We hired HYM Construction for a major renovation in spring/summer 2024 that included nearly 4,000…read moresquare feet of flooring, two kitchens, and a bathroom. We spent more than $100,000 on subcontractor labor alone, not including materials. Initially, much of the work looked fairly good, but the project became frustrating as finishing and management issues surfaced. The proper trim/corner pieces needed to finish portions of the flooring were not ordered or suggested, leaving us to track down the material ourselves. I ultimately had to order it from another state and repeatedly remind the team that the finishing work still needed to be completed. We also had a major issue with the cabinet for our double oven. The oven had been sitting on-site for months because of delivery delays. When it was finally time to install it, the subcontractor suddenly said the cabinet could not support the oven's weight and had me call the cabinet company myself to ask about the weight allowance. The cabinet company said they had never been asked that before and found the concern unusual. After all of that, the subcontractor told me, "Pay me an additional $500 and I'll fix the cabinet for you." I paid it because we were at the very end of a months-long project. The biggest issue, however, has been the flooring. We reported separating and buckling boards fairly early and were initially told there was essentially nothing that could be done. Hector literally told me to put rugs over that part of the flooring. Months later, the damage became exactly what we had feared. HYM later came out with the flooring subcontractor, examined the issue, and took a piece of flooring to try to find a solution. We never heard back. More than two years later, the flooring issue is still unresolved, despite repeated follow-up, and we are now seeing concerns in other areas as well. For a project of this size and cost, I expected the contractor to manage problems, coordinate subcontractors, and stand behind the work. Unfortunately, the lack of follow-through has significantly changed our overall impression of HYM Construction.
