Just got the most amazingly soft organic cotton blanket (for our Queen Bed) and organic cotton sheet sets for our King. I'd bought a Queen organic cotton blanket from earthsake some 20 years ago - and it's still going! The quality from earthsake is incredible. The sheets are so soft - we just love them. Rather than strike a patronizing tone and explain to me that I should have reached out to the owner rather than post a yelp review, perhaps you could have asked why I did not reach out. When I came back in the store to be sure I understood correctly the person behind the counter told me they had called the owner and the owner told them to stand firm on the policy. So do not tell me that of course you would exchange it for the proper size. And do not ask me who I engaged with that day so you can throw them under the bus. Judging from other reviews here it seems clear there are issues with the staff which I assume stem from the top. It seems clear to me that now that there is a consequence you are saying the correct things. But in the store your maintain of policy of being difficult. I will sell the blanket, giving someone a nice discount, in the hopes that this review will cause you to look at your business practices and return to a place of integrity. read more

For a business claiming to be better for the environment, I can't even get near the door because of the toxic scented products. I suppose they are to con people who don't react immediately to the carcinogens in these scents, and a lot of business reek of similar stink, but Earthsake is the worst I have ever been near. A friend bought some sheets for us and it took forever to air them out. I'm looking for furniture now and this store showed up, so I thought I would warn people. This post is very overdue. I have been dissatisfied with my "firm" mattress after the first night of sleep. My partner and I have been purchasing beds from Earthsake for 25 years. We like very firm mattresses. We were directed by the sales associate to the Utopia bed. So last year we bought the Utopia Queen, 2 layers: firm on the bottom and medium on the top, thinking it would be similar to our previous mattress. The mattress was very soft to us. Heather recommended we exchange the top layer (medium) to a firm topper. We spent $100 more to get the top layer changed to firm (the topper was complimentary, the charge was for delivery). This 2 layer of firm is still very soft and squishy (and has a sag in the middle) and not at all comparable to our previous beds. We spoke with Heather numerous times and she said there is nothing more she can do. We feel very, very disappointed by our purchase. We will never buy another Earthsake bed. read more

Paid premium price for poor quality. Extremely disappointed. They also do not allow for returns or refunds. I tried submitting a review, but they filter reviews on their site and only post positive ones, so I feel deceived on many levels. I ordered the organic cotton sateen king split sheet set, and received sheets that don't feel like sateen at all. In fact, they are rough, and thin and feel cheap like something made in china I could've picked up at target for $30. I paid $340 for this set!! I did it because I am committed to buying American made products, and I also liked their environmental stance. However, I now doubt the veracity of anything they claim on their website. I also only purchased from them because I really wanted the sateen feel and they were the only American company I could find after hours of searching that carried sateen in split king. These sheets also made me feel incredibly hot. I'm a hot sleeper, but I've been sleeping under a comforter and a thick blanket with long pajamas with no problem. Last night I woke up at 4am sweating with these sheets and a comforter. Even after removing the comforter I had to open the window and take off my pajamas. Losing sleep from sheets is not a small matter as a mom of 2 young kiddos. Thank you for responding right away. I did not request my sheets to be expedited - it was within normal shipping Time: I ordered on June 3, and they arrived on June 11. I asked if this was possible, and I appreciate you accommodating that, but it doesn't make sense to me that you would use that request as an excuse or to place blame on me the customer for not making sure it's the right product. I just stumbled on to this page while checking for hours, actually, but I was floored to see such relatively low reviews, so I thought I would chime in with mine. It's been several years since I purchased anything here, but when I have, or when I was mattress shopping and laid on their offerings, all my experiences have been pleasant. Whether it's knowledgable and engaged salespeople or a nice range of products/pricing (my last purchase was maybe a ~$20 baby gift), it's a positive experience. I've also learned some brand awareness here, mostly about pillows and bedding. Like any retail store, dud products will be sold, but it can't be blamed on the owners. For instance, I bought some shower timers that suction-cup-stick to the wall and you can turn them, and it's a GREAT IDEA for water conservation. But, they fell off the shower walls (two different showers/locations) and broke and became landfill. That is awful. Is it Earthsake's fault? Nope. In fact, I'd not be surprised if they got this feedback and stopped carrying the product. Companies have "inside sales" reps who sell the company products to retail stores and typically get salary + commission. If I owned a store and my rep said this product was the bomb, I would believe them too. Anyway, I would be upset if this wonderful store, for locals by locals, were to cease existence, so just my two cents on years of experience there. They misrepresented their product. Multiple times I was told (once by the owner, Heather,) that the mattress would not change firmness. Marketing your product in a way that is not truthful is not okay. In response to my review the management has called my comments "slander." Shows you how much responsibility they actually take for mistakes. But this is just one of many issues. 