While I have no complaints on their sales department which always has been nice, my rating is for their amplifier repair service that is not honest. I highly recommend being very careful if you must bring your amplfiers there. It's for a repair work finished for my Mesa Boogie Mark III on 3/6/2022. I brought it for a crackling noise and it was just due to a bad 12AX7 tube (V1) due to bad contact on pins. They knew it but they additionally replaced a healthy volume pot, 2 healthy 30uF filter capacitors, while leaving one that was actually bad and underspec (20uF) which was worsening 60hz hum (which is the design weakness with this amp even with DC heater supply for V1). Total cost I paid was $100 + $15 + $16 + $10 + $125 = $266!! In addition, they didn't tighten up the top suspension screws which caused one 12AX7 tube to break during transport. It was not my first time taking the amp there because they are supposedly the only Mesa Boogie service center here. In 2018-2019, it was also them who installed the very JJ 20uF 500V filter capacitor that is underspec! I am engineer myself with a master degree in electrical engineering and I have been learning about repairing and building vintage tube amplifiers in past few years and now I know well enough. I still have all the receipts and documentation and the healthy parts that have been wrongfully replaced. read more

I was visiting Beaverton Oregon and the first music store I went into recommended Five Star Guitars. I immediately liked the selection of instruments and amplifiers. Michael was quick to help me find the perfect Mesa Boogie and brought down some custom PRS guitars so I could rock out and relax. I had a great time playing for a couple of hours. I returned the next day and continued to play and chat with the great staff. Geoff introduced himself and asked what I was interested in. He brought me a few high quality guitars until I couldn't resist. He made me a smoking deal on the JP Mesa Boogie and a beautiful purple mist PRS. The vibe in this shop is what musicians dream of. Well stocked, clean, and friendly knowledgeable staff. I haven't been to a brick and mortar guitar shop in years because the big box place has drastically degraded and some online shops have became so customer friendly. But I miss twisting knobs and bending strings before buying. The one small draw back, not enough to impact my rating, is they aren't a dealer for some brands that of grown to love. I've been looking at a pitch shifter pedal and was hoping to test it out but they don't carry that brand. Slight disappointment but didn't ruin my experience. Lemme start off and tell ya I still got Players' Anxiety in a guitar store after (almost) 20 years of playing. You just go blank. It's like when you're minding your business with an instrument and someone comes to you and says "play something". That's why you always remember your Oasis chords and bring a capo to a house party. I didn't feel any of that here though when I dropped in to spend some time with a Silver Sky SE. I was showed to a small amp room and even encouraged to crank up the volume for the test. Everything was great with this store until I had to return the guitar I bought online. It had QC issues that a brand new guitar shouldn't have. I sent pictures and asked for an RMA so I could return it and get a refund. Several days after they got the guitar back, I emailed them to check the status of the refund. I got an email back almost immediately saying I should see the refund within 10 days. Later that day, I got a notification that the guitar is back online for sale. There is no mention of the issues with the guitar. No additional photos of the issues. It is the exact same listing on the Five Star site as well as on Reverb. So either it wasn't repaired or they repaired it and are still selling it as "brand new". That's pretty disappointing. They were the only retailer that had this particular guitar new and in stock. I was so lucky to find it but my luck ran out once I received the guitar. read more

I brought my guitar in a few months back to get a set-up and to fix some loose tuners. After explaining that the guitar had tuning issues, I was told they could fix everything up. Finally, after paying a few hundred bucks I got home and noticed the tuners were still loose. I called them back and was told it should still play in tune regardless (?). Finally, I got wise and brought the guitar in to a more experienced repair shop in Portland and they fixed the problem for a lot less money. Bottom line, the work was overpriced and failed to fix the problem. I understand these things happen, but for the money they charged I expected more. read more

