 29 yr old male wants a subwoofer, and he refused to sell me one because I wouldn't "need it". That sealed the deal for me. He loaded the speakers, receiver and cables into my car, and told me to call if I needed help. I show up again 2 years later to get headphones, and Kurt remembers my name, my car, and the system I bought. I was blown away by this, bc who cares enough about their customers to remember these details? Two more years go by. I buy a house. I want my dream hifi system, price be damned. Kurt helps me build an incredible system, at a very reasonable cost, provides amazing support to help get it set up, and wants to come by and listen to it. I challenge you to find any other store that cares this much about their clients. I'm a customer for life. read more

I needed a new set of headphones for work and so I did some online research and thought I knew exactly what I wanted. Ordinarily, I would have clicked the "Add to Cart" button, but based on a recommendation from a coworker, I decided to head over to Echo Audio for a listen first. I'm so glad I did! The headphones I was researching online sounded great but turned out to be a little too heavy for everyday wear. Thanks to some excellent customer service (hi Greg!), I was able to try out another model instead and--BAM!--perfect sound/price balance. Stores like Echo Audio make shopping for better sound a real joy. Service is superb - Kurt will steer you in the right direction. You get to relax and test your gear of interest for as long as you need, and the selection is outstanding. Lots of new and used equipment. Putting together a great-sounding system isn't always easy, but these guys can remove some of the hurdles. Prices are very good too. Highly recommended. I would suggest favoring a during the week visit if you want to avoid waiting, and also to get a decent parking spot. read more

Great service! I had recently purchased a turntable and set it up for my Sonos system. It sounded terrible. I tried to troubleshoot on my own, but to no avail. Took it to Echo and Kyle immediately figured out I hadn't installed the counterweight properly and fixed the problem. When "do it yourself" doesn't work, Echo is the place to go! these guys are GREAT! The stuff they carry is top notch and the price is right. They are beyond helpful and really make sure that the customer is always satisfied. I have bought speakers, amps, record players, headphones and other equipment from Echo and have never been disappointed. A few years ago when i was doing an entire stereo upgrade they made sure i had everything dialed in to get the most bang for my buck. They had also recommended that to really make my system complete that i should try to find a vintage Marantz receiver, which they didn't have any in stock and certainly could have convinced me to buy something that was on their shelf but didn't. I found a Marantz that needed a bit of work and they fixed it up for really inexpensive. Their dedication to quality and customer service can't be surpassed. I'd recommend Echo to anyone. Bought a Classe preamp from Echo through the internet. Kurt and Matt who were my main contacts, are as honest as they get. The gear was advertised accurately, priced fairly, tested and packed safely so it would arrive in one piece. They did all they said they would do. I could not be more pleased with the transaction and the addition of this preamp in my system. They are also very fair in offers to buy used gear. I went to Echo Audio quite a few times while I was getting an old technics turntable in working order. When a complete novice goes into an audiophile store they kind of already expect a certain level of snobbery and pretense when they walk through the door, but I was very pleased with the people at Echo. The staff there was extremely knowledgeable, polite and helpful. There was even a time when I went in there to buy a new cartridge for my turntable and they told me that all I really needed was an inexpensive stylus (much less expensive than a new cartridge). I really appreciate honesty like that. I will continue to turn to Echo Audio for my home audio needs. read more
