This review is specifically for Dr. Van at Eastgate. I am a resident of Portland, and when I found out that my dog had a chipped tooth I went to a specialist (which shall remain nameless...) in town. I was told a root canal was probably the best thing to try for and it would be between $2,000 and $3,000. I was desperate for another option and after calling around I found Eastgate. The first woman who answered the phone was very polite and helpful. She referred me to Dr. Van. I left a message with Dr. Van who called me back just a few minutes later. She was so honest and helpful! She had me text her pictures of my dog's problem tooth and called me back the same day. She gave me a different recommendation (which will be much less expensive and better for my dog's health) AND she took the time on the phone to fully explain why and answer my questions. This was, hands down, the best experience I've ever had talking to a vet! If you're anywhere in the state of Oregon and your pet has a tooth problem, go to Eastgate and ask for Dr. Van. Over the past two months Dr. Moses and his staff have been treating the two senior Beagles we adopted. We can't say enough about the quality of care and the compassion for animals that we have experienced here. Dr. Moses and staff patiently explain procedures and answer all of our questions about raising two older dogs. Follow up phone calls are a nice touch as well. We wouldn't even consider taking our dogs anyplace else. You shouldn't either. read more

My standard poodle and I have been going to Eastgate since I adopted him at 7 months old. He is ten now. Initially I chose Eastgate because they were the only local vet I could find at the time that had someone staying overnight at the clinic with dogs who were recovering from spay/neuter. I didn't want my dog alone for 8 hours overnight after his surgery. Dr. Lantz and Dr. Moses are thorough and caring veterinarians. I trust them to think clearly, offer great veterinary medicine, and to communicate about my dog's health and all options for treatment. The veterinary assistants are also stellar. Amber is always thorough, kind, and professional. I tend towards holistic and alternative veterinary medicine; my dog receives traditional Chinese medicine for IBD from Dr. Wittstein. Dr. Lantz and Dr. Moses are aware of this and work with me. Not every vet is that open minded. These veterinarians at Eastgate help me to make the best decisions for my dog. I will just say this Shame ,shame on any Vet that will throw away a dog for having anxiety. I have read some prior reviews on reddit and Yelp and our dog is not the first that He (the Owner) and his clinic has sent away without a simple nail trim because they had to be sedated. But not only that he hid behind the curtains while he let his sweet staff member deliver the news that our precious baby was no longer wanted there. What a complete coward thing to do. We made her appointment a week prior and within that week we could have been sent a letter a phone call something ... but no she showed up just to be asked to take our dog and leave not only did her very long nails not get trimmed but she had developed a swollen spot on her lip that didn't get looked at as well. To the front of house staff member ( you know who you are ) we are very sorry you had to deal with that and you are the sweetest woman and are not to blame. To the vet tech that took the time to sit on the ground with our dog during her last nail trim and talk to her and touch her until you were able to clip her nails you too are a saint and a true lover of pets. ( you also know who you are) My wife has diastolic heart failure and the stress you Sir caused her that day could have killed her the pain you for no reason set upon her that day was inhumane. You have shown your true character in one act of inhumanity I hope you can live with it. We have found another vet that understands dogs with anxiety and is more than happy to take her into their care so we will be doing just that and we will also be removing our two cats from your care you do not deserve any of our business at all. Giving 3 because they were kind to my parrot & my pet sitter who brought him there frantically. HOWEVER. I've never had a check-up cost money ever in my life. They literally looked as his beak. Took weight. And listened to heart. $66 bucks. Never in my life. It wasn't just an exam out of no where, it was a follow up to check to make sure the beak looks good. After we spent a bunch of money there to get his broken beak to stop bleeding. Disappoint because they are wildly nice there. read more

I'll start with saying that everyone here is kind and patient. They clearly have the customer service thing down. However, that's not what's important with pet care. This is NOT, absolutely NOT, the place to take your exotic pets. I can't even get into the convoluted details that involve both times we brought our exotic here. It would take a very long time. But both times we left wondering what exactly was happening. Many times they mentioned having to consult with experts before advising us about care. (The first time they were supposed to consult with an expert and get back in touch with us and never did.) Unfortunately, we tried them a second time, and it was worse. Not once did they suggest that maybe we should see an exotic vet with more experience. It's obvious that they don't know what they're doing but won't send you somewhere else. We took our exotic for a second opinion after our last experience with Eastgate. The second-opinion vet gave us an immediate diagnosis and treatment plan (surprise: no need to consult an expert!) The entire treatment plan, including surgery, is less than what Eastgate charged us for two x-rays and for a couple of vets to be like "well, there's something there; let me read to you what the experts said about your x-rays" -- this was a complete waste of time, money, and was unnecessarily stressful to our pet. and holy cow, I can't believe how much they are charging, and for what? They literally know nothing. These prices cannot be justified. read more

