We stopped in here a few times last week. Our son is obsessed with fishing, but since he is only 6 years old he needs guidance/help. My husband did some fishing as a kid but is by no means an avid fisherman. So, off to Ebbetts pass Sporting Goods. The guy there was knowledgable and extremely helpful. He took the time to ask us where and what we were fishing for and helped us with the appropriate tackle and bait for each day. A younger member of our party rented snowboard gear from this store Feb 5th & 6th 2010, raving about their prices and friendly service. On the 5th, one of the snowboard bindings was defective and our friend had a horrible day trying to keep the locking mechanism locked. It was especially bad and very time consuming each time he had to lock the bindings when getting off the lifts. There were two times when the binding failed while loading the chairlift causing him to go out of control and me to be struck by the chair as three of us were loading...this was not a high speed detachable chair. The staff at Bear Valley tried to help, but could only suggest that our friend cup his hand over the troublesome binding to "warm" it! At the end of the day we took the snowboard back and shared the trouble with the store owner in Arnold. Instead of offering to comp our friend he gave him a 50% off coupon for the NEXT time he rented from him. He got another board for the next day, at full price, and we left. The next day the shoelaces on the rented snowboard boots broke! Nothing was compensated for any of the trouble our friend went through. I would not recommend using this store for any equipment rentals, regardless of the price. It is very obvious they do not value their customers and their gear seems questionable in quality. read more

It was a Saturday morning, me and my girlfriend need to rent some supplies so we came to ebbets sporting goods. as soon as we walked through the door we were greeted by a woman and then quickly by Bill the owner. I stopped in there last year in the hopes of getting a fishing license and maybe some local knowledge on lake Alpine.....I expressed that i wanted a license for both fresh and saltwater and the gal behind the counter (owner) just pointed over my shoulder and asked "what do you want?"... so again I told her that i wanted both fresh and salt...??? again she pointed and said "it's all right there..." I turn and look at a posted menu of options for licenses with many choices... as I turn back to engage her I get this incredulous look of ....welll???? So now my P.C. swith has been flipped and I said to her,"I came in her expecting local help and hospitality but instead you're selling rude effing attitude!" That's when the enforcer hopped into the conversation...he walks up to within 12 inches of me all puffed up and says"boy, you can't talk to my wife like that" ( thanks for the compliment but at age 52 I'm no ones boy) So Hoss and I had about a 3 min. testosterone filled conversation about how people should speak to one another with him all the while physically trying to bait me... I walked away in utter dis belief of what had just transpired, Hoss mad dogged me all the way out of the parking lot (in his defense i was smirking at him from the moment he first puffed up) I continued up the Hwy and found some friendly people at Bear Valley Sport Shop and this is why I'm finally writing this review.... Whilst doing some recon for a trip up there this year, I stumbled upon the website of Ebbetts pass sporting goods... and on their website they claim to be the only place on Hwy 4 that sells fishing licenses....WRONG!!!!... These people are not worth your time or hard earned money... Attitude is everything and theirs is terrible! read more

Woman at front counter was extremely rude to me. I will not shop at a place that is not interested in their customers.

I should have checked out the Yelp reviews before visiting. I stopped by with my wife, brother, and my brother's girlfriend, hoping to rent some snowshoes and get a recommendation for where to hike. The woman who "greeted" us was extremely condescending and went out of her way to be rude to us. I can think of few times in my life where I have had such a poor customer service experience. Bill and Sharon are the owners, and are very friendly and helpful in any of your sporting good needs. Bill has been very helpful, in helping me catch many fish. If you are a beginner, Bill will set you up with the right equipment and even show you how to use it. He always knows where the fish are biting. His prices are very reasonable and he really know his products. I have also rented ski equipment and have been very happy. Their prices are a lot better than most rentals. Once you have been measured, they keep the information. The next time you are renting your equipment, you can call ahead and they will have it waiting for you. I have found the ski equipment to be of high quality. I have seen them personally check their rental equipment, before they let me leave the store with it. read more

