The painting team, led by John, were amazing with the quality of caulking and painting being second to none (to my surprise the cabinets were installed as bare wood, and then caulked, finished and painted in place; however, the taping, masking, screening, etc. for over-spray were excellent with zero problems). And at the end of each day, Peter would send an email with photos of the work-in-process, outlining the day's accomplishments and work schedule for the next day. Her enthusiasm, taste, style, persona, eye for detail, organization skills, project management, and overall friendliness are beyond reproach, Myself and my wife had been on the fence about selling or renovating and were losing hope of finding a contractor until my wife found Krisanna and Recast Homes. From the moment we met her both my wife and I felt at ease, relaxed and the weigh of what seemed like the world was lifted. It was now an easy decision and we were staying in our home! One thing that jumped out at us and was a fantastic bonus is that she is not only a GC but also an interior / exterior designer. We spoke with Krisanna about remodeling our kitchen, making our laundry room more functional, updating the downstairs powder room, changing the flooring, redoing the stairs, building a loft and adding a wall to separate the dining room from the front room. What happened next blew us away! She took all the ideas that we had and then added to and enhanced each of them. Krisanna laid out a clear and concise timeline for the project and was able to tell us what was happening on each day and week for the duration of the renovation. Once we committed to the project the scale of the project became apparent to us but Krisanna was able to get ahead of any issue and would meet with us in person and by phone to discuss colors, materials, style, lighting. Once all the decision were made the demo started on time and on the day we had planned. Like every renovation project there are always unforeseen issues and we had water damage at the back door, powder room and under the kitchen island from slow leaks due to old bad CPVC piping. Krisanna immediately informed us of what was found, had a plan in place and repairs scheduled the same day. She would also arrive to the house and say things "like I have been thinking about this wall ..... we should leave a section open at the top for added light" and it made the wall 10x better. The samples she brought, the colors, paint, the furnishings, accessories, stove ideas, kitchen pendants and faucets were all exactly what we had wanted but could not put together on our own. Her help with the flooring was incredibly and spent many hours with us at CFM helping us decide on what worked best for the cabinetry color scheme. The finished product is jaw dropping and the quality of the finish is outstanding. We are delighted with how the house looks and how functional it now is. I have an office again, we have a Loft for a kids play room, a beautiful kitchen, front room, dinning room, family room and the laundry room is exceptional. If you have project and need a general contractor or designer then the only realistic option is Krisanna and Recast Home. She is simply the absolute best!!!

He checked in with us throughout the process to ensure that we were going to be satisfied with the finished product and we are. I would definitely contract with them again.

The scope of my project was complete door replacement (I supplied pre-hung doors and hardware) and…read morereplacement of a rotting chimney enclosure for my home in Gresham. I have worked with many contractors over the years and my experience with Spruce Box was one of the worst I have worked with for small projects, due to a lack of good project management, quality control and professionalism in addressing quality of work issues. The painting of doors was terrible (trying to use cheaper paint than agreed upon and without tinting to match existing) and remain so, even after painting of some doors three times. They sparyed doors in my garage instead of a shop ( assuring me the results were equivalent) but the painting was a disaster because the painter worked for residential developers and not high-end interiors. Why did they hire this painter for my job and why did they not fire him after his many mistakes??? The hardware installation required re-installation in several instances due to not reading instructions and or lack of experience installing hardware. Trim Paint on the exterior siding and the chimney enclosure requires a second finish coat of paint. The patio door paint is discoloring and scratches off easily - probably due to prep or number of coats of paint. Bathroom door swings open by itself. On the plus side, the crew was generally friendly, kept the house clean and corrected their work when I pointed it out to them. however, many mistakes should have been caught by them. I believe overlapping scheduling of projects led to a rushed job and was even told as much by the crew on a couple of occasions. Response to the issues during the work was minimal and required my constant attention. Now (5 months after the work) and a walk through to identify the issues, I am told by Xavier (owner) that they had barely broken even on the job financially, and would they therefore would not follow-up on the correction of mistakes or paying me to make these repairs on my own. They no longer return my calls, and have essentially ghosted me. This might happen with a bad friendship but should never happen in a business context. I WOULD NOT HIRE SPRUCE BOX NOR RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE FOR ANY PROJECT BECAUSE THEY ARE UNPROFESSIONAL, DO NOT STAND BY THEIR WORK AND THEIR HIGH PRICES ARE NOT COMMENSURATE WITH THE QUALITY OF THEIR WORK.

