Mandala Springs Wellness Retreat Center - Family time doesn't get any better with this view!

Mandala Springs Wellness Retreat Center

Mandala Springs is a campground that offers traditional camping options as well as glamping…read moreoptions. My husband and I rented one of the cottages and it was great! It was very cozy and had great amenities, including our own bathroom and kitchenette. I adored the little porch of our cottage. It was a great spot for stargazing at night. The grounds are very peaceful and quiet, and you can catch sight of some critters wandering around the grounds sometimes. My husband and I had a few animal sightings here, including a deer right outside our cottage! The facilities include a pool, a garden, a studio (which wasn't offering any classes due to COVID), archery, hiking trails, fire pits, and even a wood-fire oven you can use for cooking pizza! They also have bikes and water activities which were free to use. The hiking trails have vista points where you can meditate or catch a beautiful sunset or sunrise. There's something really peaceful about getting up super early in the morning to watch the sun rise and nature wake up along with it. Some things to note (from what I can remember): -No cooking meat or eggs on the grounds. -No pets allowed. -No drinking or smoking. I'm not really an outdoors person. I usually prefer to travel to places with more activities and sights to see, so we also explored the towns around the lake nearby besides just staying here the whole weekend. But I appreciated the nature and tranquility that Mandala Springs offered. It's perfect if you're looking for a short weekend getaway from city life.

I was a local kid who worked my summer jobs cleaning cabins, then at the pool snack bar and then, finally, at the coveted lifeguard position at the two pools. All the "city kids" would come every summer and I had my "summer friends" when I wasn't in school. It was magical. I now live in San Diego and my children can't understand that magic so I try to compare it to movie, "Dirty Dancing." They are jealous. I don't blame them; Pine Grove in the 1980s was something out of a movie. Anyone who was there has endless stories about the place. I read someone on here say the new owners keep the local "riff raff" out... I don't know what that means but back when I was a local kid working there, the city kids and local kids loved meeting every summer. I hope that kind of kindness isn't lost on this generation.

The reviews were sparse and mixed but the space looked beautiful online. I reached out directly by email to Joe, describing the type of event I wanted, and he was very responsive and helpful and generous. First of all, if you read nothing else, I have to rave about the infrastructure. Joe and the folks over there are really bright, mindful, and hardworking - and you can see from what they're building. The bathroom/shower complex near the campground is new and well built. A stone's throw away, the pool area is beautiful and clean, with a majestic lawn to run around on and great facilities. We rented the Mooncat Tiny House and the Glamping Tent and they are both cute, well proportioned, and well designed. The owners have beautiful things and great taste - we found the kitchen stocked with Japanese knives and Staub & Le Creuset cookware. They've cleverly set up mesh WiFi around the whole area that, while not reliable enough for Zoom calls, is impressive. I got a chuckle when a friend, sitting on a stump, asked me for the WiFi password. Even the structures that aren't new are taken care of; things are lived in and not luxury, but nothing is dilapidated. When I first got there, it took some time to get my bearings. The property is rather large (we never really did explore the east half of it) and there are a lot of structures, some inhabited and some available to rent. Folks of all stripes seem to live there at all times of year. I think the thing that first threw me off is you're never TRULY out of eyesight or earshot from someone, despite the woodsy environ. There's often the odd person or small group sitting on a porch, working on a project, hanging by the pool, or walking a dog - it's more like an unstructured neighborhood in the woods than a secluded campground. I soon met Joe and found him to be a helpful and well-meaning fellow. In time, folks in my group struck up conversations with the other folks around. Noah and one of the kids came to clean out the glamping tent for us and were very welcoming as well. Everyone was friendly and I came to realize this was a community of folks who had come here - perhaps some temporarily - to get away from the outside world and find some time and space for themselves. The attitude as I see it was rather healthy and positive. People there seem to be generous of mind and spirit. I was nervous that our group - 30-somethings drinking and floating in the pool, yelling and cursing at one another as we played games like spikeball and cornhole - would be an unwelcome nuisance, but the residents were really kind, accepting, and even fascinated by our antics. I would recommend Pine Grove highly to anyone, but mostly I think I've found a gem that I hope is around for years to come. I think when we all have young kids and want a place to spend a quiet weekend where they can explore, this will be our oasis. If you're reading this, thanks for being such great hosts, Joe, Noah, & everyone!

The cabins are rustic and you must clean them at the end of your stay which isn't hard as they provide mop and broom for you. The pool is cold and refreshing and the overall atmosphere is friendly. Long term families who come year after year are appreciative of having a stable, familiar place to reunite with their families and friends year after year. They're old school and it's good. My extended family has been coming to WP for 44 years now, and while I can't always get away from the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley life to join in, I appreciate every moment I spend here. It's just regular people from the Bay Area escaping the madness for a little while, reconnecting with family and friends and enjoying a beer (or two...) It is as enjoyable as you make it. While there is a pool for adults and kiddos, bocce ball, tennis court, bbq area, swings and playground, there are also porches on each cabin, which is a key ingredient for us. Time spent on these porches growing up with family and friends have created memories that will last a lifetime, and I thank the Strickler family for every one.

There's a restaurant in the premises but you have to make a reservation. The food was delicious. What I didn't like were the sheets. They had a strong chlorine smell. Still water had the same taste. I couldn't sleep properly thanks to the guests upstairs making noise at 5am on a Sunday. Who is awake so early? Jeez. It's common in old houses to hear the voices and footsteps I guess. Just ask to get a top room if you have a light sleep like me. Also, when receiving the receipt on the email, it'd be better if it explained the detail instead of just the $.