1. I spent close to $2500 at this business and am left with a mattress that sinks after only one year. I based my purchase and exchange on how they told me the mattress would behave over time. 2. I had first purchased a pillow-top and then wanted to return or exchange it. They told me that this wasn't their policy. But it doesn't say this on any of my receipts. Then they acted like they were kind it allowing me to exchange this. For a $2500 mattress no less, that now sinks after I was told that their mattresses do not soften. Yup. Mattresses of poorer quality don't lose their firmness as much as this one has. 3. My mattress was over a month late. A whole month. Again I had to insist and have multiple communications just so the delivery fee would be refunded. Which doesn't even bring me back to zero. 4. Their staff member insisted that I never returned the pillow top and was rude to me by phone. 5 minutes later she calls me saying they located it. No apology. Overall, don't expect them to be honest or take true responsibility. They'll screw up and then you have to fight with them and they throw you a bone. Just look at their response to my comment. They respond by misrepresenting the truth. Their "record" of what happened cuts out many many things. I never once threatened them or asked for free product. I can afford to purchase them I don't need free products. I did tell them that I would post a poor review. Which I have. I did ask them to exchange this mattress which was sold to me via false marketing. To the management: The way you interpret your exchange with your customer, i.e., that I "complain" that the topper isn't right...that I "ask for free product" shows a severe lack of respect for your customers and is incredibly untruthful. I've never posted a review to yelp but it's worth it to warn people. I wish I had read the negative reviews before purchasing through this store. There is nothing on the website to indicate backorder of a product so you have to discover after that purchase that something was out of stock and will take a month to deliver. That said, the staff is extremely rude and they even suggested I was lying about a product's packaging and told me I'd be better off shopping at Amazon! I've never experienced anything like it. I stopped by 4th Street in Berkeley last Saturday and was early enough to easily find parking. As I was walking on, a self-absorbed Prius driver pulled out of her spot and nearly ran me over. I scooted out of the way as she stared off and oblivious to anything around her. Earthsake sometimes has a similar elitist vibe among its green inclined customers. I splurged on an expensive mattress five years ago. I love the mattress, it is excellent quality and very comfortable. My interactions with the staff sucked. I needed to change the delivery location and called the store and the employee was beyond rude, as if helping me was beneath her. They refused to accommodate me, unless I was willing to pay double shipping. I love my mattress and the idea behind it, but I will look at other opinions when it is time to replace it. I'm really not in the "fluff stuff," but I wandered into Earthsake tonight and found it's really a charming little store. There is a collection of eclectic stuff from furniture, silly junk, linen, and potpourri. My kid bought the "I am not a Cup" a few weeks back and now they have colored lids to match your mood. What was really impressive, the sales folk! These two women were just very kind and helpful. Like Yelper Anna W. yelped, you can just go in there, mess with all the fun stuff like the "The Tingler," which purports to cure many aliments and "shorten labor?" Finally tried out our new pillows last night and we love them!. It feels great to sleep on bedding that is completely natural. The products at this store are top of the line. The owner, Heather, was very patient with me as my search for the perfect pillow wasn't easy. We sleep with our child so my dream of a firm pillow has to wait. I ended up getting a firm wool wrapped latex pillow for my husband (I plan to borrow it sometimes!) and a wool only pillow for me and my child. We both love our pillows. Had a freakishly bad experience with Earthsake! Despite how pleasant the retail experience has been for me, to my surprise Earthsake is not at all the quality, professional, service oriented company I assumed it was. A year ago, I bought 2 sets of their premium Legna sheets (over $1,000 each). One of the fitted sheets disintegrated and has a big hole in it (I washed them per the instructions). When I called them in hopes of a straight forward replacement, the woman on the phone said someone would call back who could help me. No one did. I called again and got an email back saying please send photos of the sheet to prove what happened, which I did. Nothing back. I email *again* and they replied that they'd check with the Legna rep and get back to me. Heard crickets *again*. A month into this at this point, finally another woman calls and says they're real sorry, but they can't help me because it's been a year since purchase and that's just standard sheets wear and tear. However, she says, Earthsake would be happy to sell me the same fitted sheet again at a 