While staying in Oregon for the month, our senior citizen kitty, Sophie, developed an ulceration on her eye that required her to visit an ophthamologist who specializes in animal eye care. That put our cat into the very capable hands of Dr. Sarah Maxwell. Dr. Maxwell took a lot of time talking to us about Sophie's history and then proceeded to exam her eyes. Her conclusions as to what was going on and the conservative approach to helping her heal, "patience and time", made us feel very confident and assured that the ulceration would eventually heal and Sophie would be OK. Dr. Maxwell wants to check Sophie's eye before we leave the state in order to see how she's progressing. Thanks to Dr. Maxwell for her gentle care and expertise. I scheduled an appointment to get my dog's nails trimmed and explicitly communicated that he needed to be sedated. 45 minutes and $100 later, he's ready to be picked up without his nails trimmed - the only reason we scheduled an appointment! Poor communication externally and internally. We will not be returning to this clinic. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would! Absolutely the worst experience I've ever had! Took my dog in because he was throwing up for two days and started walking weird the morning I took him in. The vet took his temperature and made him bleed. Then after that said they wanted to take X-rays and blood work. Also give him an antibiotic and another shot she did not tell me what it was. I had mentioned to the vet that my dog had never eaten grain before and that a month ago we switched his food to one that had grain. She said it didn't matter. I asked for a dietary test to see if he was allergic and that's why he was throwing up. She completely ignored me and then proceeded to say that he had neurological problems without any test. She ended up keeping my dog from 10am to 4pm! We had to call her for updates when I called her she started saying that he needed about 3 more different test without telling the price of them when I asked. After I asked her if she had even done the other test she told me no she has not. This was at 1pm,she then told me I need to take my dog to a specialist for neurological issues in Portland and have him stay for a few days. When I asked if she knew if that's the problem he was having she stated that she couldn't even test for it there. Finally around 2:30pm she did his blood work and told us that she blew out two vains and finally got it on the 5th try she then told us that everything came back normal. They wanted us to pick him up and 4:30pm we ended picking him up earlier at 3:30 we were there for more then an hour just to get him they wouldn't tell us anything that was going on. When we got him back he had dry pee on his leg and dry blood on his back legs. Overall horrible communication and horrible experience for my dog and I I would never take my dog here again! read more

Have gone to this vet for years but am disappointed that they make it very difficult for me to purchase my dogs prescription meds through an inexpensive online source. They require that I pick up a paper prescription every month to send to the med company rather than approving directly. They will be losing the business of me and my 5 animals read more

The clinic has recently added an automated answering system where the phones were once answered by an always friendly and helpful staff member. This is not a good move Eastgate! Your staff was always there to answer your call and make you feel like your call was important and your issue will be handled, now I'm not so sure...... read more

Disappointing. That's all I want to say. What I had scheduled for my pet didn't get done. I will not be back.

My dog and cat have been going to Eastgate for a few years so bringing our new kittens seemed to be a no brainer. They had been seen for spaying one month ago at Willamette Humane Society and needed to be established with a vet and to have their booster shot. All dates and clinic information was given at the time of scheduling with two weeks for them to obtain records. Today was our appointment and after rushing off work, taking my middle son to physical therapy, dropping my teen daughter at the movies then rushing home to grab kitties I was on my way to the appointment with ample time. Then on highway 20 I sat in stop and go while lights glowed up ahead. The poor girls were miserable in their cages while we hardly moved for 20 minutes. I called the vet to notify them of our situation. Julie answered and was noticeably annoyed. When informed of the apparent accident that caused delay she pulled a traffic report up and said accusingly that she sees that traffic is flowing. I guess I was lying? The four vehicles pulled over at the end of the bridge and multiple police say otherwise. Upon arrival she maintained a rude demeanor. I have 3 kids and 3 fur babies and I don't want anyone who treats us like we are a major inconvenience (when doing their job) to have anything to do with their well being. Maybe she was having a bad day or maybe she's not a people person but to put her in a position to deal with customer relations shows major lapse of judgement. Any one recommend another vet? Too long of a visit for the follow up mostly eating in an examination room instead of a quick visit it was sitting waiting in the Dr and having to refuse a muzzle for Buddy after having expressed clear concern for that kind of tx if prior experience having me swab his ears another 15 or 20 mins goes by and she returns solution in hand good news and bad news . Professionalism was claimed by a receptionist that responded to my issues .well their "internet" was not online and so their computer could not give an accurate charge for the visit nor could the solution be prorated as they greatly desired to charge for the appointment but there was no concern for the reason I was following up on the last two visits about his ear infection . Would not let the solution be paid for in the same manner as they charged for the visit stating in sure it's over for the visit but that's what we need and we will refund the difference , so basically I got ten mins of attention and was not allowed to leave but rather had to go back and get the solution and possibly I cost myself any refund of difference of normal follow up visit charge because of my honest review . There was little care n concern for Buddy's welfare it the time I had to waste in being responsible and bringing him back after a successful regimen given by the previous doctor . But for the service received it was way over charged for the value of effort as the Dr told Buddy now you're on my time 45 mins past scheduled time getting out of there just before four Nice professional follow up visit and after having to call to see if there was the solution still available (which was only 20.75) the upon driving back to pick up the solution I provided the written receipt which I explained it was charged in excess to make sure it was covered , but Buddy wasn't that much of a concern as charging 150.00 to cover us sitting in their little room for an hour plus priorities there were less than professional they had no way to know what charges would be for the follow up or 3rd visit where they preformed a basic check that could have been done in ten mins rather than dinking around before even coming in usually 2:30 doesn't mean 3:15 and consideration is a mark of professionalism so I had to go back get the solution as their server was back online or whatever and if course presenting the overcharged receipt resulted in nothing thanks to my expressing my personal view of the value of that particular visit . So they lied about a refund and they switched doctors in us mid stream the latter being far less valuable than the first introduction to Eastgate Vet Clinic . Unfortunately we won't be going back there because of their inconsistency and the way they acted as if they wouldn't get paid if we couldn't leave a card and information they could put in once their equipment was functioning again and seemed lost to be able to let us have what would take care of the minor traced of bacteria they found in the problem ear . It was upsetting as my Father and I had spent too much time waiting on their attendance to the appointment . I'm thankful for the first doctors claro ear treatment that was a full month of bliss for my puppy but the second has to blatantly make a point to Dismiss the fact that they made us wait in their little exam room on her time and was the star of the show that day . The check out was not something that made a case for their concern in the follow up visit scheduled I could have had a room at the Marriot for the cost of sitting bored in their accomodations . read more

