We have been looking for some really good Chinese food since moving to Rolla from Long Island. Of course it was Sunday afternoon and lots of places were closed. Did a quick Yelp search and found East Sun about 20 mins away. Placed our order and headed out. The order was ready when we arrived. Everything was still hot by the time we got home. We order wonton soup, and egg rolls, chicken & broccoli, Moo goo Guy chicken & pepper steak. Everything was so flavorful and reminded us of the Chinese places on Long Island. I was in the middle of a cross country move and looking to eat something other than greasy fast food, so I was happy to see this restaurant pop up on the map. Upon pulling into the parking lot, one of the workers turned the open sign off and I walked back to my car utterly defeated. That same worker rushed to my car with bottles of soda, and when she saw tears in my eyes asked me what was wrong. I apologized and told her I was just so hungry and tired from driving the entire day and the last thing I wanted was Taco Bell. She rushed me into the restaurant, handed me two plates and told me to fill up whatever I wanted that was left from the buffet. I was sent away with those two plates, fresh cream cheese rangoons and two containers filled of their homemade desserts. Every single thing I ate was so delicious and truly just what I was looking for. The kindness and customer service of this place is unmatched. I am so grateful to the lady who decided to come check on me even though they had just closed. Cannot emphasize enough how amazing my experience here was. 10/10 will be back if I'm ever passing by again!! read more

First time ever patronizing this restaurant. Friends of mine recommended it and it did not disappoint. To begin with, the customer service experience was wonderful from the greeting to the goodbyes. Secondly, the food tasted good and was piping hot even after PU and driving home 20 min later. It was even out earlier than I had selected when ordering online. I didn't know about the buffet but it looked terrific! The only I noted was that the steamed dumpling fell apart rather easy and the egg rolls were smaller than I am accustomed to. Both were great however! As a matter of fact, the woman that greeted me even told me about the dumplings and that she put in an extra 2 to the order of 6. I'm happy that I have a good choice for my Chinese food hankerings. read more

They have TOFU!!! Omg and it was amazing! Delightful spot for take out/dine-in/buffet. We tried fried rice that was more just rice mixed with veg but still good. Sweet n Sour shrimp (decent but we were missing the peppers and onions that typically come in Sweet and Sour) that came with the sauce separately, and a wonderful general tofu. I did not have high hopes coming here. Not a big selection and the food did not look appealing. Most of the selections had a little left only. Surprisingly the taste of some of food was not bad. Actually had flavor. Some other stuff not so good. Definitely stay away from the sweet and sour chicken.....that chicken was so dry and tough.....bleh. Dessert selection looked old and dry. East Sun is located on Franklin Street, the main drag in Cuba, MO. We had high hopes for this place when we heard that it changed owners this past spring. As things go when you hope for something it doesn't always come true. We have our favorite Chinese place but it is a 40 mile drive, so having a local go to place would be great. We went for an early dinner around 5 p.m. The previous owners offered buffet style dining with very limited options and the new owners took over the same set-up. Foods offered were General Tso's chicken (bland), Sesame chicken (also bland), broccoli beef (tough), cabbage (been there a while), something with pork (won't eat it if I can't identify what's in it) to fried potatoes (hard). Crab Rangoon and egg rolls are also available as is unseasoned batter dipped chicken next to that red sweet sauce that is offered as sweet and sour chicken in most places. White rice is available in a separate rice cooker, fried rice and lo-mein are on the buffet. The lo-mein was swimming in oil and the fried rice was dry and hard. There is no Sushi. None of it was fresh and nothing looked really appetizing. Sometimes things taste better than they look but in this case they tasted as bad as they looked. I've eaten some exceptional Chinese food in places that didn't look like much but this place is geared towards tourists that flood our town in the summer. We won't return and several family members that live locally won't either. The blandness of the food and the unappetizing presentation earns East Sun only two stars. Buffet prices vary between lunch and dinner times and if Crab legs are offered on the menu. We've seen a closed sign at this restaurant on Sundays but the sign in the window when we went there said they are now open Sundays. They are closed on Monday. read more

When I moved from the city of St. Louis, I thought that I would never taste delicious Chinese food again. I was wrong. I've been ordering from and enjoying East Sun for the past three and half years now and they never disappoint. I'm vegetarian, so my immediate goto was the Hunan Style Tofu (which I emphasized I wanted painfully hot). The tofu is always perfectly cooked and paired with a sauce that is amazing. It's hot, but not too overbearing as to effect the flavor. It comes with very clean tasting, perfectly cooked, vegetable fried rice. You won't be disappointed if you decide to add crab Rangoon or vegetable egg rolls, either. The cream cheese sides savory as opposed to sweet, which I prefer. Many compliments to the chef. Finally, when you stop in to dine or pick up your order, you'll have the pleasure of meeting the sweet sweet lady up front! She is so friendly and nice! One of the best parts about dining at East Sun is talking to and seeing her! She makes you feel welcome. Do your taste buds a favor and stop by, or call and place an order. If you catch this place when it's busy the food is really great. Although it has a smaller Buffet they do a really good job at keeping it as fresh as possible during their busier times. If you come into place isn't busy it's like all buffets it's not as fresh. read more

Jumping off I-44 in Cuba - and checking in to the H.I. Express - we ventured into town for somehting to eat and ran across this restaurant. Wow - i've never had such tough chicken in my life - it must have been cooking for days. In fact - everything on the buffet had been cooking for days. It was all inedible. The crab-meat rangoons were so sweet that they were really dessert - or crab-meat candy. Eggdrop soup - had been simmering so long I had to scrape off the inch-thick scum that covered the pot - Save yourselfs - go to the grocery store across the street and buy a can of chow mein. They have a great Chinese buffet with a wide variety of food to choose from. The owner is a very pleasant person as are the workers.

Anyway...I like there...If you wanna taste what the really tasty cheesecake is , go and have a try... This buffet is pretty cheap and food is also not bad. Moreover, if you want, you can ask the cook for some special Chinese food, like sichuan ma po tofu... thin sliced potato in hot oil and soy sauce... really great for you guys to try. read more

It was good but not my favorite in the area. I heard they don't cook with MSG anymore so that's good. The desserts were very tasty. Some of the buffet food was cold but they were constantly adding new & trying to upkeep it. I gave it a try. Not sure if I will return. The owner lady was extremely nice & friendly. There is never much food in the pans on the buffet,the selection is poor. I have been here many times and then we just finally quit going! It is so sad this town needs a good really good buffet, they could pack them in if they would not be so cheap on their selection and amount of food they put out...if you have good food good selection....they will come...We are waiting to see if Yelp comments are going to do anything to improve them . Despite the negative reviews, I quite enjoyed this restaurant. The buffet selection was different than any other place I have tried. For instance, they have deep fried mushrooms with a Chinese style breading, and the fried Zucchini is outstanding; not to mention the General Tso chicken. The staff was friendly, and my wife and I (unbeknownst to them) were even treated to some beautiful Chinese singing; we found out later it was the waitress. Of course when we pointed it out, in typical Chinese modesty, she said her sister was better!