10% discount. Incredulous, I laughed thinking she can't possibly be serious. She was. Had I known Earthsake was selling me disposable sheets at that cost, I never would have purchased them. I politely suggested she let customers know that at purchase. She thanked me and said sorry about that, that she'd look into if management could do something better for me. True to form, I never heard back. Earthsake is happy to sell pricey sub-par products that they do not stand behind. Really good customer lost! (I've driven from Marin County just to shop there many times and sent many of my friends and family there too). Really short-sighted decision for them given the power of word-of-mouth and how difficult it is to survive in retail with all the competition, not to mention how many smart brands today provide replacement for defective products, no questions asked. What a disappointment! The mattress was delivered wrong, twice! Deliveries did not show up when scheduled, if at all. But the really infuriating part was that the mattress, once delivered, was not 100% pure latex as advertised or promised! If you have purchased one of their 100% Pure Botanical Latex mattresses we would urge you to open it up to make sure that it is not partially filled with polyurethane as ours was. While the people we dealt with at Earthsake were nice enough, after two months of trying to get the mattress that we had ordered, we gave up. They did refund us fully, but considering the aggravation, inconvenience and faulty product that they delivered, we felt that refunding us should have been the very least that they do. So, I am very lucky to have one of the revered hand-made in SF McRoskey mattresses. A lovely and really generous graduation gift. However, finding the right foundation has been, well, a pain in my back as I could not afford the $3K for the McRoskey box spring and all of my in-the-meantime alternatives have failed------oh, I rue the day I met those deeply ridiculous Ikea slats. Earthsake popped up in my Yelp search of local mattress folks. I noticed online they had a reasonably priced, sold alone (apparently a ridiculously HUGE issue for lots of mattress stores!) made-to-order pine box spring with unbleached cotton casing for under $400. I also saw online the two-six week turnaround because they are custom made, but decided to give a call and rely on my 10 years of hard-labor-in-retail karma, when I often called all the nearby stores to find the last of something-or-other for my customers. Oooooooooooooooooooh yeah did my call pay off---thank you Earthsake! Called Earthsake at noon-ish today, a Friday. The kind Alli answered, said the box spring was indeed special order (4-6 weeks due to the approaching Seasons!), BUT that she would happily check their nearby warehouse. Spoke again at 2PM, they had a queen box spring in the warehouse! And, wait for it, I could pick up today before 4PM. (My back got hyphy!) I dropped by the store, they took a check (lost my ATM card and was forced to use my Simpsons checks--yup, the ones with Marge and Bart). Then, my dear and kind friend with a van and I headed to the warehouse. (Please note escaping Fourth St on a Friday at 3PM may have been the hardest part of this experience.) The kind, and dog-friendly, warehouse team helped load, we braved a little Gilman (yes, even the train came by and blocked traffic) as well as the Eastshore Freeway on a Friday, AND by 4PM the same day (a Friday!) my McRoskey is happy (properly supported and ventilated) and I am typing this. I've spent a lot of money here, buying organic mattresses, mattress covers, and wool pillows. Went in today to add one of their wool comforters to my son's crib because I saw a 20% off bedding sale on their website. When I went into the store and found the product, I asked to confirm that it was on sale. The saleswoman said the mention of the sale was a mistake on the website. I asked them to honor it, since it was their mistake. She appeared to have an associate make a phone call, but the answer was "no, we will not honor that sale, and if you look at the website, the mention of the sale has been removed already." I was very disappointed but I went ahead with the purchase as I'd already driven quite a ways to get the comforter for my son. While walking to my car, I refreshed my browser on my iPhone to check their website and it STILL SAID 20% off bedding. That took me from disappointed to angry, as I feel like the salesperson lied to me. For an expensive local business that I imagine relies on repeat customers and word of mouth, this was a costly mistake. I feel taken advantage of, and although I really like their products, I will not shop here again! I have also mentioned this business on lamorinda moms email group and database (distribution in the thousands), and I will be removing my positive recommendation of them as a source of organic mattresses and bedding. read more