I had been shopping for 2 days for a new guitar. After a terrible Guitar Center experience I decided to visit these guys. I live in Vancouver so the store is out of the way, but it was well worth it. When I went in immediately I was greeted by staff. I didn't want to annoy the busy staff, but they were happy to give me recommendations based on my extremely specific needs. I told him what guitars I liked, what I didn't and he 3 different staff members all gave great recommendations. They even hooked me up to the amp I have at home so I can really experience how it sounds. Every guitar is setup by their luthier and you can definitely tell because each guitar plays as great as it can. They put up with my diva complaints, and let me test every aspect of the guitar I was interested. Provided me with a strap, some stands so I can compare multiple guitars and they very knowledgeable. When I chose the guitar they hooked me up with a cheap case (as per my request) and threw in a pair of strings, and the strap for free. My new guitar still plays great, looks awesome, and I will definitely be back in the future. Thanks to all the staff that helped me pick out my LTD! This is how business should be! read more

What up with the service? Took my guitar in to change strings and just check the electronics. That was 26 days ago. I was told even as busy as they are, no more than 10 days maybe 2 weeks. Yes, I'm a novice, I'm not a pro, and I realize that group probably gets preference. I get it. But no calls with an update or a courtesy of the repair might be delayed. I'm missing lessons with my guitar. Called again today, repair ticket is still open and no indication of when it might be worked on. I called 5 days ago and was told it was next in line. I'm at a loss, I can't practice. Maybe they could start a loaner program for repairs that will be lengthy?! I know they are still a great store, just puzzled about this situation! read more

I've played guitar in and off for about 20 years. I decided I wanted to finally upgrade and shell out some decent money for new guitar and wanted to do it in Oregon to save a little on sales tax. I kept putting it off because I was intimidated about going to a guitar shop, but I finally made it to Five Star, and I'm so happy I did. The store is a good size with ample selection of guitars. The staff was super friendly and helpful but also gave me space to look around and try guitars at my own leisure. I ended up between two guitars, and the sales guy (who's name I unfortunately didn't catch) helped talk me through the pros/cons of each. I needed up walking out with a new PRS John Mayer edition and am super happy with my purchase. And pro tip I learned shopping here- even if you're not in Oregon, you can still shop sales-tax free on their website. How cool is that? read more

I purchased a 2002 '57 Les Paul Custom (reissue of course) from Five Star Guitars (via Reverb). Communication was excellent as I inquired if they could perform a little work on the guitar before sending it out to me. They were responsive, professional and extremely helpful. Such an awesome store! Five Star Guitars living up to its name is an understatement. I went on Offer up and bought a used electric guitar and amp for my son's bday present, and was worried I got ripped off. It looked great, but i noticed a piece was wobbly. My wife and I decided to stop in and ask if they could take a look. I was embarrassed to ask, but have no experience with guitars. Luckily, Nate and Josh greeted us when we walked in and enthusiastically asked to take a look. Josh saw something that would be an easy fix on the guitar and took it to the back while Nate jumped on the amp and plugged in a guitar to test it out. After all was said and done, they recommended a new set of strings and said I'd be good to go. I decided to get a strap, have them install the strings and some cables for the guitar. Josh went out of his way to polish the guitar and Nate threw in some stickers and a T-Shirt for my son when he heard it was for his birthday. I will start with saying that this review is only about the service department. I've never bought anything from this store and cannot comment or review that part of this business. That said, I called this store as I needed warranty work done on a new guitar I bought somewhere else. They told me I could bring it in and it would be a 3-5 week wait before they would get back to me. I asked if there was any way to be put on a waiting list and when it was a week or so out I would bring the guitar in then. I was told to email the service department directly so I did. I heard nothing from them, completely ignored. I guess if they are so busy they have to camp on my new guitar for up to 5 weeks before I would hear from them, and zero communication from them up front, I probably should take it elsewhere. read more

