It's an interesting story on how I came to be at the Boyd Raceway this (past) Saturday. Basically a…read morefriend of mine is a professional pyro-technician (Is that a word? Anyway, he puts on firework shows). The Boyd Raceway firework show for the 4th of July was rained out and this was the rescheduled day. I was out there to help with the show (setting up, and then loading / re-loading launch tubes during the show - Talk about a blast!). So after showing up well before the races even start, and getting my special "pit pass" wrist band, we start setting up the show. Once that is done, we have some time to kill before the races start and even more time until the show. So I end with a lot of time to do some exploring and watch plenty of racing. This was a very busy night as there were a lot of makeup races due to all the rain earlier in the month. The classes for tonight were: IMCA Modified, IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Southern Sport Mod, IMCA Hobby Stock & Mini Stock and also featured the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Cars & Smiley's 305 Sprint Cars. The sprint cars were particularly amazing as I could not believe the speed they would reach on the rack. Oh, the track. So this is a short oval dirt track, which I do think makes thinks very interesting. It takes a different kind of racing skill to keep it together on a dirt track. Most of the racers did a great job, but some did not. Now factor in that only about 1/3 of the track has any kind of a wall or barrier, and where we were set up for the show was not one of those places. We saw several cars come flying over the banked track. Very thrilling! Even though I was working, this turned out to be a very cool introduction to the Boyd Raceway, and I've kind of made a mental note to come back and enjoy the raceway from the stands. It struck me a a very unique and interesting way to spend a Friday. There is a concession stand, and the food looked OK, though I did not try it. It also seemed bringing a cooler was allowed, but you might want to double check on that. PS. See the website (http://boydraceway.net/directions_to_boyd.htm) for map and location, as Google does not map Private Road 4786 (Yahoo! does though), which is what you want. 4786 is off County Road 4781, just south of FTM 4028. Yes, you are practically in the middle of nowhere!

Props to the rest of the crew; they seem to really enjoy their job. Aside from that, the racing was pretty fun. The karts had great handling and ran quickly. The young man working the register was polite and took the safety briefing very seriously. He's the type of guy you want at the register dealing with clueless customers such as myself. The young men running the track were great. They were polite and accommodating. They helped my short daughter get set up correctly. They made sure we were set and just laid back, nice guys. Was it pricey, 15 laps for $450, but our group had a ton of fun. The track is a bit worn down and could use some maintenance along with the cars themselves. The cars were inconsistent. I had three different cars; each one felt different. My last car drifted a lot, despite driving it about the same as the other cars. Their helmets were old and could use an upgrade. I'm glad I wore my sunglasses and kept the visor up to see more clearly.

From their website, we found enough information to spark our interest. They have an oval shaped, semi banked clay track that is of a mile. We've enjoyed dirt track racing (years ago), so we decided to go. The website showed this event... ALL STAR SHOOTOUT iStock, Southern Sport Mods, IMCA Modified The 3 classes of race cars are unknown to us, but we were undeterred. The cost was $20 (or $15 for seniors or kids). Reasonable. We had a great, 4 hours of high octane fun. There were many heats in each class of car that resulted in 3 final races to determine the champions. Lots of thrills all evening. It was nice that we were allowed to bring our own coolers with adult beverages. I assumed that it was because they don't have a license. Sure enough, the concessions area didn't sell beer. So, if you like it, you better bring it. The concessions area did have a nice selection of burgers, nachos, frito pie, etc. and soft drinks. All are very reasonably priced.

You sit on metal bleachers but they have a railing and feel very solid to walk and sit on. The track is dirt and expect to breath in so.e dust as cars race around. The night that we went the races went from 7 till after 11. They have a snack area with soda. No beer but they do allow you to bring in beer and drinks and food which almost everyone seemed to be doing. Can't wait to go again
