Desktop Solutions - This is the kind of work that I received. The keys are all crooked, raised, and about to pop off. This cost me $300.

They quoted me $269 dollars to replace my keyboard. I called a place across town that quoted me $129 and another $159. If you need it done fast they charge $75 up front, which is worth it for speed except that you don't realize till after that their quote for repairs is higher than everyone else and at that point you've sunk the $75 whether you get it repaired there or not. When I brought the other quotes to them they were inflexible and got rude about it. That would be bad, but the worst part is what they did to my computer. When I got my computer back, the keys on my keyboard are crooked and raised. Many look like they are about to pop off. They also feel different when I type. I have added 4 photos of my keyboard to the images section to show you what I'm talking about. I called Apple and told them that this apple authorized store is doing this kind of crappy work. My iMac had a critical failure to boot, so I called Apple support and they walked me through…read morevarious things to try in case it was software related and fixable. It wasn't, but I had an Applecare warranty (Consumer Reports rates it one of the best warranties available and my years of Apple usage confirm this), and so they helped me find a local Apple tech to address my problem. We chose Desktop Solutions; they've been in business in Chattanooga almost as long as I've been an Apple user--around twenty years, so I figured this was likely the best place to go. My experience with Desktop Solutions was firmly middle-of-the-road; I would have given three stars, but Yelp's designation of two stars (Meh. I've experienced better.) seemed apt. The problem was fixed (new logic board ordered and installed under warranty, so no cost to me) and my iMac was back in my hands within their anticipated time. There are two reasons I've given them an okay rating: 1. I had two different interactions with different employees. Each was adequate, though not on the level of what one can expect at, say, the Genius store or whatever Apple is doing in their stores these days. This is not a complaint so much as a suggestion that if management reads this, they can take it under advisement. 2. When I was picking up my iMac, as I put one hand under to lift, I felt some dust/grit along the bottom edge. As I looked down, it was clear there was a dust bunny hanging down from the area where the cooling fans run. No big deal, dust happens, so I wiped it off and brought my computer home. Next day, I'm doing some work on the computer and I notice more dust bunnies hanging down. So I'm sitting there feeling around the bottom edge of my machine and I end up pulling a fairly surprising amount of accumulated dustbunnies out of the bottom of my iMac. Now this to me seems like some laziness on the part of the tech crew, because I'm fairly certain that it would be easy to vacuum that stuff up while you've got the innards exposed and I would think that a company that wants repeat business from Apple users would care about this sort of thing, much as better car dealerships will wash a car before returning it to patrons. Soooo, take that as you will. My computer seems to be working just fine now, so the repair seems to have been adequately completed. I truly wish I could give a more positive review and hope that this review will result in better experiences for other customers.

The same day, I requested a return and sent the item in the original packaging with the new tracking label affixed. USPS tracking says the package arrived at the receiving post office on Oct 9, only to see the post office was unable to deliver the package on Oct 10 becuase the business was closed. It's now been 11 days since my return arrived at their local post office without being delivered. I assumed maybe there was an issue with USPS so I filed a 'Missing Mail' request yesterday. This morning I received a call from a very polite Postmaster in Chattanooga who informed me they have tried delivering my package every day since it arrived there but the business is never open! I was told it's "open maybe 5% of the time we try to deliver mail" and that the post office "has a whole bin of packages for them" but that "nobody is ever at the location." After hearing from the Postmaster I tried to call the location using the number posted on their website - only to have it ring out to "Sorry. The mailbox is full and there is not enough space to leave a message. Thank you for using the voice messaging server. Goodbye." I've been forced to open a case with eBay to try and get my refund since the business address is never open to receive their mail.

The guy offered a free diagnostic, then charged $80 to wipe my hard drive and reinstall windows. He was upfront saying that it may not fix the issues. I only have myself to blame I guess. He's an amateur PC repair guy. Wiping a hard drive is NOT standard procedure or the first thing they should do. I don't understand all the 5 star reviews now that I've been there. Don't be fooled. Google 'computer repair in Chattanooga' and go with the place that has 94+ 5 star reviews. He might be far to drive but he is the best and only charged me $50 to diagnose and repair my computer - and he ACTUALLY repaired it. EDIT: In response to Aspire's reply. I only have myself to blame. As I said, you are correct that you were upfront with me with what you would do and that it may not fix it. And yes, you were fair and nice to offer to install a new hard drive no charging for the service. Let me explain (1) "not cheapest around" - I just got my computer FULLY fixed (new hard drive installed, new fan installed, stress test program run on PC to test, new Windows installed) for $75. This local PC repair did more work than you for less money. (2) "not professional, and not the best" - While you were respectful and polite, the clutter of your store does not inspire confidence, I had to come back to get small parts from my PC you left out or replaced with sub-par parts. I just did business with a PC repairman that kept me fully updated with pics, advice, and more to ensure I could trust him and understand what he was doing before I paid him. I got more necessary work done on my PC, by someone who went above and beyond to figure out what was wrong (not just wipe the hardrive...which it didn't need), for LESS money.
