We both were really pleasantly surprised at how good the serving sizes were; I know I went in pretty hungry, and I came out COMPLETELY satiated. I should've put my hand next to the photo of the dish so that it gave it a little perspective, but it was very small and those "prawns" were tiny ass shrimp. I thought well at least if it tastes good, it'll make it worth it. I took a sniff, no characteristic scent of truffle, which I think any foodie knows is a super strong smell. I took a bite. Nothing. The dish literally had no flavor with the exception of the two Parmesan crisps. I felt like I was eating watery rice. After adding quite a bit of salt, I managed to bring out a hint of the beet flavor, but the truffle was still completely absent. The fish and chips was a nice sized portion, probably the best meal on the table overall. The pie of the moment which was mushroom and chicken tasted really good, but was a very small portion as well. The steak and chips was the upgraded 9 ounce sirloin from the original option on the menu. I'm not sure , what realm of the universe you could ever call that piece of meat 9 ounces. Like not even before cooking. Really the saving grace of the entire meal was when the manager came over at the end of the meal to collect the payment. He was so friendly and gave us a lot of really good suggestions for things to do in the area.

The staff were a bit short (in temperament, not height) and, juxtaposing the pleasant décor, made the place feel a bit cold. As I perused the menu, I noticed that when locals came in, orders would go straight to them - this was clearly a place where the locals returned and the staff took notice. When a young mother came in with a pram, said locals cooed over the baby, to which she exclaimed "He's the Prince of Morningside!" and they all filled the place with friendly noise. They had to compete with an Italian crooner: the soundtrack from discarded 1940s vinyl salvaged from opera but not pop as we know it. It works well with the eclectic decor - free form wood tables and chairs, a few clocks, art that is both for sale and for decoration, and a large downstairs area filled with curiosities. It was like a global village without any forced ethnicity...tiny sections of Turkey, Brazil, Scotland, Australia, North American Indian....pieces of each thrown together, as though someone had rolled a chest full of memories and then opened it as a cafe. Breakfast was so huge I couldn't finish it. The omelette left little room for any of the other accompaniments and the toast had to have its own plate. Not haute cuisine but it is what it says on the menu. The selection of cakes and pastries, however, looked amazing and completely unnecessary after breakfast. Given they have a good standard of latte, I'll be back to check out how the locals are doing, and how fresh that baklava is... Overall, it's a comfortingly strange mix but it seems the point of the Clock Cafe is that time stops, just for a little bit.

I was scrolling along past pictures of cats, salads, juices, sunsets and BAM! A toasty, gooey, cheesy, buttery sandwich stopped me in my tracks. Surely this must be from a trendy, toasty only cafe in London. I clicked the link and was ready to grab my coat when I saw that Meltmongers was in Edinburgh! After one visit, my hubby and I are ready to declare Meltmongers our lunchtime favourite. I love when people stick to what they know best - and that's just what Meltmongers do - a simple menu - done well. 3 breads - soft white, bloomer and sourdough; and a good selection of cheesey combos. We went for the classic (cheddar and american) and the smokey chilli (smoked applewood cheddar and jalepenos), both on sourdough. And of course a side of sweet potato fries. There are only a few 'tables' and a counter in the window. There is some empty space in the centre and as demand grows (which it will!) I'm more seating will appear. You can also take away. It wasn't long before we were tucking into our tasty toasties. Generously buttered (I hate when the outside edges are left dry), toasted to perfection and every bit of cheese melted and oozing. Seriously good! And the best sweet potato fries ever! The last ones I tried at a burger joint were greasy and rubbery. Not these! They were thin, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. My husband doesn't usually go for 'fancy chips'' but he ate more than I did! But, the single portion was plenty for both of us. This place was love at first sight but still a tiny bit of room for improvement. I enjoyed the sourdough, but I really love toasties on granary bread - when the bits go all crunchy and nutty, but there was no 'brown' option at all. My hubby didn't have to share his toasty with me; I love jalepenos but not smoked cheese - I'm sure that you could ask for changes to the set menu, but would like it to be more obvious. Maybe they could list optional extras and types of cheeses available on the menu; making it easier to create custom toasties (like a gruyere and garlic mushroom - hint hint) And introduce some more interesting cheeses - maybe as a daily special; like comte, or a blue. Although, I'd be perfectly happy to eat that classic toasty every day..... ps. I nearly forgot - they do sweet toasties too! I was taking a diabetic medicine that was causing some bathroom issues and she did an emergency stop for me and I am so grateful. I highly recommend tours to see Uk as driving on the other side of the road and a million turn about circles is terrifying so let the professionals take that stress from you. Plus they know where the cool stuff is and when to go. Our other tours in other countries the driver and guide were separate, so she gets bonus points for doing it all and to perfection. the roads are so narrow and scary but she did great. this was first time using this company but left willing to take other tours with Rabbies. She didn't say anything about tips which most do .. but bring tip money and reward exceptional service. We went on the trip with another couple and made some lovely memories. Loved going with friends even made it more special but in other trips we ended up making friends for life so either way is great. We did a stop near an ancient Village I think Vikings anyway there were some shops there where my friend bought a purse and I kicked myself for not going in there and getting one too. I thought the purse prices would be better in Edinburgh they were made with the local Fabric and real leather. When we got to Edinburgh the purses were not as well made and they were more expensive and a lot of them weren't even with real leather or made locally. The Edinburgh purse is a lot of them they use the fabric woven there but they made them out of the country probably China or India. Anyway I that is my biggest regret of the trip that I didn't buy an Islander purse. Now I'm going to have to see if I can buy one online and it'll be a lot more money. So if you go to the Isle of sky and you want a bag or a purse you might want to keep that in mind. My friend bought one that was more large than what I would have wanted but it was around a hundred and some dollars great price for the quality. It's well known that the UK is not known for its great weather. Lots of rain and can be very windy around the cliffs and water. I bought vessie shoes which are waterproof and comfortable but kind of expensive. I also took a raincoat with a hood and a hat with a brim and a chin strap because the wind around the cliffs is real. This hat is especially nice because it has a mesh netting that you can unclip in case you're getting in a buggy area which around the ferry pools we needed. If you don't need the netting you can just clip it back up and so it's really handy. The UK and pretty much most of Europe we find that they like twin beds in the hotels and especially the b&bs. I guess people don't like each other lol and want to sleep together. So we would call ahead and ask that they push the beds together before we get there if that was the case. They also don't seem to have air conditioning screens on the windows or sheets on the beds?? Sometimes places will have fans so it's worth asking or calling ahead to see if you can reserve a fan because they definitely don't have enough fans for every room. If you stay in a US-based hotel like a Hilton or Marriott Holiday Inn you don't have to deal with this as much but I guess it's just common in Europe. Traveling through the summer or heat wave months this can be a bit of a problem. The bed seemed all have these duvets which is great if it's cold out but when it's too warm it's a bit uncomfortable. Since we were roasting we had to open the window didn't love that there was no screen and a lot of the windows are made to where you can only open them about an inch so it doesn't provide much air. This was the case through all of the UK not just the Isle of Skye.
