We got the light blue van with automatic transmission (road to Hana with a manual trans-no thanks!) and Noelle went through the van's features thoroughly before giving us a map of the island and circling all the camping spots available to us and our van baby. After giving us our camping chairs and wishing us a great time, we were off! We drove the road to Hana with no issues, camped in the rain, camped in the wind, by the beach, under streetlights and in the middle of nowhere. This van trip was so much more than accommodations and transportation; it was a literal and figurative vehicle for the kind of life I want to live. Staying in a hotel on a tropical island is nice; you can sleep in AC, lounge by the pool. shower and change in privacy, eat 5 star food and never ever feel out of your element. Staying in a camper van is awesome; you can sleep under the stars next to the ocean, lounge on a remote beach and then nap there, cook inventive, delicious meals with your camping partner, enjoy their company, and be bored enough to do things you wouldn't normally do (talk story for hours, play cards, snuggle up and watch the sun set for an afternoon). It was pretty incredible to actually spend multiple days worth of quality time with my husband, not just occupy the same space while looking at separate screens. You meet so many people who love "your" van, who want to tell you all about the van they used to have, and who embody the elusive aloha spirit that makes human interaction worthwhile and meaningful. We made several friends who dined with us on my glamorous one burner concoctions, or who entertained us with their stories from so many various walks of life over beers shared in camp chairs around the van's "living room". The van isn't perfect- it's 30 years old, and obviously is not a rolling Hilton. If you're creative, adventurous, and willing to see the bright side of any situation, you will LOVE Aloha Campers. Sure, we had to pull over a few times so Bluebell could cool down, and the E-brake light stayed on the entire trip. The back door flew open once in transit, and one morning I woke up with wet toes after some heavy sideways rain. The fridge never worked, and the cooler only kept our beer cold for three days. But those experiences just didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. We lived in a VW van, courtesy of Aloha Campers, on freaking Maui. Plain and simple. We cannot wait until we have a van of our own, and it was all because of this trip. MAHALO NUI LOA!!!!

Warts and all. If folks aren't reading the bold print while making their reservation, then they are in a world of grumpy disappointment. After a somewhat last moment pickup reservation on our part, we were met by a nice lady who drove the three of us to Aloha Outdoors in Kihei. She not only checked us out on the van, but also ensured we were set with camping paraphernalia (chairs, etc), gave us a solid understanding of island options available and not available to us. We had already booked ourselves at Waianapanapa and Camp Olowalu, but were thankful for the miscellaneous detail. Our Westy was on the worn side of their fleet. The ice box was out of order, we were using the backup range by the first morning, little blemishes here and there, missing little bits like the front chair tables, etc. After 172k miles it is expected. Nothing dramatic. Driving the Westy was a bit more than initially expected. I've been behind the wheel of '72 VW Bus and other '60-'70 model cars, but was initially shocked by the driving characteristics of our Westy. It took 30-60 minutes to get into the safe groovy of driving her. (And once I was back home, I was hitting the brakes on my modern car too hard!). TL;DR: break early, having driving experience with older cars is super beneficial. Regardless of driving stress, it was an amazing trip. We had the black sands beach of Waianapanapa to ourselves at times, we met lots of great people, amazing sights, waterfalls, shave ice, etc. "Do you live Aloha?" Yeah. And Aloha Outdoors does too. On my last full day I backed the Westy into a rock. A bunch of bondo popped off the rear passenger wheel well. *Crap*. Afterwards I called the hotline to explain myself. The gentlemen was not pleased and said someone needed to inspect it when the VW was returned the next day. The next day the intake crew was unpulsed, photographed the damage to the owner, and ... I never heard back. Aloha goes both ways, and I appreciate that with these folks. My son still talks about this trip. "Makapipi" is his favorite new word. WE still talk about this trip. Highly recommended, get a Westy while you can.

