I procrastinated: I faced a week in the snow, wind, and cold of The Alabama Hills and needed warm, waterproof footwear, now. I walked to the footwear department. The selection is varied. Too varied. I needed help. Ken(Kent) helped. He asked what I needed then suggested two brands. The first size was too small, the second was perfect. I tried one. He explained how to fit boots. I asked for socks. He explained full cushion socks. I bought two pairs. The boots and socks were expensive; however, the next day my feet were warm and dry -- and happy. Great sporting goods store that seems to focus on the climbing sports (bouldering, for example, which I recently learned is a specific type of rock climbing.) The store seems extremely well stocked with every possible piece of equipment and/or gadget any climber could possibly need. I was able to pick up a US Topographical map for a local climbing area with no problem. Well-organized and attractively arranged store with no extreme mark-up on the pricing. It's counter-intuitive to plan to come to Eastside and buy gear--I usually want to get my gear and maps before I leave on an expedition to the backside of the Sierra, but I need to fight that urge and wait till I get to Bishop. The guys who work in this place are incredibly knowledgeable about the stuff they sell and the area--they chose to live in Bishop because they want to be close to all the public lands. I was amazed at how much knowledge they were willing to share, and how helpful they were--it's a whole different gear world than what you get when you talk to, say, an REI clerk in the Bay Area. The gear I rented worked out great, and this place has a huge selection of guides, maps, gear and clothing. I highly recommend coming here. read more

I came here regularly long before we moved to Bishop, and now that we live here, and I know the owners, I like it even more. This is a superior outdoor store for hikers, climbers, and backpackers particularly. They are very knowledgeable, and have an excellent selection of competitively priced quality gear, clothing, books, maps, shoes and boots, etc. They also rent gear, including camping, hiking, backpacking, climbing and winter back-country gear. It's like a mini-REI with lots of local knowledge and experience. The owners are wonderful people on the board of local Audubon and other nonprofits, and they sponsor the Banff Mountain Film Festival that comes to Bishop every April, among other things. It's a GREAT local business worth supporting, and aside from that, a really great store that is enjoyable to shop in. I forgot to mention that they are dog-friendly :) They sell dog packs, booties, and other dog items and encourage you to bring your dog in for a fitting. My dog loves her backpack, and I'm bringing her in for winter booties, too, since she gets ice balls between her toes when we go out exploring in the snow. I've been coming to Bishop for years and this is my favorite outdoor shop in the city! Lots of popular brand clothing and gear all in on little store! All types of shoes, climbing gear, and clothing. The employees are extremely helpful, friendly, and really know their stuff when it comes to what they are selling. Located right off the 395, close to Line St. Bathroom located in the back, but need to ask the employees for the key. Helps keep it clean. I did all my Christmas shopping here last Christmas. Pricing is similar to other retail stores, but I always love helping out a small local business, especially this place. Even if you are just looking for information on the area, the employees will gladly help you with whatever you need to find and the gear you might need. Man, did we have good luck here! We came off the trail and my shoes were falling apart. I had very nice and knowledge;e staff help me find the best pair of trail runners for my needs (love them). We also got lost for at least an hour in the bookshelf. some great books on natural history in the Sierras. Additionally, they have a gear recycling box that they keep! we were able to leave two half used Fuel canisters with them with confidence that they would not go to waste. A must for all climbers visiting town, even if you don't *need* anything. Usually they have stuff on sale, or you can chat with the staff about climbing conditions at the Buttermilks. Likely swarming with dirtbags, beware as some may smell. Not me, of course. :P The climbing gear selection rivals all stores I've been to. A great selection of shoes, climbing clothing (Prana, Mountain Hardwear, wtc.), gear, crash pads, bags, etc. They didn't have Bison competition loose chalk when I was last there, but they had the large chalk balls at a reasonable price. They also carry all the basic camping stuff you would need: sleeping bags, stoves, cookware/utensils, etc. I don't think they sell tents. They do have down booties though, which are essential if you're camping. A good selection of guide books and magazines too. There's even a local guidebook for hot springs in the area. A great place to just browse around, or pick up something you forgot at home. There's always a larger selection of women's clothing on sale, unless you wear men's XL or waist size 38. They do have a bathroom, it's in the back, but you will need a key from the counter. Bring your toiletries and get cleaned up. :) read more

