A few important things to note: *Pick up your gear a few days before race day to ensure you're ready to go! *Make sure you provide an accurate (or as close as possible) time for appropriate corral placement. Being slower than the others in your corral may leave you in the way of others with faster paces. Please be considerate! *Be sure to check out all the vendors after the race! The 11th annual D-backs Race Against Cancer event took place during Fall of 2024 at Chase Field. It…read morewas my first time running it. I had seen the Arizona Diamondbacks promote this event many times at games in the past and just never had the opportunity to run one of these. I am both a Diamondback fan and an avid runner and enjoyed combining both my loves. The D-backs Race Against Cancer is presented by Dignity Health Cancer Institute and starts and ends at Chase Field. The run is for all ages and is a lot of fun. The route for this 5K run/walk goes through downtown Phoenix. I really enjoyed running this 5K because it was on asphalt and there was no change in elevation. The run benefits Arizona non-profit organizations that provide screening, treatment and support for those dealing with all types of cancer. Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall was on hand to kick off the event. He is a cancer survivor and a strong advocate for cancer awareness. Included with registration is a finisher's medal and a free ticket to a Diamondback game.

The D-Backs Race Against…read moreCancer is actually a pair of events taking place on an early Sunday morning (typically in early April). First there's a 5k run that traverses much of southern Downtown Phoenix, followed by a 1k family walk that circles the sports and entertainment district (aka the Legends District). The event starts and ends at Chase Field with race participants having the ability to finish their morning by taking a leisurely stroll around the warning track on the field at Chase. The D-Backs team shop is also open for the event and there are a number of vendors and cancer non-profits that station themselves along 4th Street. The event was originally started by Diamondbacks General Manager Derrick Hall after he contracted prostate cancer. Hall's wife has also battled breast cancer. So the D-Backs partnered with the Dignity Health and the University of Arizona Cancer to put on this annual event. Proceeds from the event go both to the title sponsors as well as other non-profit cancer organizations including the American Cancer Society, the American Liver Foundation, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the American Lung Association, and others. Registration for the 5k is $40/person and the 1k is $20/person. With registration, you'll get an event t-shirt, a voucher for a D-Backs game ticket, and a drawstring bag with random goodies inside. At the event there are a few food vendors including Dunkin Donuts (odd I know) and also free bananas, oranges, Gatorades, and bottled waters for the participants. The event has plenty of restrooms as well as other random vendors giving out free knick knacks to racers at the finish line. One knock I will give this is event is that its very poorly advertised. The event still gets surprisingly good turnout even though the D-Backs and their sponsors do very little to promote the event. But I'd like to see the D-Backs really get the word out about this event to the community. They don't advertise it in the local newspapers or news stations, they don't advertise the event at all on social media, and from what I can tell Chase Field itself does little to promote it. I gotta think they could make this a blockbuster event that could raise a lot of money for these non-profit groups if they'd only put a little effort into promoting it. Yeah, it would get pretty crowded down there if they did. But hey its for a good cause everyone can get behind, so why not? In any event, my brother, two nephews and I had a fun time doing the family walk again this year and will undoubtedly do it again next year. Hopefully the D-Backs can muster even more participation in this event with a little more effort from their marketing department. Cancer sucks, so let's get more people to show up and help kick cancer's ass.

The second annual Tri For The Cure AZ took place April 20, 2008. Over 900 women and children came…read moreout to participate and there were spectators galore! There was a great energy at the event and it was fun more than competitive so i totally recommend it to beginners or people who want to get a taste of what doing a longer distance triathlon is really like. It's also more appealing for first time triathletes because the swim takes place in a pool - much easier than open water! The distance is short for triathlons, even shorter than the normal sprint distance. It consisted of a 400 meter swim, an 8 mile bike, and a 2 mile run. There were options for people to do relay and duathlon as well. Originally, my friends and I thought we'd be starting at 7am and done by 8:30, but there was a delay in the start, and the way that it was set up, they started each person separately, so we we spent the entire morning there. Since the transition area closed at 6am, it made for a long day... but it all worked out! The event ran smoothly once it began and the pool was great! The bike course was a square and pretty flat, so it was easy enough to do the two laps... and the run was a one-mile loop so it went by pretty fast as well. They had adequate water stops on the run and the park we ran through was beautiful. Even the expo (which took place at Gainey Village) was fun... and it's obviously all for a great cause - I lost both of my grandmothers to breast cancer so it's one that hits close to home... I pray we'll find a cure soon. Now, the question is, what's our next race? :)

Everything Gabi M. reviewed regarding this event is right on the money. Great sprint triathlon for beginners (and veterans). I did this tri as a relay both in 2009 and 2011 and both times my teammates and I had a great time. Both times I brought my hubby and son and they had fun too. My teammates and I plan on doing this again next year so it'll be my third year doing this race. And I'm considering doing some that are longer distances too!

