McLarens On The Corner - Chicken & Mushroom Pie

Our waitress was very nice and even allowed us to taste a wine before we chose a bottle. It was kind of funny though, I asked for a taste and she brought out four glasses about 2 ounces each. That must not be a customary thing, I expected we would get one glass with a splash. But hey! I thought that was really nice! We enjoyed the wine and bought a bottle. I've never had a Romanian Pinot Noir before so I was a little hesitant before the taste. When the food came out, everyone's looked really good with the exception of mine. I ordered the truffle and beetroot risotto. A little background, I am obsessed with all things truffle and beet so I was really excited. I opted to add the prawns for a little protein. I should've put my hand next to the photo of the dish so that it gave it a little perspective, but it was very small and those "prawns" were tiny ass shrimp. I thought well at least if it tastes good, it'll make it worth it. I took a sniff, no characteristic scent of truffle, which I think any foodie knows is a super strong smell. I took a bite. Nothing. The dish literally had no flavor with the exception of the two Parmesan crisps. I felt like I was eating watery rice. After adding quite a bit of salt, I managed to bring out a hint of the beet flavor, but the truffle was still completely absent. The fish and chips was a nice sized portion, probably the best meal on the table overall. The pie of the moment which was mushroom and chicken tasted really good, but was a very small portion as well. The steak and chips was the upgraded 9 ounce sirloin from the original option on the menu. I'm not sure , what realm of the universe you could ever call that piece of meat 9 ounces. Like not even before cooking. Really the saving grace of the entire meal was when the manager came over at the end of the meal to collect the payment. He was so friendly and gave us a lot of really good suggestions for things to do in the area.

Opting for the Korean Gochujang Glazed Thick Cut Bacon and the Carrot Cake French Toast were both good choices as they didn't last long on my partner & I's plates. The decor's along the same lines as Tiger Lily, at least in the ground floor bar area & pretty comfy. Service was attentive and the Ladies is apparently well appointed. Somehow they manage to charge around 50p less per pint for their in-house brand (Cold Town) of beers than in the brand's Grassmarket flagship, although they stock only four of them.

It's a nice,…read morealmost cafe-like atmosphere in the day, and much more bustling with sport on the telly in the evenings. The disappointing thing is that food seems to have gone downhill. It used to have a small-ish but reasonably priced and tasty menu of pub standards. The menu has been revamped at some point in the last few months, and both mains we ordered last time (a hot dog and nachos) were very disappointing, and a big step down in quality to what we've gotten used to there. On the positive side, there's a good range of drinks, and neither the food or drinks are expensive. Still, I'd be wary of eating there again.

What did it for me is the art deco vibe. I'm quickly realising that I love all things art deco/art nouveau/arts & crafts and it's enough to draw me in anywhere. So, a few weeks ago, we finally went. The bottled drink selection was very good- though they could probably benefit from a drinks menu somewhere. The staff were friendly and nudged me in the direction of a better brew when I was uncertain. The decor was generally as expected. Unfortunately this was a Friday night and I wonder if the same crowd frequents this place on a Friday night as on a Saturday. We were faced with chats from drunken older men who had stopped in at 5 and were still there at 9:30/10. There were girls who looked liked they were on a proper night out. There were guys there to oogle said girls. It felt like we were in the city center and not tucked away in an art deco pub in Morningside. However, I hear it's much better after work and I hear the food's pretty decent, so I will give it another chance to wow me away from my other Morningside favourites.

They brought out a ton of appetizers, from haggis bonbons, bread, hummus, olives... literally something for everyone. We had pre-ordered our entree and dessert but I only managed a few bites of my burger as I had been so filled with the appetizers. Plus, I had also been hamming it up with some coos earlier in the day and who really has a heart to chow down on some beef after that? I can say this, the bun was really stellar. I had previously ordered the raspberry cheesecake. It wasn't bad but I live in a place surrounded by world-class cheesecakes so there wasn't any competition coming from it. We also celebrated one of our group's birthdays and the restaurant was happy to keep the drinks flowing for the birthday girl. Kate, one of our servers/bartenders was MVP.

When I walked past The Clock at the bottom end of Morningside Road it was overflowing with customers. So I thought I better check it out. It's an amiable place. The walls are decorated with local artists' work (for sale) and the furniture is mis-matched, which adds an element of charm. The menu is unpretentious, offering sandwiches, paninis, breakfasts, omelettes and the like. I just had a coffee, which was OK, no better. The only thing that let this place down was the service. The staff were a bit short (in temperament, not height) and, juxtaposing the pleasant décor, made the place feel a bit cold. Still, the lady next to me loved her baked potato, so maybe I'll go back and try one someday.

