John runs the store, and is one of the coolest store owners I've had the privilege of meeting. Each time I come in he asks what I'm looking for, and then will immediately start playing similar-sounding artists on the turntable based on my answer. His extensive knowledge doesn't end at records - he has a lot of stories to tell on artists, on music, on drugs, on life in general. You can always expect an entertaining conversation upon setting foot in this store. His record collection is also wide and diverse, and there are some real gems hidden in the crates if you care to take your time looking through them. The other chap that runs the photography side of the store is always a great conversationalist, and is always telling the stories behind the old photographs of Adelaide and the city's beginnings. The collection of vintage cameras is impressive, and you can pick up some pretty cool equipment for a bargain.

While mostly I shop at garage sales, I like knowing this place is here when I have something specific in mind. Also, the old cameras at the back of the store are like a cluttered museum. Gorgeous to look at, as well as the old photography on the walls. I've been so tempted to buy an old Nikon lens just to see what the pictures are like from my camera, but i can't afford these ones as much as I can't afford new lenses! The atmosphere of this place is so fantastic, it sucks you in even if you resist its charm.

Basically most Harvey Norman stores are set up the same. Huge entrances to the furniture department. Usually entrances are in the middle of lounges, if you go one way you will ge tmore furniture then curve round to televisions and the likes, go the other way and get beds and bedding. I have managed to grab some fantastic bargains on some great pillows here actually. Heaps better quality than at department stores and they lasted heaps longer. The Electrical and Computers are usually in a separate section at the rear or one side of the store, with electrical left of the spearate entrance to this area and computer, mobiles phones, camera's, PC software, etc to the right of the registers. I have never purchased nay major electrical items from this store but have bought some really good computer equipment here. Including a fantastic Acer laptop. It was already out so cheap and had a cah back offer making it even cheaper in the end. I have always received good service here and been given some great advice from people who obviously know their products. Getting the service is the hardest part - they are usually really busy, more so in computers and electrical departments, and it may take a little wait before someone is available to help you. However once you have someone their service is usually very good, I have never had an issue with a staff member at any Harvey Norman store.

But I find that you're paying for it when you buy stuff here. That's why they bitch and moan about online shopping. You'll get exactly the same thing and pay less than half the cost in many situations. I haven't ever bought furniture at Hardly Normal's, just because if I'm paying that much, it'll be from a premium store, not this place, or any of the others. I do feel a bit sorry for those that have to buy their computers here. Seriously, go to MSY, buy the parts, and learn to do it yourself. The store has a large range of music CDs and DVDs, ranging from recent and popular artists to more obscure tastes, as well as a large ABC and world music section. I never had too much trouble finding the stuff I was looking for, although occasionally they may have run out of stock of the less popular artists; in which case they would always ask if you would like to have it specially ordered in for you. The DVD and Blu-ray section is also extensive; featuring collections of new and classic titles, as well as a section devoted to SBS produced films. The pricing is a little higher than other retailers, but I can't blame them as it's hard to compete with nationwide outlets such as JB Hi-Fi. However, Dillons really feels like a music shop - unlike the clinical feel of some of the larger retailers. Another great thing about Dillons Music is that it seamlessly connects to Dillons Books next door. You can be browsing music one moment, and then move over on to books if you've changed your mind or wish to continue browsing.

Not my bag but there will be plenty of people out there who still like buying a CD in person and whose tastes fit in with this. The DVDs were more my thing: Attenborough aplenty! Yes please. Then the attraction to collect music with some amazing artwork and limited addition books that come with them. Or maybe it is just nostalgia? Records do have a specific sound that you can't replicate well on CD. My partner and I used to buy heaps of CDs. But stopped after a while as they just kept scratching. I have thrown so many away. Do you remember when you where younger ordering and waiting your favourite cassettes and CDs? There was a lot of excitement and anticipation of getting it home and thrashing it on your player. Or maybe you grew up in the vinyl era and you always knew the value of owning a piece of physical musical artwork. Recently my partner and I decided to purchase a record player from a thrift store. Consequently this has developed a lust for vinyl. We have been searching high and dry for good record stores. We came across Rocktherapy simply when driving past. The big record on top of the store is a good flagpole. The store is small, but has some quality and well priced records and CDs stocked. There are a couple of rare and collectables available depending on your taste. I was very happy to find a Grandmaster Funk LP for $10. Got that little gem home for many laughs and dancing around the living room. The gentleman that owns and runs the store is very friendly and helpful. He is happy to have a chat about music and what his store has too offer. I think that stores like this is something that I really missed from when I was growing up. Now with access the Mp3s kids are missing out on that sense of excitement in finding something cool in a record store and owning it's physical form! For my fellow vinylheads, worth a trip to browse!

Well not even Cheap As Chips can do merch at $2 anymore and these guys had to have a point of difference right? Oh yes and I should also pre-warn you the name of this store is incredibly deceiving...unless you consider tupperware, nail polish, baskets, costumes and bath sponges as fashion items this place does not live up to its name. The other deception? Not EVERYTHING in the store is $2.80. Luckily when I walked in I walked into the left hand side of the store (which is the $2.80 part of the store). The right hand side of the store has any product costing above $2.80 in it! So if you are looking for kawaii costumes and random storage crap and beauty related items that you can't read the ingredients of then this place is for you. Just keep in mind the tips to getting around Kawaii so you don't get caught out when in store!