There are Pickleball courts, tennis courts, library, walking course, par course and lawn bowling greens. Everything was being utilized except for the library which was not open yet. The lawn bowling greens are kept clean and manicured. The pickle ball courts were busy with happy players enjoying their games. Plenty of parking in all areas.

The manager spoke regularly to young families, and yes, one would expect that the older customers are most probably residents who know the rules, but it went beyond that. Some senior citizens were doing walk laps in the unrestricted area, and families were told to move away rather than the people use the unused lanes. There is no jumping even in the diving section, there can be no splashing, and a couple kids who did cannonballs from the diving board were told to stop.

Choosing our first marathon ever together was no easy task. Location was a big deciding factor…read more Since my friends and I all live here in Arizona, it was super convenient to have the race right here in town. I still find it funny that even though the race is titled, "The Phoenix Marathon," it takes place entirely in Mesa. The downhill first half is a gift. The views are beautiful gliding into the city all the way from Usery Mountain. The run is enjoyable since the gradual downhill descent makes running somewhat easy and you are tempted to bolt down the mountain. The main tip here: "Pace yourself! (And don't get too carried away!)" Enjoy the scenery while you can! The second half - flatter. More running through the city so you kind of miss the desert scenery at the start... Shuttle Drop Off - The full marathon drop off point was basically where the shooting range is at Usery Mountain. All runners whether it's the full or the half must ride a shuttle since the race ends at the Mesa Shopping Area off Dobson and the 202. There is basically no where to drop off runners close to the start of the full marathon since as a runner, you'd have to trek uphill a bit to get there and who wants to do that before running 26.2 miles? So shuttle, it is! They say the last shuttles leave at 5am but some our friends straggled behind and were a little later and still were able to make it on one of the transports but I don't recommend risking waiting until the last minute. The Start - both starts had fireworks to send us off. DJs played music and talked to keep us entertained while waiting for the race to start at 6:30am. Heaters warmed people in line for the porta-potties and there were bonfires that people gathered around. It was a great way to meet people and share running stories! Aid/water stations - adequately placed throughout the race. It was fun to see what each group themed their stations. A contest for cash prizes was given to the most energetic and fun themed station so it kept groups cheering for runners the whole time! Typically Gatorade, water, fruit, and energy GUs by Clif were provided for us. The only mishap is the porta-potties were out of order at the halfway point (the only time we planned to stop briefly - go fig!!) so we had to wait until the next 2-3 miles before finding the next one to use. Finish - full of energy, a variety of food trucks, Photogs ready to take pics. Your typical finish except this time, there was a tent offering massages for finishers. There were chairs and rest areas for people to kick back and lots of tents present just like at the Expo. Next year for both the full and the half, the medal is collectible and can be put together with medals for the next four years to create a star - all you have to do is run the Phoenix Marathon or half marathon 5 years in a row to complete the star made of running medals. That's quite the commitment, don't you think? Still very tempting though, those sly race planners!

This is now the Mesa Sprouts Marathon. I've done the full twice & here is the Breakdown…read more EXPO: you HAVE to pick up your race bib the day before the race at the expo, which is located in the same shopping center parking lot where the finish area will be. Good way to see the lay of land & check out where to park race day. The expo itself is decent & you get some free samples of stuff. BEFORE THE RACE: Parking is in the same vicinity & buses take runners of all distances to their respective start. GET ON THE CORRECT BUS. They are all marked & in separate sections. Twice I've seen people end up at the wrong starting line. My biggest complaint is how early this race is. It's a 0630 start & the buses run from 0400-0515. It's still completely dark the first 30 minutes of the run- & the marathon start is in a desert area. I saw several runners almost trip over cones in dark areas. The port a potty line pre-race was longer than other races i've done, so much so that some were peeing in the bushes. The course was good- a decent amount of decline in the first half (some incline) & flat the second half with a slight decline at the end. The course support was excellent. There were 3 stations with fruit & at least 2 with gels. & i was so happy to see hydration almost every mile the last 6 miles. The finisher area is hard to gauge for marathon runners because some food is gone by the time we get there. My husband does the 10k & he tells me how much more stuff there is for them. Gear check & pickup was easy, & the walk back to our car wwas not excessive. I do wish the vendor area sold a better selection of female cut finisher shirts. I would have bought one.
