My favorite thing about this hardware store (besides that it's NOT an insufferable "big box" experience) is that a customer can get a car key fob made here. I also like the fact that the vast majority of the employees who work here are helpful, and are actually knowledgeable about the products that are sold here. Prices can be a bit high, but that seems to be the overall trend these days. I'd certainly rather spend my money here, where my patronage is actually acknowledged and seems to be valued. It's also nice that Ace has a customer loyalty program. I have to say that I have gladly driven out-of-my-way, just to patronize this independently-owned business, and will continue to do so. Went to get screws for my bed slacks...the young man wasss helpful,he found the screw that fit my slacks on his very first try! Awesome!!! I was referred to the big names Home Depot and Lowe's but they were extremely out of my way and I purchased 16 screws(two different sizes) the bolt locks and bolts fr like $6 ain't no way I was gone spend that for the same thing at the big chains!!! The young lady at the register was polite and smiled the entire time Deon the moment she greeted me when I walked in And even at the checkout and our the door. I was happy that I did not hve to return bc I had gotten the wrong thing...it was a one and done. I needed a key fob for my jeep. They've been advertising on the radio station that I listen to. I called Ace Hardware in dealt with a guy named Lou. He had to order the key and he said it would take about a week to come in. He called me as soon as it came in and I scheduled an appointment to get it programmed. I was in and out about 30 minutes and they were by far the best price out of everywhere else. read more

I've noticed that service has declined in recent months. It once reminded me of the very friendly Mom and Pop hardware stores that are long gone. Now there is more of a nonchalant attitude there. It is convenient, but it seems like a different store than a year ago. read more

These folks are aces in my book. I get consistently friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable service. It's also awesome to walk in a store and get to the section we want in a couple of minutes. It's well organized and has an amazing variety of items for a store this size. There are other places with more selection, but the store can order a lot of things and get them in pretty quickly. We almost always find what we're looking for when we're working on household and garden projects - and again, it's awesome to have someone close at hand who's happy to help or give advice. They've become my go-to for bedding plants and vegetables as well. All-around awesome store, and always my first choice for hardware and household maintenance and cleaning supplies. Did I mention their kitchen wares? Canning jars are less expensive here than Kroger, and they have all of the other items you need for canning, making jellies and preserves, etc. Another note - and one of the main reasons I shop here whenever possible instead of some other places - as a woman and a bit of an introvert, some hardware and lumber supply stores can be a little intimidating. Unlike a couple of places around Memphis, I get as much assistance and courtesy as my husband when I go there for stuff to feed my woodworking addiction. read more

I was addicted to big box hardware stores for decades. It's like a kid in a candy shop. However, my trips to H* D*pot and L**wes were generally for mundane items like nails, bolts, small tools, and the truly common items. Over time, some locations of theses hardware monsters began cost cutting measures and it took forever to find some help when I needed it. The personnel seemed to try to be helpful, they were just spread thin. East Memphis Ace was reasonably close to home, so I tried these folks. I visited them for about a month, and could not find a downside over the monster stores. These folks changed management a little while ago, but it really had no effect on the quality of service and their willingness to assist with whatever problem I needed solved. The current staff is available and knowledgeable - they're just a bit less aggressive than the previous crew. If you need a hand, just ask. I can wander around and just shop without pressure, but one word to the staff and visitors the cavalry is called out to assist. The key and lock smithing service seems to now be limited to the store. That's fine with me. I have a locksmith for home when I need one. Parking is normally adequate. The store is stocked with tons of stuff and generally well organized for those determined to seek and find. They have a ton of nifty gadgets near the checkout, typical hardware store impulse items you don't need, but you'll buy them anyway. Close out items are in bins in the center aisle, dig a bit and you might be delightfully surprised at the bargains you find. My previous small hardware store was G*rmantown, I still use them for lawnmower parts and some Weber grill parts - decent folks, but not as anxious to solve your problem, in my opinion. Friendly employees that are more than happy to try and answer question(s) you may have. Cute selection of seasonal items. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because sometimes their regular inventory and shocked items are lacking and/or unavailable. However, the employees are happy to get the item asap if it is something you wait to get and because some of the prices are higher than the big box store. I was so happy with this store when it came to our neighborhood, in the 38117 area, Memphis, TN. I could find my needs and received intelligent advice; but now, this store is without professional guidance. The employees are untrained, and know nothing about product knowledge; and, seemingly don't know about ordering; the store is not stocked, Today, was my second trip to buy a bag of Ace Weed and Feed in the $ 20-something price range. The store was out on my previous trip. I was ask to point out the bag. After identifying the bag, the store was still out of stock. Other items I wanted to buy were not priced, or were in the wrong price section. I needed about $50.00 worth of merchandise, but I did not buy anything and I will not waste my time going back. I would give a 0 rating if possible. read more

I am done with Ace. This location is within walking distance of my house, so I'd like to continue patronizing the store, but I will not. Earlier in 2020, I think in the summer, I was frustrated with the staff there, because often when I went several employees and even some customers were very lax with their masks, so I decided not to return. Today, in January '21, I was in the area at an adjoining business and thought I would go into this Ace store for a few things I needed. My thinking was that not only could the staff have made progress with the masking issue, I would also rather patronize the closer location rather than drive to the Lowe's, which is 5-6 miles away, as opposed to the three blocks or so the Ace location is from my house. I was sorely disappointed. Not only were there multiple employees with no mask at all, but they were friendly and talkative to us, even getting up close on us to ask if we needed help. It seems the staff here did not get the note that not only was Tennessee recently the holder of the designation as the #1 Covid hotspot in the entire world, but that there are more aggressively infectious variants heading our way soon. So, even though the Ace is a decent store otherwise, and it is very close to my house, I will not be returning to the store, because the staff clearly do not have the customers best interest at heart. read more

This place has been in a decline the last several months. Service used to be really good but is now mediocre at best. Things are mislabeled or out of place and clerks rely on the internet for pricing. Had a guy try to sell me an item for $15 when it usually sells for less than 5. This was due to him finding a vaguely similar item on their website (items were very different). The only thing was when I said I wouldn't pay it and was going to their competitor, the clerk let me have it at a somewhat normal price (thus the second star). I doubt I'll shop here other than when it's 100% necessary or super convenient. read more

Giving 1 star because Yelp won't let me give 0. As a white female, when I asked to see the Yeti cups the cashier pulled all 4 styles of the cups out and let me hold all of them to see the differences with no hesitation; however when my black fiancé did the same (on his way to work as a leasing consultant in very professional clothing, might I add) he was asked to give the cashier his wallet because "people like to run off with these things." We both ended up buying the cups, but those will be the last purchases we make at Ace. read more

Friendliest employees, very helpful, always willing to walk you to locations of merchandise for added assistance versus just telling you on which aisle to look -- Store Manager is AWESOME! Haven't been to any other Ace's in Memphis area, so can't compare to this store, but I can't imagine any of the others being even better (You can't get better than the BEST) read more