When I contacted Steiner to inquire about their price structure and how they go about their business I was even more impressed. I contracted with McNearney Construction in 2007 and it has haunted me ever since. I had both of…read moremy bathrooms redone with tile and also my kitchen floor. First, in the main bathroom I had requested the small built out wall to be removed when the old tub and surround were taken out and tile put in - this was not done. I came home and it was partially tiled already, so I let that slide as it did look good. The bathroom came along fairly well upstairs then the basement bathroom was completed. The kitchen tile was to go in last and on another invoice. When the bathrooms were completed I had paid a deposit for the kitchen and the crew was onto another job. I inspected my bathrooms (he was not around when I got home from work to inspect them, so I did the walk around on my own) I noticed a couple of things right away that were wrong with the upstairs bathroom. The towel rack that was on the wall with an oak backing was not moved for the tile installation, it was instead tiled around (see photo). The shower head, knob and tub spout were all out of alignment. They slant to the side when looking up from the drain. The bathroom downstairs had a hole in the ceiling in the shower and the upstairs bathroom had part of the drywall ripped away when the old surround was taken out, and this was not fixed. I called him to ask about these items and he said he would come out and look at the spout issue. I stayed home to meet with him and we looked at the bathroom, he attempted to move the spout over a bit but I asked him how he can move this with the tile installed. he informed me that there was a beam behind where this was installed so he had no choice. I questioned him about this, stating couldn't you have moved the 2x4 so this would not be this way? he just sort of shrugged his shoulders and said he always puts them in along the pre-existing beam. I stated well now it looks funny, this is not right. We then looked at the towel rack and he said the towel rack was on the wall and in the way. I asked him why didn't you take it down the move it over the inch and a half for reinstallation so it didn't interfere with the tile. Now the tile is around the top of the wood and ruining the wood plus I cannot move it now. He stated "it was up and I didn't know how to take it down" to which I showed him the wood putty (pretty obvious already) covering the screws and that it is easy to remove. He also said he did not notice the sheetrock in that room or the hole in the shower ceiling downstairs. I was pretty aggravated over this and his "not giving a crap" attitude. After several weeks I had not heard from him about my kitchen floor and sent him a message. He stated he could do it and told me the cost. I reminded him that I had given him a deposit of 50% already on check number ---- and he should have been in touch with me about this to complete the job. He said he would come do it but needed the money up front, I told him no come do the job and I will pay when done and we can talk about these other issues you have not responded too. He sent his assistant out to do the floor and I told him I needed Charles to call me when done. During this installation I did not have enough tile, which I purchased based on how much square footage of coverage I would need. The cases I bought should have been more than enough but - they weren't and I could not order the same tile anymore. I had to get like tile but different enough that you could notice easily. The floor was put in and away they went, never to reach out to me about my issues. After several months I was having new cabinets installed and I was informed that my tile floor was not even close to level. That contractor showed me and of course I was pretty upset about this. I wrote a letter to McNearney explaining the issues - again - and how upset I was. I received no response. Several more months went by and I wrote again, no response. I did this over the course of a year and a half, during this time some of the tiles in the kitchen had cracked. I replaced the kitchen floor and was informed by the manager at CFM (contract furnishings mart) that the cement used on the ceramic tiles I had was not the right type of cement, eventually they all would have come up and broken due to this. They wanted the contractors name so they could put him on the do not use list. When the floor was taken up, we discovered that the hardy board was hardly screwed down as well, causing some unevenness in the flooring. I was not aware that you could go to a contractors board and lobby a complaint until after it had been 2 years. Had I known....... Anyway, I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Bottom line....our job came out well. The road to get there was tenuous and slightly frustrating…read more Yeah...grab a coffee and sit back because this is going to take a while.... ;-) ** I'll preface this review by saying that we were first time remodelers. At least where we hired someone. Up to this point we've done a number of projects ourselves. Take that however you will....contractors will likely assume we were a pain in the tush, while other first timers may see this as helpful. Charles is a nice guy. Lots