Great local business. My two kids and I visit the store about once a month to see what's new. The employees are knowledgeable and very helpful with any questions we may have. One example that really sticks with me, I was looking to add new accessories to my guitar that I was unable to find on line. I spoke with Leah and told her what I was looking for. She said she would look into it and give me a call in a couple days. As promised she called me back a couple days later and gave me a few different options. For her to follow up for what could have been a $30 sale was quite impressive. I'm a 70-year-old guitarist who has purchased several guitars during the past 20 years. I've always wanted a Fender Telecaster and began searching on the intranet for a model that would best fit my playing style and price range. The New Fender Telecaster Ultra Luxe caught my eye, particularly in the color of Transparent Surf Green. I first checked with all the Big Box Stores (Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Sweetwater and others) for the Best price. The MSRP on these guitars is $2,599.99, plus tax. They all provide free shipping. While surfing the intranet I discovered "FIVE STAR GUITARS", located in Beaverton, Oregon. This guitar store offers "NO SALES TAX" on all their musical equipment. Their web site displayed the Fender Telecaster Ultra Luxe in both colors (2-Tone Sunburst and Transparent Surf Geen), so I inquired about price. I initially received a price from employee Eric, which was hundreds below the MRSP of $2,599,99. I then began conversing with the Intranet Sales Manager "Leah", regarding the purchase. I told Leah I wanted the guitar to be in "Pristine" condition not a display model abused by customers. She personally inspected both of these guitars, discovering issues that would not meet my standards. I was truely impressed with her honesty and integrity. These particular guitars are currently out of stock and extremely hard to find. Leah told me she would place an order with her Fender Representative; however, the estimated delivery date would be late January or February 2024. I subsequently drove to two separate Guitar Centers who confirmed these Fender Telecaster Ultra Luxe guitars were "Out of Stock", with an estimated delivery date of June/July 2024. I called "FIVE STAR GUITAR" and spoke with the owner "Jeep" (John-Paul), who allowed me to place a small deposit to lock-in the quoted sale price of the guitar. Jeep was extremely friendly and professional, taking the time to explain their procedures, ensuring I would be notified once they received the guitar. To my surprise, the guitar arrived within weeks. The owner, "Jeep" actually took my New guitar outside and shot a short video, which he sent me before making the final purchase. Who does that? Talk about GREAT customer service. The guitar was inspected and Set-Up to my specifications and was shipped (Free) to my residence. The guitar arrived absolutely perfect and plays like a dream. The color is unbelievable. So, I walk into the guitar shop, only one other customer and 4 employees busy doing misc stuff. I go to a counter and stand there for a few minutes... No one is paying attention, so I walk over to a guy and ask if he works there, he says "yeah". So I had to ask, "can you help me with this part", he says "oh yeah". He helps me get the part I need and I walk over the the check out stand. A guy walks over there next to me standing there and starts working on something and ignores me. So, I ask, "your work here right? can you check me out", he says, "I am busy doing something, but yeah" I get it that most everyone struggling in the music biz has a bad attitude, and we all know why. Why does this attitude spill over into a music store? Because the people working there are struggling musicians that have not been properly trained on how to interface, treat, and service customers. read more

I couldn't be happier that I swung by Five Star Guitars. I'll certainly be back! Beautiful selection of first-class instruments, and a healthy range to choose from. I came in with my mind already made up, as I wanted a MiM Player Series Strat (I'd spent some time at Guitar Center before Five Star opened.) Was welcomed as soon as I walked in, and offered assistance as I picked up a few to choose from. The entire staff was pleasant and helpful, and James was as excited as I was with my purchase. I can tell these guys love what they do, and want to make sure you're as stoked to be there as they are. Pleasantly surprised to find out that they include a setup with every purchase (WHAT?! I've only been playing the guitar for a little over a year. Needed new strings and cutting/peg tool. The staff was very helpful and understanding of my lack of knowledge about the instrument. I inherited one of my dad's nicer but older guitars and was concerned about the need for repairs. They not only assured me that it was not in need of any serious repair, but instructed me on things to look out for as warning signs that repair might be needed. One of the employees also expressed his appreciation of the fine craftsmanship and materials used to make my Washburn, and I insisted he try out the instrument. I haven't been playing long and I am pretty self conscious about playing in front of others. This made me comfortable to really try playing on something nice. After shopping around and not finding "the one" I went back today and the same person was there and we picked up our process right where we left off. I picked a real beauty of a Breedlove Concert in Sitka Spruce and Mahogany that I am over the moon about. My daughter tagged along and ended up leaving with her first electric guitar, an Epiphone SG, that she's upstairs raging on right now.