Today it was a long sleeved fuzzy sweater. Last time I think it was a pair of approach shoes. Oh, and my friend bought me a belated birthday present last spring, a coffee maker. I've yet to buy anything full price - there's always something on sale. There's usually a 30% rack (that's where my sweater came from, and the pants I bought once, and the dress another time) Maybe my shoes were full price. I don't know. Anyway, fantastic place. I was a visitor to Bishop and the eastern Sierra Nevada this past summer, and I had the good fortune of renting equipment from Wilson's. If I am not mistaken, Wilson's is the only store that rents a wide variety of outdoor equipment anywhere along the eastern Sierra. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable about the surrounding area, and full of good advice. The store is easy to find and offers a nice variety of outdoor goods for hiking, camping, and climbing. My girlfriend rented a pair of boots for climbing, I rented a Jetboil cooking system, and we both rented sleeping pads. Our rental equipment was easy to pickup and to return after our climb. Wilson's rents many more outdoor items including bear-proof containers, sleeping bags and pads, tents, backpacks, axes, and crampons. If you are a climber, hiker, or camper and need outdoor supplies for your expedition into the Sierra, I highly recommend stopping by Wilson's for a visit. read more

Alright I'm pretty new to climbing so I don't have a lot to compare them to but I had a great experience here. I needed a headlamp the guy was super nice and patient and KNOWLEDGEABLE about every single lamp they carried. They have such a selection of camping/outdoors stuff. Several kinds of coffee makers. Several kinds of portable stoves. Books, clothes, Camelbaks, lipbalm and...climbing gear. And yes, they are generous with their bathroom key for those times when you crave a flushing toilet and running water. read more

Among other sporting goods, this store contains all gear needed for climbing in Bishop. They even rent bouldering pads. If you're looking to try on climbing shoes this is the place to go. One of their employees, Tai, helped both my girlfriend and I find just the right climbing shoes. We must have tried on at least a dozen and a half shoes between the two of us. The entire time Tai was patient and provided us an incredible amount of information about each shoe. read more

Tamur courteously offered to find other sizes of gloves and made happy chatter with us about our prospective climb. Dropped in after a week camping in Death Valley where temps plunged to 20 degrees at night. Had a day tp spare before heading home and wanted to check out a few local shops. The place was loaded with everything one could imagine. Great selection, lots of choices. Decided to check out sleeping bags as mine was warm, but had zipper issues. My sales associate said they had some on sale so we went over to check them out. The one I tried on fit about perfect and he said it was on sale, so would get a new one out of the back room. Didn't have any so purchased the floor model with an additional discount because it was off the rack and the demo unit. Picked up a couple more items that had 40% discounts and a new hat. Nothing like being an impulse shopper. He gave me some great advice on items and we had some good conversation. The shopping experience was great. Not till I got home to the bay area did I take things out of the bag and look over items. Still happy with what I got, then looked at the receipt. The bag was not on sale, paid full price minus the discount for it being the sample. the other items, did not ring up as 40% off either paid full price for those. The fault was mine I guess for not checking the receipt while at the store, and it was maybe due to us having so much great conversation. Still happy with the store, I prefer shopping for these items in person, I am willing to pay for the advice and keeping my local merchant in business. So just minus one star for the price mix up. I am moving north in a few weeks so probably will not be in the area until next life time, but great place, knowledgeable staff and if you need it, they have it. read more

This store has quality outdoor clothing and everything else - stoves, tents, sleeping bags, ropes, etc. that you might think couldn't be found in a small town.