A few times a year they have really great sales and I have saved a good amount on large ticket items, such as a loft bed for my daughter and a king size wool comforter for myself. The quality of everything I have purchased over the last decade has been outstanding and long lasting. Disappointing service and a lack of products. I saw a product on their website which I wanted so called their Berkeley store. I was told they had it in my size. I was also interested in seeing another 2 products also shown on their site. I was eager to go pick up what they promised to have in stock. Jumped into the car and made the long harrowing journey from SF to Berkeley during rush hour - plenty of near misses during my loooooong drive over. When I got to the store, I asked about the other products first. No, they didn't have that robe I scoped out in my size. No, they didn't carry the poncho they showed on their site anymore. But, ah, the fabled comforter. They have that right? Sure, I was told all about it. I go to the register and...ah, woops...they can't find the comforter in the size even though inventory says they should have one. So many minutes are wasted as they futz around trying to figure out where it might be. In the end, pffft, nothing in stock, so would I like to special order it? Answer: no. And I wish I hadn't bothered wasting the gas, time, and energy to get out to this store. Also, to corroborate what other reviewers have mentioned, the service gals need a lesson in courteous service. I don't think they're necessarily being disdainful based on customer appearance, but something's off about their demeanor. One didn't know much about the products and had to keep calling for help from the other gal who was in her own world puttering around the store (nobody else was in there for the forty minutes or so I spent there). I used to ignore this store completely, until I had my second baby and started to pay attention to textiles, towels, and soft and cuddly things again. With sales person Beverly's recommendation, I bought a "luxury" (ie expensive) Italian quilt for my baby, among other things like baby gifts and hand towels for a girlfriend who was having knee surgery. I love everything I bought. I love the quilt so much I'm going to take it with me to a solo trip to remind me of my baby. I'm a huge textile freak and have different hand towels stacked high in my cabinets, everything from Japanese tenugui to Turkish towels, and the variety and attention to quality is really amazing here. I always find something new. I have to say Beverly's knowledge about the stuff is the reason I keep coming back to browse and buy. She doesn't necessarily know the prices (she just refers to the catalogue for that), but she really gets what I'm looking for, and the subtle nuances like a certain color or a particular hand. Now I'm drooling over some over the top expensive bedsheets that she pointed out... I will probably get a set to celebrate my birthday. They have very small collection of cards and nice smelling soaps, candles, lotions, earrings. small collectibles, nice robes, PJs, towels, bathroom accessories, bed sheets, bedroom furniture, mattress etc.. A bit expensive but I guess, they are very well & freedom made ;) (most of them are French or Italian make). I felt, it's more like a luxury bath accessories/textile/collectible store rather than a furniture store. I bought a soap and a card and the person at checkout made few mistakes running my card through and kept on apologizing. Also,the store is mostly useful for moms with infants, as the store carries very nice cribs, bedding and stuffed animals for babies. All of them look so sweet and cute! I first learned of Earthsake through an ad in Alameda magazine back in 2007. I really wanted a "green" mattress from them...until I realized I would have allergic reactions to the contents and the mattress would take four to six weeks for delivery. I settled for a Sealy Posterpedic from another store. It wasn't green, but it sure beat sleeping on the floor for another several weeks! Earthsake features high quality (read: expensive!) bedding, towels, candles and gifts in addition to mattresses. I recently purchased a bath brush and bath mits made from all natural ingredients. These cost considerably more than their [Walgreen's] counterparts, but they last longer and feel better on the skin. read more

According to the cashier, the bad pair was to be sent back to the manufacturer so they'd be aware of the defect. This was my first purchase from Earthsake. I truly enjoy the quality of their Pure Grow Wool comforter, latex pillows. and organic cotton/bamboo sheets - which feel softer after each wash. There was a slight misunderstanding about a set of towels I purchased. They are MicroCotton towels with eco-friendly dyes, but the cotton itself is not organic. This caused some upset for me, but one of the owners of the store contacted me to explain that so many customers love the rich texture of the towels, they continue to carry them. All in all I am happy with my purchase and appreciate the thoughtfulness and care given by the owner to clarify things. P.S. I'm sleeping like a baby! read more

Buyer beware! I purchased a rather pricey mattress at this shop. Their 'guarantee' was not honored without a MAJOR fight. AND I had to fight them tooth and nail on every issue. The mattress I picked out was not what was delivered. I went back to the shop and sat on the one I picked out. It was vastly different! The mattress that was delivered was HARD as a rock. I had to fight with the employee and the owner about this. They would not give me the owner's phone number until I really put up a stink. They FINALLY accepted that they would have to replace my rock hard mattress. I called repeatedly to get information as when this would take place, no one was forthcoming or followed up with me. FINALLY I was told that on a particular Friday, I would have a new mattress. That did not happen. I specifically told them when I was out of town the following week. No one followed up with me..and guess what? The delivery company called me when I was out of town. Again, no one followed up as to what happened. I called Earthsake upon my return to town, this time they gave me the owner's direct line. I was told by the owner that I should call the factory and argue with them! WTH? This is not my job. I am (was) a customer... meanwhile, my body ached from this terrible mattress.
