I did Sandeman's free Edinburgh walking tour which was a great way to get oriented in the city and…read morelearn about its history and culture. Our guide, Rory, is a local and has a PhD in History from the University of Edinburgh, so you're getting a perfect mix of academic depth and genuine, lived-in perspective. Over about 2.5 hours, he brought the Old Town to life through its architecture, layers of religious history, and the cultural shifts that shaped what Edinburgh is today. We also walked along the charming Victoria street which was rumored to be the inspiration for Harry Potter's Diagon Alley. Rory was incredibly knowledgeable and kept the whole group engaged the entire time. If you're visiting Edinburgh and love history, culture, and architecture, this tour is 100% worth your time.

Jen Cresswell, our tour guide, was engaging, knowledgeable, and her enthusiasm was contagious! There was a good combination of Edinburgh history and Harry Potter/JK Rowling facts. Also, in comparison to other tours, this tour didn't include as much walking. If you have time to kill in Edinburgh, I highly suggest it! Do yourself a favor, if you're going to see Scotland, book a private tour with Duncan McNab…read more Short review: Duncan is one heck of a tour guide. Unpretentious, knowledgeable, very personable, and a true Scotsman who wants to share his country with you. Long, romanticized review: There is nothing better than experiencing a country through the eyes of someone whose beloved home it is. Before saying it's obvious, understand this; any tour guide knows history, any can say "this is the most visited site in Edinburgh", most can even tell a tall tale or two to make you laugh but it takes a very special guide to create an experience. Experience? It goes without saying, the sites, monuments, abbeys, are stunning in their beauty. The countryside itself, romantic. Hollywood tale of Braveheart debunked. The Holy Grail at Roslyn Chapel; hmmm maybe. It's what's beyond that. It's about a telling of centuries old tale and believingly relating it one's own youth. About a drive along the modern piers, enroute to the Highlands showing off modern industrialization while taking subtle nationalistic punches at the unified UK that only a proud, long time, Scotsman can make. About lunching at a pub and listening to a father's hopes for the future of his children and how similar yet very different they are from our own. It breathes life into the country and makes it a living experience. Details: Send a booking request via the company website. Provide a list of dates and an idea of what you want to see. You do not need to be specific (I asked for castle and abbey ruins plus a distillery). Single or multiple day tours with lodging. Private vehicle (luxury sedan to small bus) based on party size. Rates vary. (Paid £350 / day). £150 due via PayPal at time of booking confirmation, the remainder due on the day of the tour. Day of the tour, meet the charming Duncan and be prepared for a truly memorable experience.

We had limited time and told him of our desires and he was able accommodate us. So fun to see the beautiful parts of Scotland. Next time we need to go for over a week if not 2 weeks. They have a fancy Mercedes van that seats 7 people comfortably. Only 2 of us in our party so we had plenty of space for souvenirs. Highly recommend this private tour to anyone looking to have a totally customized itinerary or a set scheduled 'must see' itinerary. There are so many things to see and do in this beautiful nation (or country?) of the UK.

He is very knowledgeable about his country and will find you anywhere you want to go and see anything you want to see. His vehicle is roomy and very nice and comfortable. He is also an excellent and skilled driver. He takes the time to find out what is available in each area you are interested in and will recommend things for you to do. He also is very conscious of your safety at all times. All in all, I would recommend his tour company to anyone looking for a safe, fun tour in Scotland.

And we left with full bellies, even though we only spent about 15 each! So, the food. YUM. We had some trouble deciding which of the menu items looked tastiest (we'll totally be back to try more options!), but she landed on the steak & ale pie, and i had the black pudding, tomato, & chorizo pie. Both were delicious--so tasty and satisfying! The chips that came with them (sweet potato for her, skin on for me) were perfect, and the mac & cheese side we split was also totally indulgent. We had sticky toffee pudding and a brownie for dessert, and those were so good they vanished pretty quickly even though we were already stuffed! We also got lucky and got to taste some of their soup of the day AND some fudge--both were heavenly. I'll be going back just to have some more of that soup, for sure. We both were really pleasantly surprised at how good the serving sizes were; I know I went in pretty hungry, and I came out COMPLETELY satiated. To top it all off, the waitress was an absolute delight. She was so sweet and patient, and she really went out of her way to spoil us! It almost felt like being at a friend's place. I'm really surprised I couldn't find any reviews on this place! It's such a treasure; we're really, really glad we gave it a try. I'll definitely be back. :)
