Great service. I admit we haven't consumed the meat we bought yet, I'll be sure to follow-up then…read more But... this place is the real deal. NOT for the faint of heart, though. Real... as in they walk 'em in the door on one side, and then you buy the cuts on the other side. There is no storefront. There is no pretty marketing. This is a custom meat packer (kind phrase for a small slaughterhouse) at the end of a road. You drive by the big receiving door where animals walk in (or game is carried in), and after you park, you walk into a room that's just a few steps from the cutting floor. It's cold. It's a concrete floor with a drain in it. There's no service counter. There's a disconnected, don't-know-when-the-last-time-it-ran cold case (not sure if it once ran, or is for future plans). As I read this, it's sounding really bad. But... if your goal is fresh, local, custom cut meat... Eric (who I later found was the owner) cheerfully took my call asking about hours, and then when we arrived at the address we'd put into our GPS, again my call asking if we'd gotten lost. (We just hadn't gone down the road far enough -- you go all the way to the end, turn left, and park in front of the gray building with the blue trim.) There are no signs. We'd read good things about their meat packs. Their web site tells of all the cuts they have available, and the prices. (http://www.mtangelmeat.com) It recommends calling in an order, which we'll do next time. When we arrived we clearly were like, "Uh..." as we walked into the large, bare room. Men with aprons full of knives sorted through huge tubs of off cuts. I told Eric what we were looking for -- we actually like sirloin for the texture and taste -- and he recommended flat iron, better texture and flavor. We left with some hamburger and flat iron steaks, all he had were frozen. I found this on their Facebook page: "Walked in for the fist time today, hoping to find a beef brisket that still has the 'point' attached. Met Eric, who said he might have something for me, and when I asked to see it, he says it's still attached to the cow.....so he straps on his knives, heads to the back and returns with a fresh cut piece o meat that was exactly what I was looking for." So... it's a unique experience. But if you aren't afraid of where your food comes from, I'd say it's a great option.

Two of us chose this place - and we weren't disappointed! I ordered the BBQ Crunch Wrap with brisket, cole slaw, crispy onions and something else I can't remember right now. It was super tasty and was just the right amount to fill me up. The smoky bang bang dipping sauce was wonderful and I wish I'd asked for more (next time I will!) because it was the perfect compliment to the brisket. My friend ordered the same thing but with the pulled pork; she said it was very good, too. Church of Smoke BBQ is located in the Canby Beer Library, one of 7 food trucks. Ordering was easy and the cashier was friendly and helpful. Street parking is available along with inside and outside eating areas (the outside area is covered and has overhead heaters for those chilly days). I'm looking forward to the next time I can try something else from their menu... as long as it has that smoky bang bang sauce!

I was tempted by a lot of different menu options, but ended up with the Smoked Brisket Philly. Despite being on the messy side, the bun held together really well, and it was quite delicious -- definitely take the fork that they offer you when you pick up your food, LOL. The sandwich went great with the stout beer I ordered from the beer library. This is the best cart that I've tried at the CBL, and I would definitely order from them again!

I thought they were going to be a bare bones little meat shop, but not so! They are located off Booth Bend Road, just a bit east of Lowes. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by Petey, a hella friendly donkey who'll gladly let you pet and scratch him all day long. There is also a long chicken run filled with feathered cuties to befriend. Inside the shop, there is so much beyond meat: Kitchen, home goods, and gift items abound, many farm made, and most others hyper local. There are gorgeous Damascus knives, punny tees and baby onesies, soaps, candles, cookbooks, Jacobsen salts, adorable salt cellars, preserves, honey, tea, bread, and even a little produce. I was most excited to find duck eggs, chocolate milk, canned Cougar cheese (I might have squealed with delight on that one), and handmade chocolates. If you actually came for their beef, they've got so many cuts, and prices are great for such high-quality. I stocked up on sale ground beef and nabbed some pork from another local farm. They also have a "scratches and dings" box that is discounted so it's worth asking what is available. Lastly, they offer jerky, summer sausage, and other prepared meats. I have since returned and everyone has been so friendly and pleasant. They even do a punch card for $10 off after spending $100 on beef. It's all just the cherry on top of an already fun-to-shop store. They are open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 12-5 or 6 depending on the day, so make sure to plan around that as part of your weekly grocery shopping trip.