of stories that will leave you shaking your head. ;-) - He seems to have certain materials/items that he prefers to work with, that he's worked with in the past. You'll need to speak up if you want something other than what he'll automatically steer you toward. You should have a good idea of what you want when you talk to him. He doesn't provide a rendering of the project so you need to be able to picture it in your head or work with a designer who will provide that hard copy visual source for you. - Unfortunately, and I'm truly sorry for him for this, he had some personal issues arise at the start of our project. We tried to be patient and understanding, and I think he would agree with that. Those problems resulted in him hardly ever being on site. He has a friend/employee who is a really nice guy who works with him. After my spending a year looking at reviews, licensures and trying to find a contractor who does the work himself, it was frustrating that the friend (who we later learned has an engineering degree but isn't a licensed contractor) did a good portion of our work. Mixed feelings there as we were messing with the main structure/support point for our home. We were repeatedly told that Charles would be doing all of this work, when in fact he didn't. Again...personal problems that took him away. - Be sure to have a discussion about permits....and be sure to get them. - Communication wasn't stellar. A number of unanswered emails. At some point, about a week before completion, Charles said that he must have accidentally sent one of my emails to the trash because he'd just found a bunch of them in there. Hence the lack of communication. - After our house was torn apart and we were living in a bedroom, the problems hit and discussions were had that shouldn't have been...... Excuses given for why we should pay sooner than originally planned, etc....that kind of stuff...which made me more cautious than I should had to have been. Nothing illegal...just stressed me out and left me wondering if the job would get done. He was clearly stressed and under a lot of pressure in his personal life....again, an unfortunate situation. - As I said, the end result is very good thanks to the great cabinetmaker, electrician and plumber. Drywall and tile both had to have repair work done before we would sign off. The small amount Charles did was done well. - His payment schedule was in 1/4s...1/4 down, 1/4 at material selection, 1/4 at start, and 1/4 upon completion. A bit scary...but we did it. When the job was almost complete...we still needed the bar installed and the final inspection done...he asked for his final payment. We refused. The minute the final came back okay I transferred the money to his account. Done. To ask for payment before completion is absurd...especially as it was spelled out, "Balance due upon completion", on his contract. - The contract itself is pretty vague....be sure to sit down with it and spell out anything you want to have made more specific. We didn't have trouble with the contract...just wanted you to know that it's very very general. - When we signed on, Charles listened to what we wanted and did a good job of putting it into action. I believe he knows what he's doing and does it well. I think he's good at envisioning things and knows what the end goal will be. It would be great if he would give more updates and information to keep the homeowner informed....so they aren't twiddling their thumbs in a corner trying to figure out what the heck is/isn't happening with the job. Our experience, unfortunately, didn't go as smoothly as it could/should have and I didn't appreciate the work being done by someone else after we'd been told that Charles would be doing the work himself. Had he not had the personal situation then things would likely have gone better.

David was prompt, arrived when he said he would, was extremely polite, and made sure he understood what I was after. Tim, the owner, followed up to make sure the job went well and if I had any questions. I'd highly recommend SunWest for your projects and if they can't do what you are after, they would know of reputable and quality other providers. Give SunWest a call!

We just bought a new/old house outside Clackamas that was stuck in the 80's. A close friend had…read morerecently used this company to replace their roof in Alameda and were so please she insisted I call Tim, the owner for help. Tim came out and accessed our project and the main issues that needed to be addressed right away. Our home inspector had discovered that the water damage noted in the basement was coming from poorly grouted tile in our bath and every time we showered water was running down our wall. We knew when bought the home we would need to attack the bath right away and Tim's professional, cost conscious suggestions made us feel we were in good hands. Communication was great, he was on the job and answered all of our questions. We decided to do more work than what we initially intended to do and he referred us to a great plumber who was just as professional as Sun West. Sun West demo'd walls, moved a doorway and window and totally re did all the tile and trim in the bath. We were very pleased and love our new bath!!!!! When we are ready for the next phase of our project we will be calling them again.