As I perused the menu, I noticed that when locals came in, orders would go straight to them - this was clearly a place where the locals returned and the staff took notice. When a young mother came in with a pram, said locals cooed over the baby, to which she exclaimed "He's the Prince of Morningside!" and they all filled the place with friendly noise. They had to compete with an Italian crooner: the soundtrack from discarded 1940s vinyl salvaged from opera but not pop as we know it. It works well with the eclectic decor - free form wood tables and chairs, a few clocks, art that is both for sale and for decoration, and a large downstairs area filled with curiosities. It was like a global village without any forced ethnicity...tiny sections of Turkey, Brazil, Scotland, Australia, North American Indian....pieces of each thrown together, as though someone had rolled a chest full of memories and then opened it as a cafe. Breakfast was so huge I couldn't finish it. The omelette left little room for any of the other accompaniments and the toast had to have its own plate. Not haute cuisine but it is what it says on the menu. The selection of cakes and pastries, however, looked amazing and completely unnecessary after breakfast. Given they have a good standard of latte, I'll be back to check out how the locals are doing, and how fresh that baklava is... Overall, it's a comfortingly strange mix but it seems the point of the Clock Cafe is that time stops, just for a little bit.

I seriously may have to consider moving to Bruntsfield as this seems to be mecca for gourmet goodies in Edinburgh. I first spotted a Meltmonger creation on Instagram. I was scrolling along past pictures of cats, salads, juices, sunsets and BAM! A toasty, gooey, cheesy, buttery sandwich stopped me in my tracks. Surely this must be from a trendy, toasty only cafe in London. I clicked the link and was ready to grab my coat when I saw that Meltmongers was in Edinburgh! After one visit, my hubby and I are ready to declare Meltmongers our lunchtime favourite. I love when people stick to what they know best - and that's just what Meltmongers do - a simple menu - done well. 3 breads - soft white, bloomer and sourdough; and a good selection of cheesey combos. We went for the classic (cheddar and american) and the smokey chilli (smoked applewood cheddar and jalepenos), both on sourdough. And of course a side of sweet potato fries. There are only a few 'tables' and a counter in the window. There is some empty space in the centre and as demand grows (which it will!) I'm more seating will appear. You can also take away. It wasn't long before we were tucking into our tasty toasties. Generously buttered (I hate when the outside edges are left dry), toasted to perfection and every bit of cheese melted and oozing. Seriously good! And the best sweet potato fries ever! The last ones I tried at a burger joint were greasy and rubbery. Not these! They were thin, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. My husband doesn't usually go for 'fancy chips'' but he ate more than I did! But, the single portion was plenty for both of us. This place was love at first sight but still a tiny bit of room for improvement. I enjoyed the sourdough, but I really love toasties on granary bread - when the bits go all crunchy and nutty, but there was no 'brown' option at all. My hubby didn't have to share his toasty with me; I love jalepenos but not smoked cheese - I'm sure that you could ask for changes to the set menu, but would like it to be more obvious. Maybe they could list optional extras and types of cheeses available on the menu; making it easier to create custom toasties (like a gruyere and garlic mushroom - hint hint) And introduce some more interesting cheeses - maybe as a daily special; like comte, or a blue. Although, I'd be perfectly happy to eat that classic toasty every day..... ps. I nearly forgot - they do sweet toasties too! Peanut butter and banana (I used to make peanut butter and cream cheese toasties - warm peanut butter is sooo good!) and marshmallow, nuttella and banana. This could get dangerous! And according to my hubby the coffee was great too!

The bottom half was let's say mushy and greasy, and it was a little difficult to eat as it had no sturdiness of a toastie. Don't get me wrong the filling was nice and it was packed too. I ordered The Big Cheese: Mature cheddar, American and gruyère with sweet tomato and chilli chutney and expected a little more hit in the way of chilli. Another downside was the fact that both of the sauces on the tables were more or less finished and desperately needed to be renewed and cleaned. It's not going to get me to do a hasty return. I know better places in Bruntsfield that I'm prepared to part with my hard earned cash too. Yes one Napkin, what's that about? Seriously dudes the grilled sandwich is greasy. We customers need more napkins!
