Thanks for letting me try an SE

Lemme start off and tell ya I still got Players' Anxiety in a guitar store after (almost) 20 years of playing. You just go blank. It's like when you're minding your business with an instrument and someone comes to you and says "play something". That's why you always remember your Oasis chords and bring a capo to a house party. I didn't feel any of that here though when I dropped in to spend some time with a Silver Sky SE. I was showed to a small amp room and even encouraged to crank up the volume for the test. I appreciated the friendly help and spent a good hour in the showroom. I will probably drop by again on my next annual PDX trip. (it's exp G7th capo time baybehhhh)

I've now bought two guitars from five star and have also paid for 3 guitars being set up. not only is the store fun to visit but the staff are friendly, informed, and also mellow. I love this store and they will continue to have me as a customer.

I had been shopping for 2 days for a new guitar. After a terrible Guitar Center experience I decided to visit these guys. I live in Vancouver so the store is out of the way, but it was well worth it. When I went in immediately I was greeted by staff. I didn't want to annoy the busy staff, but they were happy to give me recommendations based on my extremely specific needs. I told him what guitars I liked, what I didn't and he 3 different staff members all gave great recommendations. They even hooked me up to the amp I have at home so I can really experience how it sounds. Every guitar is setup by their luthier and you can definitely tell because each guitar plays as great as it can. They put up with my diva complaints, and let me test every aspect of the guitar I was interested. Provided me with a strap, some stands so I can compare multiple guitars and they very knowledgeable. When I chose the guitar they hooked me up with a cheap case (as per my request) and threw in a pair of strings, and the strap for free. My new guitar still plays great, looks awesome, and I will definitely be back in the future. Thanks to all the staff that helped me pick out my LTD! This is how business should be!

I purchased a 2002 '57 Les Paul Custom (reissue of course) from Five Star Guitars (via Reverb). Communication was excellent as I inquired if they could perform a little work on the guitar before sending it out to me. They were responsive, professional and extremely helpful. Shipping was very fast and the guitar was packed safely. I don't plan on buying too many more guitars but if I do have that GAS kick in I will definitely check these guys out again.

A new life!

See all

Ok look I might be nieve about some stuff, but I understand the concept of a pawn shop. You should…read morenever expect to get "fair market value" at a pawn shop, honestly it cracks me up reading comments (not on YELP) with people whining that they were expecting more $$$. It takes effort to get full valve...taking to a pawnshop is a last resort. While I was waiting I took a look around. There were some really cool guitars, framed pieces, and watches. I purchased many Black Friday watches last week, so I just observed. I had two diamond rings. One was the wedding band I no longer wear, and another was a ring i purchased over 10 years ago. I presented them to him and i replied that i wanted $2,000 at least for both of them. He replied in no uncertain terms that he couldn't come close to this. Honestly that's what I was expecting. I have sold silver coins at this location before and received a very fair amount for them, however this was a quick visit. I respect the game, just didn't want to play this time

We went there almost a week ago, to find a religious medal, on which I've already bought online…read moresimilar (same size, and one smaller than a dime size). This medal was the perfect size for my needs. I also purchased two more pendants. Paid for with my Credit Card. Sunday, I decided to re-arrange my pendants to go with my other pendants, and none of them fit my gold chain. I also found some gold rings to attach to my medals, and one of them didn't even fit inside my ring. I decided to return the two pendants. We drove all the way to Beaverton, just blocks away from the shop, when I took my receipt out of my purse, where it's been, to make sure I have it, when I read my receipt. (see photo below). I freaked out! Yes, I'm blocks away, and I'm freaking out, that they won't take it back. 20% RESTOCKING FEE? No return on jewelry and guns (I can understand guns, but jewelry?) I am not a crook, I'm an honest citizen, a previous customer, who gave them a good review, the first time. I decided to go back home and think about what else I could do! They didn't tell me any of THAT! They were busy! I opened a Credit Card Dispute on the phone, that evening. I also try to sell one of the pendants, to a friend of mine who like religious stuff, maybe, I can try to dispute the other pendant. After much talking, she decided to buy it for her daughter's graduation. I told her: I'll throw in the box and put a bow on it. I also decided, to keep the other pendant, that didn't fit my original chain, for a gift to my granddaughter's graduation (hopefully she won't see my review, and add a more expensive gold chain from my collection). I closed the dispute! LESSON LEARNED HERE: Make sure you understand the store's policy, before you take out your wallet. I could have been in a worst situation, I am glad, I found other solutions. For other people, not so lucky, you've been warned!

Interesting that these clowns advertise both online and even on the door that they buy, trade or…read moreconsign musical instruments. Last week I took two mid-level guitars in to do consignment. I've never been so insulted. These clowns must have assumed they were stolen. "Where'd you get them? Why are you selling?..." Hey pal, I have multiple instruments and these were two I almost never play (as if it's any of their business). They claimed there were problems with both and weren't interested. Now, I have done business with them multiple times, but they can kiss this customer goodbye! I'm not a thief, but these guys are jerks. To prove these were from my personal collection, I've included a picture of my remaining guitars. I ended up gifting the guitars to my niece.

But I came at about 2:45 and the whole place was still dark. Just a thought - maybe have enough staff around at all times that some of your employees can take lunch while others are still on shift? Were they closed for summer vacation again and just didn't tell anyone? Sorry, but I'm all done here. You've wasted enough of my time. At one time Portland Music Co. was the best in the city. Those days are gone. It's better to buy music online nowadays anyway. The prices are often marked down by 20% or more if you get in on a holiday sale or something.