The longtime keeper of the Maui Fish Pond is Uncle Kimokeo, he is a life long Maui resident who has dedicated himself to preserving the Fish Pond for future generations. You see the Fish Pond was built in the 1600's to create a safe haven for the local fish to spawn and grow. Uncle Kimokeo has maintained the Fish Pond walls using stone high atop Haleakala rebuilding the wall stone by stone. Uncle Kimokeo says he's is entrusted to preserve the Pond and the culture. To listen to him explain all the cultural lore was amazing. He took us out on a Double hull Canoe north and basically had the whole boats singing and chanting Hawaiian songs giving thanks for the permission on the water. The Maui Fish Pond takes out groups daily by appointment for a donation 69.00, consider your donation as a write off as the foundation is a non profit corp. these monies supports all of the upkeep, programs and Youth programs the foundations supports. The space is located right next door to Aloha Crossfit in the business area above Piilani Highway off of Ohukai Road. From the first moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome and excited. Kids were already spray painting on a large sheet canvas and the teacher and her assistant were happily guiding them. The interior is large enough for a good dozen or more kids with tables and other areas to create art in. The kids make different art each day and I was more than impressed and amazed at their creations. The place has such a good atmosphere, good vibes, that we're already enrolling in the next Little Art Camp next month. Fantastic place!

5/10/26 We were here for a Mother's Day family BBQ. First time at this beach in all the years…read moreI've visited Maui. Never knew it was here and it is indeed a hidden gem. It's located at the end of Hauoli Street at Maalaea Bay and not in Wailuku so if you're GPS is sending you to Wailuku, turn around and head in the other direction. Fortunately, my family knew where the beach was. It's small but cozy beach but you can walk along the sandy coastline all the way down to the boats & ocean center at Maalaea Bay or in the other direction toward Kihei. I read that it is a 3-mile stretch. The beach is pretty sandy and it was very windy the day we went and the waves were decent sized. Several kids were in the water. There is a rock ledge a little bit out so just need to be careful of that. This park has a few picnic tables, outside shower, and a small parking lot for about 10 cars, one of them for ADA access. Come early because the lot fills quickly. We didn't get there until almost 10 but we had the one last spot. Street parking is available. No bathroom facilities but there are 2 porta potties at the entrance to the parking lot. They really weren't bad if you have to go. Toilet paper did not run out (and we were there all day), and it didn't reek like porta pottys normally do. Be sure to bring your hand sanitizer. The beach has no lifeguard on duty. It's also not a very crowded beach. There is a rock ledge to the left of the beach that goes out a bit where people go fishing and there were some that were just shoreline fishing. There are several trees that you can pitch your tent and set up chairs. Once you get set up, you'll enjoy the spectacular view of Haleakala, the south end of Maui where Wailea and Makena beach are, Molokini, Kahoolawe, and boats coming in and out of the bay. A beach where you can totally chill and unwind.

On some evenings they have child watch for couples that want to go out on a date. Swim classes are on Saturdays, but you can also do private lessons. This is good for younger children that are shy and need extra attention. They have camps during Spring, Winter, and Summer breaks. During summer, the cooking camp is especially popular and fills up the fastest. The swimming pool is heated and is a popular hangout, especially on weekends. The Y offers a lot of options. Although it gets crowded in the morning with seniors and teens in the late afternoon, it is less crowded and cleaner than the other gyms in town.

The first thing the captain when he saw them was called all the kids up to the (trampoline) on the front so that they could see the dolphins underneath. The kids were so excited. It was amazing. The boat was spacious for the number of people we had on the tour. Maybe 30? Just a guess. There were lots of seats indoors and outdoors, and people tended to move around quite a bit. The staff were wonderful. They told us about the animals that we saw: spinner, dolphins, green sea turtles, and monk seals. There was also a photographer who took pictures of family groupings. They weren't cheap, $90, but she took so many of our family. It was totally worth it. They served lunch, snacks, and drinks. My only suggestion is that it might be worth a thought for them to eliminate the lunch entirely. There was nothing wrong with it. Pork sandwiches and salad were great, but I just don't see how it's necessary given that the tour left at 1:30. That seemed to keep the staff pretty busy and maybe needlessly? I don't know if it would be worth reducing the price by just a small amount and eliminating that because I'm not sure if it's that much of a draw. It was absolutely perfect. We all loved it!