This is place is an old school, small town sporting goods store. Don't expect Cabela's or REI. The reason for the 5 stars really comes down to the owner being so nice, helpful and sincerely thankful for your business. Every time I am in this place, there are lots of people from the valley and Bay, some not knowing much about fishing or the local waters. This guy treats them like they are family and tells them what they need and where to go (damn it man- no wonder every hole around here is crowded). The shop is stocked with lots of lures, flies, baits etc. Though I don't go in here too often, I am glad to have this sporting good shop in our town. read more

I've been coming up along hwy 4 now for about 26 years, and I was always impressed by Ebbetts Pass sporting goods. It was a good store under it's old ownership, and Bill simply took a good existing business and made it even better. I've worked in the fishing industry, I've known Bill for probably 12 years or so, back when he was a manufacturers rep, and what you see is what you get with him! He's honest with his customers, and really strives to develop long time repeat business. I no longer have property up in Arnold, so I don't get up that way nearly so often, but when I do, if I need current, accurate fishing info I don't hesitate to stop in and see either Bill, or one of his solid staff......... read more

Don't listen to these 1 star reviews, this place has awesome service, and a great variety of flies for both bass and trout. I went there as a beginner fly fisherman looking to learn the art of fly fishing, I knew literally nothing about fly fishing, I got the full walkthrough of all the rods available, he took the time finding a fly rod that was a perfect fit for me, same went for the reels and the line, he then set everything up and got it ready for fishing. That was not the end, he took me outside to the parking lot and spent about an hour and a half teaching me all these different casts and techniques. To top it all off after I purchased the gear he told me about some really good fly fishing spots around the area to go check out. This guy completely changed my life, now when I go out for trout i never touch my spinning gear and I have become a pretty decent fly fisherman, I highly recommend this place for all your fishing needs, especially if you are a new fly fisherman. Also I forgot to mention that all redington fly rods and reels that he sells comes with a lifetime repair warranty, meaning if your rod or reel breaks anytime you can mail it over to redington and they will repair it for a small repair fee. So don't be intimidated by the prices of the rods and reels, they are a worthy investment that will keep you happy and fishing for the rest of your life! 5 stars great business, 5 stars awesome products, 20 stars awesome customer service read more

i have used this shop on two separate occasions. each time i was very pleased with the service. the first visit was 2-2009. i rented a set of skis for myself and Snow boards for my two kids (12 and 13). they were very help full with sizing our gear. and we had no issues with any of it. we even purchased lift ticket and some misc. stuff.(gloves, goggles, and beanies.) my second visit was just this last weekend. we didn't go skiing or boarding this year, we just rented some snowshoes and snow pants along with a sled and disc for some fun in the snow.(it was my 2yr olds first time. he loved it) the owners of the store also shared in the excitement of his first snow experience. we even took advantage of a sale they had on some new gear 40% off. they even took the time to check throughout the store for a lost cellphone. i plan on stopping by this store every time i head up to the snow for some fun. read more

Went there to rent skis in the morning. Got the skis, boots, an poles for our young son and got only the skis and poles for me and my wife since we both have our own ski boots. When we went to the counter to pay, the woman behind the counter first had to adjust the pricing of the rentals on the forms since they had made a mistake and charged us for the boots. Even after she had made the adjustment there was $10 extra charge for ski adjustment on both our forms. We asked the woman what this charge was for and she told us that this was for labor for adjusting their rental skis to our personal boots. She said that this is practiced by all ski rental companies. Now we have skied and rented many skis over 20 years and we have never heard of nor experienced any ski rental company charging extra for adjusting their rental skis to personal ski boots. If they wanted to charge extra for rented ski adjustment to personal boots, they should just include the price and show it as part of rental of ski and poles. I don't know of anyone who would rent the skis and adjust the ski binding by themselves to their personal boots. Besides, I wouldn't think the rental company would allow it. So basically there is no cost difference between renting the entire package of ski, poles, and boots which there isn't any ski adjustment charge versus just renting skis and poles. When we told her Sierra Nevada Adventure Company (SNAC) Sporting Good just down the street does not charge extra for the adjustment, she told us to go there and rent the skis. Since we were planning to ski that day and were already running late, we decided just get the skis and not bother going to the other place. But the attitude of the woman and the place charging extra that is not stated anywhere on their website left a bad impression on our minds. We will never go there for any reason what so ever. And, we recommend going to Sierra Nevada Adventure Company (SNAC) just down the road where service is much friendlier and fair. read more