Not happy - after spending a lot of money over the years with these people for shots, exams, thyroid medicine, blood work, etc., I had a cat that was 15 and was shutting down from old age. I had syringe fed her for a week, but she started refusing food and water. I called at 8:00am to make an appointment so we could lie her pass with dignity. They told me that the soonest they could squeeze us in was 2:30pm. Seriously? For a shot that takes all of 20 seconds?? To make a cat wait another 6 hours to die humanely?? Nobody in that clinic was willing to work us in between other patients for less than a minutes work? Very poor excuse for a vet practice. We tried calling other vets - same manta - "Oh no - we're all booked up. Can't see you for a few days." Translated - if they can't make any more money off of you by keeping your pet alive, you get pushed to the back burner and told to take a number. Greaaatt, so let the animals suffer because you see an end to your cash cow. So much for their hypocratic oath. We'll be searching for another vet. I used to take our dog to see Dr. Maxwell before I moved out of the state. She was always very thorough with her examination. Her appointments never felt rushed and she would take a lot of time to explain what was going on with my dog's eyes. Unfortunately, I had to move out of state after one year and was dreading having to re-establish care with another ophthalmologist. Dr. Maxwell went out of her way to make the transition as smooth as possible. Not only did she make detailed notes of my dog's eye condition and give me a hard copy of all his records, when I called her a month after my move she took time out of her busy schedule to research well-trained ophthalmologists in our new city and give me their contact information (she called back with great recommendations within 24 hours!). She truly cares for her patients and wants the absolute best for them. read more

I am a client of Eastgate and Ark their sister hospital, but I tend to go to Eastgate. They are wonderful vets, wonderful staff who keep their clinic very clean and they listen and really care for their clients pets. I would suggest them to anyone every single vet I've seen has been kind. I don't feel like they charge too much at all and there's no surprise costs. They're non judgemental and go out of their way to make sure my kitties feel safe and comfortable. read more

We were referred to Dr Maxwell by our regular vet for our older dogs eyes. Loss of star for smell in the vet coupled with having to wait 30 minutes in the lobby (guess that's why they have a keurig..). When we did get in Dr Maxwell was very thorough and assured us all was ok and symptoms were typical of the age. Spendy $85 appointment, but anything for our spoiled pooch. read more

Let me start out by saying our neighbors provide the majority of our Vetrinary care, but when our highly anxious rescue Chiweenie needed to see an Opthamalogist I took him to see Dr.Maxwell. My dog, Louie, is great with us but no one else. Dr. Maxwell said her primary concern was that he view his visit as a pleasant experience. She took her time with both of us. While I was there I asked if they would have time to do shots, "Sure, no problem !" So off we went to see Dr. Link who was equally as nice. I was fully expecting to pay upwards of 400.00 for my visit considering we saw a specialist and our total bill was half. It is so nice to know there is another place I can take my dogs when their primary doctors are not available. Eastgate is tops in my book! read more

I brought my corgi in recently to visit Dr. Van De Wetering because of a chipped tooth they discovered at Banfield where they told us our only options were to extract the tooth or get a root canal...both very expensive procedures and painful.Originally we were scheduled to have Dr. Van do a root canal but she discovered that all he needed was to have his tooth sealed which saved us nearly $1000! They did a great job and they were all extremely nice and honest. They even let me sit with him while he woke up from the procedure. I highly recommend Eastate and Dr. Van. read more

They are the best! They've done everything from normal exams and shots for our pets to piecing one of our dogs jaws back together after a dog fight. They even worked with us on payments. The staff is always friendly and our pets actually get excited when they realize where they are going......maybe that has a little to do with the yummy treats they spoil our pets with. :).
